The Other Side is the second studio album by Australian rock band Tonight Alive.
On 12 March 2013 the group released as a music video for "Breakdown", a track that features Benji Madden of Good Charlotte. [6] In March and April 2013, the group supported The Story So Far and Man Overboard on their co-headlining US tour, dubbed The Suppy Nation Tour. [7] Sessions were held at Sapphire Beach Acreage in Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, Australia, with producer and engineer Dave Petrovic. Dan Korneff mixed the recordings at Sonic Debris Recording Studio in New York City, United States; Brad Blackwood mastered the album at Euphonic Masters. [8]
Vocalist Jenna McDougall spoke to Alternative Press about the record:
"There are definitely some sad songs on the album, and I think there are a few heartbreakers, but there are also songs like 'The Fire' that's a super-liberating, empowering punk song. I'm so proud of that song because the lyrics are really passionate, affirmative and positive, but the music is really aggressive. [...]
"We are quite, not a bipolar band, but I think this album is really about finding our sound but at the same time also accepting that we don't have one particular sound. Not all our songs are going to be the same, and you can't put them under the same umbrella. Some of them are poppy, some of them are really heavy and some of them are somewhere in the middle. We found a balance on this record, and I'm proud of that because I think it's just being true as human beings. You can be at both ends of the scale." [9]
McDougall explained that there is "a lot more cohesive [because] I know my voice a lot better. I'm excited because the songs have got a very pop structure but [they've] still got a lot of edge." [10] The title track was originally three verses longer but the band edited the track down. [11] This original version was more country-orientated and was inspired by "Your Guardian Angel" by the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. It was edited down as the band expected the song to be released as a single and work "better as a radio song", according to McDougall. She found the decision "hard for me" as the song was personal to her. The chorus was completely rewritten a moment before McDougall was going to record her vocals for the song. It "tells the story of going from being friends to falling in love, and then the complications that followed before becoming just friends again." [12]
Following a BBC Radio 1 premier, a lyric video was released for "The Ocean" on 12 June. [13] On 20 July it was announced that The Other Side would be released in September. [14] On 31 July 2013, the band revealed the track listing on their Facebook page. "The Ocean" was released as the album's first single to digital outlets and YouTube preceding the album. "Lonely Girl" was later made as an instant download for those pre-ordering the album through iTunes. Preceded by a teaser trailer, [15] a music video was released for "Lonely Girl" on 15 August. [16] On 31 August "Hell and Back" was made available for streaming. [17] The Other Side was released through Sony Music Australia on 6 September [14] and made available for streaming the following day. [18] The album was released in Europe and the UK on 9 September and 10 September in the US through Fearless Records [18] as well as Japan on 11 September. Following this, the band embarked on a headlining Australian tour with support from Hands Like Houses and D at Sea. [14] They then went on a European tour with Set It Off and Decade. [19]
On 25 September a music video was released for "Come Home". [20] The band then supported You Me at Six on their US tour in October, [21] before embarking on their own headlining US tour, dubbed The Other Side Tour, until November. They were supported by The Downtown Fiction, For the Foxes and Echosmith. [22] The band then performed as part of Warped Tour Australia in November and December. [23] In early March 2014, the band released a music video for "The Ocean". [24] In March and April, the group supported Taking Back Sunday and the Used on their co-headlining US tour. [25] In August, the group appeared at the Reading and Leeds Festivals in the UK. [26] In September, the group went on a co-headlining Australian tour with You Me at Six. [27] They were supported by Call the Shots, With Confidence, Masketta Fall and Day Break. [28] In October and November, the band supported Mayday Parade in ontheir headlining US tour, titled the Honeymoon Tour. [29] Following this, the group went on a UK tour. During one of the shows, the band performed The Other Side in its entirety. [30] In February and March 2015, the band performed at Soundwave festival in Australia. [31]

The Other Side debuted at No. 5 on the Australian ARIA albums chart, No. 43 on the US Billboard 200 and No. 59 in the UK. [35] It received positive reviews from critics, with praise for the album's direction and musicianship.
The Other Side received very positive reviews upon its release. Rob Foster of Kill Your Stereo reviewed the album positively: "The Other Side isn't just a step in the right direction. No, it's miles further than that. This is certainly the most accomplished thing Tonight Alive have released in their career yet, and frankly, given the quality of their previous releases, that says a lot. Tonight Alive are an excellent representation of Australian music in the international market, and 'The Other Side' backs that up magnificently." [36] The Other Side was nominated for Best Album at the Kerrang! Awards. [37]

