The Rookery or Rookery is a village [1] in the Borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire, England. [2] The village forms an urban area with the town of Kidsgrove and its suburbs which include Dove Bank and Whitehill. As well as the neighbouring villages of Harriseahead, Newchapel, Mow Cop and Packmoor. [3]
The village lies midway between the towns of Kidsgrove and Biddulph. As well as the county boundaries of Cheshire and Staffordshire. [4]
The village grew with the coal mines and collieries in the region. It is linked with both the nearby Whitehill area of Kidsgrove due to both the former Whitehill Methodist Church. [5] and White Hill Farm. [6]
The village also had its own tin church dedicated to St Saviour. It was located on Church Street and was constructed to replace the former 1879 St Saviour's church in the nearby village of Butt Lane. [7]
The church instead remained in situ and became a new place of worship for the nearby villages until its eventual closure in 1972. [8] It remained in situ for the next few decades until 2016, when it was demolished and replaced by housing. [9]
The village is home to the "Robin Hood" pub and a Bargain Booze shop.
There are regular bus services between Stoke-on-Trent, Alsager, Audley, Congleton, Kidsgrove and Biddulph that pass serve the village. [10]
The nearest rail station is in Kidsgrove.
