Thee Sacred Souls is the debut studio album by San Diego soul trio Thee Sacred Souls, released on August 26, 2022, through Daptone Records.
Thee Sacred Souls formed in April 2019, composed of bassist Sal Samano, drummer Alex Garcia, and singer Josh Lane. [1] [4] [5] Garcia and Samano met in San Diego in 2018, forming an instrumental oldies band. [6] [7] They met Lane a few months later, and he joined as a vocalist for the group. [6] [8] The group was inspired by chicano soul, gospel, doo-wop, and oldies music. [9] [10] [11] [12] [13] The group started exclusively as a live band performing at local venues in San Diego at first. [6] [14] After their second show, Bosco Mann invited them to record music at Daptone Records' Penrose Studios in Riverside, California. [7]
The album's debut single, "Can I Call You Rose?" was the first song created by the trio. [1] [15] [16] Work on their debut self-titled album began in 2019 and finished in 2022. [1]
On March 18, 2020, the group released their first single, "Can I Call You Rose?" [17] On June 15, 2022, the group announced that their debut self-titled album would be releasing on August 27, 2022, alongside a music video for "Easier Said Than Done". [18]
On November 30, 2022, the group performed "Easier Said Than Done" on Jimmy Kimmel Live! [15] [8] The group opened for St. Paul and The Broken Bones' The Alien Coast Tour in 2022. [19] [20] The group headlined a tour in support of the album in 2022 and 2023. [1] [21] [22] The group also opened for Portugal. The Man and Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats throughout 2023. According to the review aggregator Metacritic , Thee Sacred Souls received "universal acclaim" based on a weighted average score of 84 out of 100 from 4 critic scores.
Mark Bentley's review for Uncut described the album as "barrel-aged deep soul, laced with Latin, lyrically inventive, and peculiarly fresh." Robin Murray of Clash wrote that the album's "down tempo sweet soul feels transported from the heavens, a soothing, harmony-laden blast of soulful magic." Writing for Mojo , Lois Wilson stated that the album's songs "are broad in scope and full of individual flourishes". Rocio Contreras of KCRW described the album as "a sonic love letter draped in beautiful harmonies, pulling from sacred memories to create something fresh, new, and full of flavor" [26] Phil Thetremoloking of God Is in the TV wrote that the album was a "perfect re-creation of classic doo-wop soul" but that it lacked adventurousness.

Chicano rock, also called chicano fusion, is rock music performed by Mexican American (Chicano) groups or music with themes derived from Chicano culture. Chicano Rock, to a great extent, does not refer to any single style or approach. Some of these groups do not sing in Spanish at all, or use many specific Latin instruments or sounds. The subgenre is defined by the ethnicity of its performers, and as a result covers a wide range of approaches.

Daptone Records is a funk and soul independent record label based in Brooklyn, New York. Best known as the home of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings and Charles Bradley, the label boasts a roster which includes Menahan Street Band, The Budos Band, The Sugarman 3, and Antibalas, and runs the recording studio Daptone's House of Soul.
Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings were an American funk and soul band signed to Daptone Records. They were part of a revival movement of mid-1960s to mid-1970s style funk and soul music. They released their debut album Dap Dippin' in 2002, the first of seven studio albums. Their 2014 album Give the People What They Want was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. Following Sharon Jones' death in 2016, the band released the posthumous album Soul of a Woman in 2017 and a compilation of cover songs in 2020.
"I'd Rather Go Blind" is a blues song written by Ellington Jordan with co-writing credits to Billy Foster and Etta James. It was first recorded by Etta James in 1967, released the same year, and has subsequently become regarded as a blues and soul classic.

The Budos Band is an American instrumental band from Staten Island, New York, formed in 2005. AllMusic describes the group as a "doom rock Afro-soul big band with a '70s touch" that joins "musical universes from trippy psychedelia and Afro-funk to '70s hard rock and late-'60s soul." They have described themselves as "70's Psychedelic Instrumental Music," and "Afro-soul inspired by Ethiopian music with a soul undercurrent" and "sprinkled a little bit of sweet 60's stuff on top." One reviewer described the band as “sounding as if Quentin Tarantino was the music supervisor for a Bond film". Their more recent albums have incorporated sounds from 1970s jazz, funk, Afro-Beat, underground rock, and proto-metal. They have been signed to Daptone Records throughout their career.
Charles Edward Bradley was an American funk and soul singer. After years of obscurity and a part-time music career, Bradley came to prominence in his early 50s. His performances and recording style were consistent with the revivalist approach of his main label Daptone Records, celebrating the feel of funk and soul from the 1960s and 1970s. One review said he "echoes the evocative delivery of Otis Redding".
Chicano Batman is an American psychedelic rock band based in Los Angeles, California. Formed in 2008, the band is composed of Eduardo Arenas, Carlos Arévalo, and Bardo Martinez. Currently, the band's drummer, Gabriel Villa, has not been active in the group since their last studio album, Invisible People. The group's sound draws from a mix of genres ranging from psychedelic soul, funk, indie, prog, and rock.
Hinds is a Spanish indie rock band from Madrid, formed in 2011. The group currently performs as a duo consisting of Carlotta Cosials and Ana García Perrote. The original name of the band was Deers, but they changed it at the end of 2014 after a threat of legal action from the similarly named band The Dears. The group chose "Hinds", an English word of Germanic origin that means "does" or "female deers", as the new name of the band and officially implemented the name change on 7 January 2015.

Sisters 3 was an American indie folk group from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, formed in 2005 by siblings Annachristie, Beatrice, and Cassandra Sadler. The group released two albums, Star Spangled (2008) and Coruscate at the Meadow Gate (2011), and found local notoriety, collaborating with artists including Hoots & Hellmouth, Sharon Little, and American Babies, and performing at the Philadelphia Folk Festival and venues including the Mann Center and Madison Square Garden. Annachristie Sadler would later find more notoriety as a solo artist under the name AC Sapphire.