The Used is an American rock band from Orem, Utah, formed in 2000. The group consists of vocalist Bert McCracken, bassist Jeph Howard, drummer Dan Whitesides, and guitarist Joey Bradford. Former members include Quinn Allman, Branden Steineckert, and Justin Shekoski.
All Time Low is an American rock band from Towson, Maryland, formed in 2003. Consisting of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Alex Gaskarth, lead guitarist Jack Barakat, bassist/backing vocalist Zack Merrick, and drummer Rian Dawson, the band took its name from lyrics in the song "Head on Collision" by New Found Glory. The band has consistently done year-long tours, headlined numerous tours, and has appeared at music festivals including Warped Tour, Reading and Leeds, and Soundwave.
Mayday Parade is an American rock band from Tallahassee, Florida. Formed in 2005, the band was a result of a merger between two local Tallahassee bands, Kid Named Chicago and Defining Moment. Their debut EP Tales Told by Dead Friends, was released in 2006, and sold over 50,000 copies without any label support. In July 2007, Mayday Parade released their debut album A Lesson in Romantics. Having been signed to Fearless Records since 2006, the band also signed onto a major label with Atlantic Records in 2009. Their second studio album, Anywhere but Here was released in October 2009 and their third album, entitled Mayday Parade, was released in October 2011. Mayday Parade's fourth album, titled Monsters in the Closet, was released in October 2013. Their fifth album, titled Black Lines, was released October 2015. In April 2018, the band signed to Rise Records and released their sixth studio album Sunnyland on June 15, 2018. Their seventh studio album, What It Means to Fall Apart, was released on November 19, 2021.
Pierce the Veil is an American rock band formed in San Diego, California, in 2006. Founded by brothers Vic and Mike Fuentes after the disbanding of Before Today, which formed out of the San Diego punk scene, Jaime Preciado and Tony Perry joined the group in 2007, on bass and lead guitar respectively.
The Word Alive is an American metalcore band formed in Phoenix, Arizona, in 2008. The band was signed to Fearless Records since their formation. In 2022, they changed their label and signed to Thriller Records. The band currently consists of vocalist Tyler Smith, guitarist Jose DelRio, and drummer Daniel Nelson. The group has had several line-up changes throughout their career, with no founding members remaining. Their second EP, Empire reached No. 15 on the Top Heatseekers, meeting a great amount of positive acclaim upon its release in 2009. The following year, the group recorded and released their debut studio album, Deceiver on August 31, 2010, which reached No. 97 on the Billboard 200 and 15 on Independent Albums.

What Are You So Scared Of? is the debut studio album by Australian rock band Tonight Alive, released on 14 October 2011 through Sony Music Australia. The standard CD version of What Are You So Scared Of? contains 10 pre-gap hidden acoustic takes of the album. Let It Land EP was released to accompany it; it shares the track "Let It Land", and also contains a new song and the three acoustic versions which were unable to fit on the album. Tonight Alive traveled to Los Angeles to record the album with producer Mark Trombino. As the follow-up to 2010's Consider This EP, What Are You So Scared Of? debuted on the Australian albums chart at No. 15.

Beartooth is an American rock band founded by vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Caleb Shomo in Columbus, Ohio, in 2012. Originally Shomo performed every instrument when in the studio, before being joined by a four-piece band. Beartooth has been signed to Red Bull Records since 2013; its debut EP Sick was released on July 26, 2013, followed by the debut full-length album Disgusting on June 10, 2014. Since then, Shomo has released a further three studio albums under the Beartooth moniker: Aggressive (2016), Disease (2018), and Below (2021). Cavalier Youth is the fourth studio album by English rock band You Me at Six, released on 27 January 2014 through BMG. A few months after the release of their third studio album Sinners Never Sleep, the band had started writing new material in early 2012. By the end of that year, they left their label Virgin Records and management; pre-production and further writing followed into early 2013. Neal Avron was enlisted to produce the band's next album, which was recorded in July and August 2013 at NRG Studio and Avron's home studio La Casita, both in Los Angeles, California. Cavalier Youth is an alternative rock and pop rock album, which saw input from the rest of the band members on the lyrics.

"The Edge" is a song by Australian rock band Tonight Alive released on the soundtrack for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. It was released as a single on April 1, 2014. It was featured during the end credits for the international release of the film. It was released through Sony Music Entertainment. The song has been well received by critics and was accompanied with a music video with footage from the film incorporated to the band performing.
Madness is the fourth studio album by American rock band Sleeping with Sirens. The album was released on March 17, 2015 through Epitaph Records. The album was self-produced by the band and John Feldmann. The album is the band's first release following their departure from Rise Records in 2014. It is their first album record to feature guitarist Nick Martin of D.R.U.G.S. and Underminded who replace former guitarist Jesse Lawson. Madness was preceded by lead single "Kick Me" as well as a string of digital singles. The album continues the band's progression to a more pop rock–style sound, but retains some post-hardcore influences on tracks.
