The Predators (typeset as THE PREDATORS) is a Japanese rock supergroup formed in 2005 by vocalist and guitarist Sawao Yamanaka (The Pillows), bassist Yoshihito "Jiro" Wayama (Glay), and drummer Shinpei Nakayama (Straightener). In 2010, Nakayama left and was replaced by Hirotaka Takahashi (Ellegarden). Originally on their own record label Three Mountain, name chosen because all three original members have the word "yama" (mountain) in their last name, they were then on Avex Trax from 2008 until 2015, when they switched to Yamanaka's own Delicious Label. The Predators have sporadic periods of activity due to its members' commitments to their main bands.

History

Glay bassist Jiro became a fan of The Pillows during the Runners High tour in 1999 and became friends with their vocalist and guitarist Sawao Yamanaka. In 2001, the two Hokkaido natives did a cover session of Nirvana together. In 2004, Jiro participated in the recording of The Pillows' 15th anniversary tribute album Synchronized Rockers , where he met Straightener drummer Shinpei Nakayama, saw his drumming style and thought he was talented. And so when the chance came, Jiro and Sawao asked Shinpei if he wanted to form a band together. The formation of The Predators was officially announced in May 2005. [1] Their debut mini-album Hunting!!! was released on July 6, and reached number 12 on the Oricon Albums Chart. The trio had their first concert at FM802 Meet the World Beat 2005 on July 24. [2] After participating in more festivals, the band went on sabbatical as the members continued their main bands' activities. [3]

In 2007, the Predators returned with a performance at Sound Shooter Vol. 2 on March 9. On October 15, 2008, they released their second mini-album Kiba wo Misero, which debuted at number 6 on the Oricon chart. [3] They held the six-date Shoot the Moon tour in October and November to support the record. [3] In March 2010, the band announced the amicable departure of Shinpei so he could focus on Straightener. Shinpei had asked to leave the group during the 2008 Shoot the Moon Tour, explaining that although he wanted to continue both bands, the stress was outweighing the joy. [4] He was replaced by Ellegarden drummer Hirotaka Takahashi, whom Yamanaka asked to join after working together on his solo album. [4] The first concert with the new lineup took place at Arabaki Rock Fest. on May 1, 2010. [5] On August 4, the band released its third mini-album This World, which peaked at number 12 on the Oricon chart. It was supported by a four-date tour in September. [5]

After another break, The Predators released the mini-album Monster in My Head on August 1, 2012, and supported it with a nationwide tour from September to October. [6] Their fifth album Rock'N'Roll Pandemic followed three years later on August 26, 2015, and was also supported by a nationwide tour from September to October. [7] The trio resumed activities in January 2018 with the release of "Arabian Dance", a single featuring four studio songs and five live tracks that was sold only through mail-order and at venues on its accompanying tour. [8] Three and a half years later, the album Go Back to Yesterday! was released only through mail-order on November 17, 2021. [9]

Luna Sea is a Japanese rock band formed in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1986. Due to the use of makeup and costumes early in their career and their widespread popularity, they are considered one of the most successful and influential bands in the visual kei movement. Throughout the mid-1990s they used significantly less makeup, and after a one-year break in 1997, came back with a more mainstream alternative rock style and toned down their on-stage attire. They disbanded in 2000. In 2003, HMV Japan ranked Luna Sea at number 90 on their list of the 100 most important Japanese pop acts.

Siam Shade was a five-piece Japanese rock band, formed in Tokyo in 1991. The classic line-up of Hideki on vocals, Natchin on bass, Kazuma and Daita on guitar, and Jun-ji on drums broke onto the visual kei scene alongside a multitude of other artists in the early 1990s and enjoyed a decade of relative popularity before disbanding in early 2002. The members have reunited several times since 2007 for one-off concerts and short tours. Outside Japan, Siam Shade is best known for "1/3 no Junjō na Kanjō", which was the sixth ending theme of the Rurouni Kenshin anime. Daita's work on their song "Triptych" was named the 83rd best guitar instrumental by Young Guitar Magazine in 2019.

Wands (ワンズ) is a Japanese rock band formed in 1991 and active until 2000 under the label B-Gram Records. In 2019, the band reunited with a new vocalist, Daishi Uehara, and two former members, Shibasaki and Kimura, under the D-Go recording label. In the span of 29 years, the band has had three lead vocalists and changed instrumental members five times.

Mucc is a Japanese visual kei rock band, formed in Ibaraki Prefecture in 1997. The classic line up of Tatsuro on vocals, Miya on guitar, Yukke on bass, and Satochi on drums was solidified in 1999 following the departure of original bassist Hiro. After 24 years, Satochi retired from the music industry in October 2021, leaving Mucc a trio. They have released 16 studio albums, with 2020's Aku being their highest-charting. Although predominately a heavy band both lyrically and musically, Mucc is known for switching between music genres and styles frequently. Kerrang! included their fourth studio album Kuchiki no Tō (2004) on a list of 13 essential Japanese rock and metal albums.

Ellegarden is a Japanese rock band formed in December 1998 in Chiba Prefecture. Its lineup consists of vocalist/guitarist Takeshi Hosomi, guitarist Shinichi Ubukata, bassist Yuichi Takada, and drummer Hirotaka Takahashi. After releasing five studio albums, including the Oricon number one Eleven Fire Crackers (2006), the band announced an indefinite hiatus in 2008. In May 2018, Ellegarden announced a reunion and held their first national tour in 10 years.

Straightener is a Japanese alternative rock band. The band started out as a duo with Atsushi Horie (vocals/guitar) and Shinpei Nakayama (drums) in 1998. They established an independent label named Ghost Records in 2002. Hidekazu Hinata joined the band as bassist in 2003, giving the band a heavier sound. In October of the same year they released a single, "Traveling Gargoyle" from Toshiba EMI.

Tourbillon are a Japanese rock trio formed in 2005 by Luna Sea members Ryuichi Kawamura (vocals) and Inoran (guitar), and D-Loop member Hiroaki "H. Hayama" Hayama (keyboards). They reached number three on the Oricon Singles Chart with "Break the Chain", the opening theme of the TV series Kamen Rider Kiva. The group ended activities in 2008 shortly after its release. Tourbillon reunited in 2015, and again in 2023.

Tricot is a Japanese rock band from Kyoto. The band was formed in 2010 by vocalist and guitarist Ikumi "Ikkyu" Nakajima, guitarist Motoko "Motifour" Kida, and bassist Hiromi "Hirohiro" Sagane. Known for their intricate rhythms and visual identity, they have released seven studio albums. Their musical style has been described by Rolling Stone as "adrenalized math rock sped up and given pop's candy coating".

ZOC, formerly known as Metamuse, is a Japanese alternative idol girl group that formed in September 2018. They released their debut single, "Family Name", on April 30, 2019. On July 7, 2022, the group changed its name to Metamuse, before reverting back to ZOC on November 11, 2023.
