The Voice South Africa is a South African reality singing competition and local version of The Voice first broadcast as The Voice of Holland . Its first season started on 31 January 2016 and proved to be a hit on M-Net. The second season started on 5 February 2017 on the same channel. The third season premiered on 3 February 2019.

Contents

The original coaching panel of the show consists of Kahn Morbee, Lira, Bobby van Jaarsveld, and Karen Zoid. Lungile Radu and Stacy Norman were the original hosts. Season 3 saw a change in the coaching panel, replacing previous coaches and hosts. Lira is the only remaining coach being joined by Afrikaans singer Riana Nel, rapper Riky Rick and rocker Francois Van Coke. Anele Mdoda is the current host.

Coaches and hosts

Shortly after the announcement of the production of The Voice South Africa, the panellists were revealed with Kahn Morbee, Lira, Bobby van Jaarsveld, and Karen Zoid as coaches; and Lungile Radu and Stacy Norman as hosts. [1] The coaching panel and hosts remain unchanged for season 2, which aired in 2017.

On 29 August 2018, M-Net renewed The Voice South Africa for a third season. [2] On 2 November 2018, Anele Mdoda confirmed to become the new host for season 3. [3] Four days later, it was announced that Riky Rick would become a new coach for the third season, [4] followed by Riana Nel on 7 November [5] and Francois Van Coke on 9 November. [6] On 8 November 2018 Lira confirmed to be returning to the show for her third season as coach. [7]

Season synopses

Season 1 (2016)

The first season of The Voice South Africa began airing on 31 January 2016 on M-Net. The season was hosted by Lungile Radu with Stacy Norman as the V-Reporter, and are joined by coaches Kahn Morbee, Lira, Bobby van Jaarsveld, and Karen Zoid. Richard Stirton won the first season on 22 May 2016. [11]

Season 2 (2017)

The second season of The Voice South Africa began airing on 5 February 2017 on M-Net. The coaches and hosts remained the same as last season. Eight live shows were conducted this season, with five contestants advanced to the Grand Finale. For the sake of fairness and transparency, M-Net nullified the votes after the Semifinal. As M-Net could not determine with certainty whether misconduct took place regarding paid-for marketing in the previous two weeks, two contestants eliminated in week 4 and 5 were brought back to the show, bringing a total of 7 finalists. Craig Lucas won the season beating fan favorite Josh Ansley. [12] [13]

Season 3 (2019)

The third season of The Voice South Africa began airing on 3 February 2019 on M-Net, with returning coach Lira and new coaches Riky Rick†, Riana Nel, Francois Van Coke as well as new host Anele Mdoda. Five artists advanced to the Grand Finale, with fan favorite Tasché Burger from team Francois crowned the winner. Sone Joubert and Siki Jo-An Qwazi, both from team Riana, finished in second and third place, respectively, while The PJ Twins and Eon Claude le Roux rounded up the top 5. [14]

Her work in both English and Afrikaans has gathered critical acclaim, and she has been dubbed South Africa's "Queen of Rock" by several major local publications. Her followers and, more generally, the South African youth have also been referred to as the "Zoid Generation" by the press. Zoid's current band members are Henry Steel Jnr (guitar), Schalk van der Merwe and Jonno Sweetman (drums). The singer is also known for hosting the kykNet television series Republiek van Zoid Afrika and was one of the judges on The Voice SA as well.

The Parlotones are a renowned South African indie rock band hailing from Johannesburg, formed in 1998. The ensemble features Kahn Morbee on vocals and rhythm guitar, Paul Hodgson as lead guitarist, Glen Hodgson handling bass guitar, keyboards, and backing vocals, and Neil Pauw on drums and percussion. Originally rooted in Britpop, The Parlotones' music has evolved to encompass a diverse range of genres, with lyrics centered on relatable themes such as love and everyday life, complemented by engaging and memorable melodies.

Tuks FM is the radio station of the University of Pretoria and one of South Africa's community broadcasters. It was one of the first community broadcasters in South Africa to be given an FM licence. Previously renowned for its alternative rock music offering, the station underwent a musical transformation, where its playlist was changed to reflect the student population. Tuks FM is a volunteer, campus station, meaning that it is completely operated by students, save for upper management.

Big Brother South Africa, formerly known as Big Brother Mzansi, is a television series in South Africa produced by M-Net and Endemol. As of 2023, it has had a total of six seasons. Big Brother South Africa had four seasons, and a celebrity season in between. The first season aired in 2001 and the second in 2002. Four seasons were directed by Leon Coetzer and hosted by Mark Pilgrim.

Riana Nel is a Namibian singer and songwriter. After growing up in Windhoek she moved to Pretoria, South Africa, to start her career.

Pieter van Jaarsveld, professionally known as Bobby van Jaarsveld, is a South African Afrikaans-language pop singer-songwriter and actor.

The 2014 Currie Cup Premier Division was the 76th season in the competition since it started in 1889 and was contested from 9 August to 25 October 2014. The tournament is the top tier of South Africa's premier domestic rugby union competition.

The 2015 SARU Community Cup will be the third season of the SARU Community Cup competition. The qualification to the tournament will take place in 2014, while the competition proper will be contested in 2015. The tournament is the top competition for non-university rugby union clubs in South Africa.

Francois Badenhorst, better known by his stage name Francois Van Coke, is a South African singer-songwriter, rose to fame as the front man of South African rock bands Fokofpolisiekar and Van Coke Kartel. On the 8 April 2015, Francois launched his self-titled debut solo album and kicked his solo career into gear with the release of – Toe Vind Ek Jou featuring Karen Zoid. It was the first Afrikaans album and single to simultaneously jump to number one positions on the South African iTunes Store. The song was downloaded more than 20,000 times on iTunes, achieving Platinum status as a single. The music video for "Toe Vind Ek Jou" was viewed over a million times within six-month and was announced as the biggest Afrikaans music video of 2015. His second album, Hierdie is die Lewe followed in 2017 and in 2018 he released a collab-EP, Francois van Coke en Vriende featuring collaborations with Die Heuwels Fantasties, Early B, Laudo Liebenberg and Jack Parow. The first season of his TV show, Die Van Coke Show, aired in 2018. His third solo album, Dagdrome in Suburbia, released in October 2019. He has a daughter named Alex, age 6–7 and an infant boy.

Miss South Africa 2018 was the 60th edition of Miss South Africa pageant, held at the Sun Arena at Time Square in Pretoria, on May 27, 2018.

The 24th Annual South African Music Awards was held at Sun City, in the North West on 2 June 2018. The list of nominees was announced on 19 April 2018 at Birchwood Hotel in Ekurhuleni. Mafikizolo, Mi Casa and Shekhinah each received a node of nomination Other artists with multiple nominations include Mobi Dixon, Distruction Boyz and Riky Rick. It was aired live on SABC 1 at 20:00 SAST (CAT). The show was hosted by Somizi Mhlongo, Dineo Ranaka and Mpho Popps.

The 2019 Men's Premier Hockey League was the 4th edition of the Premier Hockey League, the annual tournament men's field hockey championship of South Africa.

Anele Mdoda is a South African television presenter, radio personality, producer, businesswoman and author. Born and raised in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, Mdoda obtained a degree in Politics and International Relations at the University of Pretoria. Her career then began at the age of 20 in 2004 as a radio DJ.
