The Son of a Kapenta (abbreviated as SOAK) is the second studio album by Nigerian singer Brymo. It was released by Chocolate City on November 15, 2012. [1] Recorded in English and Yoruba, The Son of a Kapenta is primarily a mixture of Afropop, fuji, contemporary pop, soul, techno, EDM and R&B. [2] The album features guest appearances from Jesse Jagz, Pryse, M.I, Ice Prince and Efya. It was produced by E Kelly, Mikky Me Joses, Legendury Beatz, Jesse Jagz, Blaze, DMM Oluremi and Kid Konnect. The album was supported by the singles "Ara", "Good Morning" and "Go Hard". The Son of a Kapenta received positive reviews from music critics, who commended its production and Brymo's voice.

Background and promotion

Brymo started recording The Son of a Kapenta after signing a record deal with Chocolate City in 2010. [2] His father's carpentry profession inspired the album's title. Prior to releasing his label debut "Ara", Brymo worked with label mates M.I, Jesse Jagz and Ice Prince to record "Action Film", "Love You" and "Oleku", respectively. [2] The Son of a Kapenta is primarily a mixture of Afropop, fuji, contemporary pop, techno, soul, EDM and R&B. [1] [3]

In a 2012 interview with The Punch , Brymo described the album as a summary of his life and said each song is a reflection of his energy. [4] He also said he recorded the album to be identified by his body of work as a lead artist rather than as a featured artist. [4] The Son of a Kapenta features collaborations with Jesse Jagz, Pryse, M.I, Ice Prince and Efya. [5] It was produced by E Kelly, Mikky Me Joses, Legendury Beatz, Jesse Jagz, Blaze, DMM Oluremi and Kid Konnect. [5] The album suffered a botched roll out and wasn't given the full big label push. [2] As a result of this, it was included on The Nation 's list of the "Albums that failed commercially in 2012". [6]

On September 18, 2011, Brymo released the album's lead single "Ara", which was produced by the record producing duo Legendury Beatz. [7] "Ara" loosely translates to Wonder and was written six months after he recorded "Good Morning". [8] [9] Brymo recorded the song while being under pressure from Chocolate City to submit a single. [8] The accompanying music video for "Ara" was directed by the production company Aje Filmworks. [10] The video was primarily shown in monochrome with occasional bursts of color. [2] Brymo won Best Recording of the Year and was nominated for Best Vocal Performance (Male) for "Ara" at The Headies 2012. [11] [12]

On April 16, 2012, Brymo released "Good Morning" as the album's second single. [13] Its music video was also directed by Aje Filmworks and released on 30 July 2012. [14] "Good Morning" was nominated for Best Recording of the Year at The Headies 2013. [15] The album's third single, "Go Hard", was released on September 26, 2012. [16] Written by Brymo and produced by Jesse Jagz, the song has elements of Azonto and was described as an "energetic dance song". [16] On March 28, 2013, Brymo released a documentary-style video for "Omoge Campus", which was filmed in Ibadan. [17] The video depicts the story of a NYSC member who is reminiscent about his significant other. [17]

Composition

Conceptually, The Son of a Kapenta is composed of three chapters: Birth, Dealer and Lover. [3] The songs "1986", "Life is too Short", "Ara" and "Now Now" all fall within the Birth category, while "Go Hard", "Omoge Campus", "Rendezvous" and "Akara" fall under Dealer. [3] The album's remaining tracks fit into the Lover category. [3] On the album's opener "1986", Brymo is reminiscent about the sacrifices his mother made for him and the pain she went through giving birth to him. [5] [18] The Mikky Me Joses-produced track "Life is too Short" is a fusion of pop and EDM. [3] The infectious track "Ara" fuses Afrobeat and techno. [3]

In the Jesse Jagz-assisted track "Now Now", Brymo wants his blessings to occur quickly. [3] The hip-hop-influenced track "Go Hard" is reminiscent of Timbaland & Magoo's "Drop". [3] In the highlife-inspired track "Omoge Campus", Brymo sings about the love he has for a girl on campus. [5] In "If You Were Mine", he ponders if his love interest will catch him when he falls. [5] The dance track "Your Love" has an electro-pop feel. [3] "See Me" has elements of rock music. [3] The DMM Oluremi-produced track "We All Need Something" discusses what it takes to be human. [3]

The Son of a Kapenta received positive reviews from music critics. In a review for Jaguda, Ayo Jaguda rated the album 9.5 out of 10, praising its production and commending everyone who worked on it. [18] Jaguda also said the album was "well packaged" and felt like Brymo's "freshman album". [18] Reviewing for Nigerian Entertainment Today , Ayomide Tayo granted the album 4 stars out of 5, commending Brymo for "composing songs that are well thought out and layered". [5] Tayo also acknowledged Brymo for knocking together "different sounds, choruses, verses and ideas to create an album worthy of his status". [5]

A writer for 360nobs, who goes by the moniker Shadenonconformist, praised the album's production and Brymo's voice. [3] Shadenonconformist said the record "shows a lot of growth and maturity both in Brymo's sound and willingness to dabble in other music genres", but criticized it for sounding "repetitive at certain intervals". [3] Ogaga Sakpaide of TooXclusive did a track-by-track review of the album and gave it 3.5 stars out of 5. [19]

He voluntarily exited the Chocolate City deal in 2013 and announced the launch of his independent label, Jagz Nation. Jagz released his second studio album Jagz Nation, Vol. 1: Thy Nation Come in 2013; it included singles such as "Redemption", "Bad Girl", "Sex & Scotch" and "God on the Mic". His third studio album, Jagz Nation, Vol. 2: Royal Niger Company, was released in 2014. It was also one of the most popular Nigerian songs of 2010, along with Naeto C's "Ten Over Ten" and D'banj's "Scapegoat". It was made available for purchase as a digital download on October 20, 2013, and released six days after Chocolate City filed an interim injunction against Brymo. Mikky Me Joses produced the entire record, with guitar work done by a guitarist named David. M, D & S was supported by the singles "Down" and "Eko". Physical copies of the album were not allowed to circulate as a result of the injunction. The album's physical release was issued on March 26, 2014, a few days after the injunction was lifted.

Yellow is the seventh studio album by Nigerian singer Brymo, independently released on 1 April 2020. The album explores hedonistic viewpoints and is a departure from the dark themes of his sixth studio album Oṣó. Brymo described Yellow as an album about "love and survival", and said it is an alternative pop and electronic record. The album is a mixture of sentimental ballad, trap, sophisti-pop, shoegaze, rock, synth-pop and folk. Nigerian singer Lindsey Abudei is the only artist to be featured on the album. Yellow was initially intended to have 17 songs but due to technical issues, two songs were omitted from the project. The album was supported by the single "Strippers + White Lines", and was nominated for Best Alternative Album and Album of the Year at The Headies 2020.

Oga Boss is the second studio album by Nigerian rapper Illbliss. It was released on 24 September 2012, by Capital Hill Music.
