The Postmarks are an indie pop band originally from Pompano Beach, Florida formed in 2004. [1] They released three albums and an EP between 2006 and 2009.

History

The band formed in 2004 with an initial lineup of Tel Aviv-born Tim Yehezkely (born May 20, 1982, in Tel Aviv-Yafo, Israel) (vocals), who left her Chemistry course at Florida Atlantic University to join the band, along with multi-instrumentalists Christopher Moll and J. Phillip Wilkins, who had both previously played in See Venus. [2] [3] [4] Their self-titled album was released in February 2007 and has been met with critical acclaim from Rolling Stone and Spin, [2] as well as Pitchfork Media, [5] and a host of other publications. [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] The group was discovered by Andy Chase of Ivy and subsequently released on his Unfiltered Records label. [11] [12] Before the release of the album, an EP of remixes was released on iTunes featuring remixes by James Iha, Brookville, Roger O'Donnell, Tahiti 80 and more.

In Spring 2007, the band toured North America with Smoosh and Memphis. [13] The lineup expanded to include Jeff Wagner on keyboards and Brian Hill on bass guitar. A brief summer tour took place to coincide with the band's appearance at the Lollapalooza festival. The group is featured in the "Love" episode of the Nick Jr. show, Yo Gabba Gabba! .

By the Numbers is a series of cover songs released every month of 2008 with each track containing a number in the title. [14] [15] The initial release of the series was exclusive to Emusic in the form of free downloads. [16] [17] The mp3s have since been removed, and the complete collection was released in November 2008. [14] [18] The album met with positive reviews, receiving a 7.4 rating from Pitchfork Media, and the Orlando Weekly saying "the album charms with a sense of whimsy". [19] PopMatters called it "a LP's worth of surprisingly coherent recontextualisations...a luxuriating delight". [20] American Songwriter called it "Moody and Cool". [21]

The band's second album of original material titled Memoirs at the End of the World was released in 2009. [22] [23] The album received a 7.6 rating from Pitchfork Media, with Matthew Solarski calling it "a thing of pristine orchestrated pop beauty". [23] Following the release of the album, the most extensive touring to date took place, including the band's first visit to Europe and a US tour with Stellastarr and Peter Bjorn and John. [24]

The group went on hiatus in 2010. Tim Yehezkely has another project called Tim & Adam with Adam from shoegaze giant Whirlaway; They released a self-titled album in 2013. [25] Christopher Moll has moved onto a self produced project with a retro-soul sound called The Lovers Key, along with singer Maco Monthervil. [26] J. Phillip Wilkins continues with his personal music projects Our Man In Pompano, Grand Theft Otto, and film scores. Jeff Wagner has been active in the Miami Noise music scene since 2011, appearing with The Dot Dot Dot Orchestra and performing solo as Colour With Sound.

In 2024, The Postmarks began releasing new music, including a re-imagining of their 2007 Valentine's Day song "My Little Heart". For Halloween, they released the '60s-style dub track "Whispers In The Dark". In December, the band released the Winter track "The Glow Of The Snow" to address SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder).

A full-length album of new music is expected sometime in 2025.

Musical style

The band's music has been described as indie pop or chamber pop. [8] [27] Paul Lester, writing in The Guardian , described them as "a cutie version of Cowboy Junkies/Mazzy Star's narcotic alt.country, Slowdive minus the feedback or Stereolab without the electronic effects". [12]

Hush is the third studio album by American shoegaze band Asobi Seksu. It was released on February 17, 2009 by Polyvinyl Record Co., marking the band's first album for the label. Hush was recorded in the summer of 2008 and was produced by Chris Zane, who had also worked on Asobi Seksu's previous album Citrus (2006). The album demonstrated a shift from the more shoegaze-inspired work of prior releases to a mellower, quieter sound.

My hard drive with all my music was stolen in my car one fine afternoon in Stockholm, the very same fine afternoon we came home from our US tour, the very same day I was feeling thrilled to come home and start the process of finishing our new album. Of course I had made a backup copy on my computer at home. But for some reason a power failure in the building made that hard drive collapse too. Unbelievable. I was speechless for days." The band played the Primavera Sound Festival in Spain in May 2008, and reconvened in the studio to start the recording process again in September.

J. Phillip Wilkins is an American record producer, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, composer and screenwriter. He is originally from Miami, Florida, currently residing in Los Angeles, California, and is a member of the band The Postmarks, which is currently on an indefinite hiatus. He has released two albums with The Postmarks, along with a covers album and an EP.

The Fresh & Onlys are an American rock band. They were formed in San Francisco, California, United States, in 2008 by Tim Cohen of Black Fiction, bassist Shayde Sartin and guitarist Wymond Miles. A year later they recruited drummer Kyle Gibson. They are a key band in what has been described as San Francisco's "new garage rock" movement, but their sound is equally aligned with pastoral psychedelia, brooding new wave, western twang, and jangly literate 1980s guitar pop.

Tacocat is an American punk rock band from Seattle, founded in 2007 and consisting of Emily Nokes, Bree McKenna, Lelah Maupin, and Eric Randall. They gained popularity in 2014 following the release of their second album NVM, engineered by Conrad Uno. The album received positive reviews in the music press, including from Pitchfork, AllMusic, and PopMatters, and also reached the CMJ top 10 college radio albums.

Candy Claws is an American dream pop group formed in Fort Collins, Colorado in 2007. It consists of founding members Ryan Hover, Karen Hover and Hank Bertholf. They disbanded in 2015, soon after the release of Ceres & Calypso in the Deep Time, which over time has proved to be their most popular and lasting work. They reunited in 2023 and released their first new music in a decade called "Distortion Spear". Although released as part of the 10-year anniversary of Ceres & Calypso in the Deep Time, it is a new recording by the band.
