Theunis Louis "Theuns" Botha is a retired South African politician of the Democratic Alliance. [1] Previously,he served as the Western Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and as the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Health. He also served as a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament from 2004 to 2015. He was Leader of the Opposition in the Provincial Parliament from 2004 to 2009 and Leader of the Democratic Alliance in the Western Cape from 2002 to 2012. Botha was also Deputy Provincial Leader of the party from 2012 to 2015.
Prior to entering provincial politics,Botha was elected as a councillor of the Riversdale Municipality in 1995. In 2000,he was elected Mayor of the Hessequa Local Municipality.
In 2001,Botha was elected Western Cape Provincial Chairperson of the Democratic Alliance. [2] He was designated to succeed Gerald Morkel as Provincial Leader of the Democratic Alliance,after Morkel had announced that he would resign the role. He was elected to a full term as Provincial Leader in March 2003,after he defeated Sydney Opperman,Tony da Silva and Pauline Cupido. [3] Botha was elected to the Western Cape Provincial Parliament in 2004 and took office as a Member on 26 April 2004. He was designated to the position of Leader of the Opposition of the legislature. [4] He was re-elected to a second term as Provincial Leader after he defeated Lennit Max with about 69 percent of the vote. [5]
In 2006 Botha formed a cabal of ex-New National Party stalwarts within the Democratic Alliance. Together with Dan Roodt,the far-right founder of the pro-Afrikaans Action Group (PRAAG),their new organisation,tentatively named the "Republican Party",would unite Afrikaans-speakers (both coloured and white) with Zulu-speakers led by Jacob Zuma,who had been fired as deputy president and was in the political wilderness. In September 2007,when cabal members Kent Morkel and Kobus Brynard walked out,Theuns Botha unexpectedly decided to stay in the DA as provincial leader. [6]
In 2009,the Democratic Alliance won a majority in the Provincial Parliament. Botha was appointed to the post of Western Cape Provincial Minister of Health. He was succeeded by Lynne Brown as Leader of the Opposition. [7] [8] He was re-elected to another term as Provincial Leader in 2010 after he had defeated Dan Plato and Lennit Max. [9] Botha announced his intention to stand down as Provincial Leader of the party in 2012 and opted to run for the post of Deputy Provincial Leader. He was succeeded by Ivan Meyer as Provincial Leader,and Botha was elected Deputy Provincial Leader. [10]
During a parliamentary debate in May 2013,Botha was accused of using the racist Afrikaans slur "bobbejaan" (baboon) in reference to African National Congress member Zodwa Magwaza. Botha denied his words but,after review of the Hansard record by the Speaker,he was forced to apologise. [11]
In December 2014,Premier Helen Zille announced that Botha and Nomafrench Mbombo would exchange ministerial positions. Botha would become Western Cape Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport,while Mbombo would take his position. The changes came into effect on 1 January 2015. [12] [13]
Botha was unseated as Deputy Provincial Leader by Bonginkosi Madikizela in April 2015. Madikizela won by a narrow margin. Botha subsequently announced his resignation from the Western Cape Government and Provincial Parliament and was succeeded by Anroux Marais as provincial minister. [14] [15]
Botha has since returned to the private sector and in 2017 he joined Medicoop co-operative bank as managing director. [16]
In 2018 Botha was back in the public eye when he used social media to heavily criticise the handling of the water shortage by the Democratic Alliance [17]
In June 2019 he was investigated for the alleged theft of 40,000 litres of water per day from his neighbour in Riversdale. [18]
The Democratic Alliance is a South African political party and the official opposition to the ruling African National Congress (ANC). The party is broadly centrist,and has been attributed both centre-left and centre-right policies. It is a member of Liberal International and the Africa Liberal Network. The DA traces its roots to the founding of the anti-apartheid Progressive Party in 1959,with many mergers and name changes between that time and the present. The DA ideologically shows a variety of liberal tendencies,including social liberalism,classical liberalism,and conservative liberalism.

From June 2011 to October 2018,he was the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Community Safety.
Albert Theo Fritz is a South African politician and advocate. He was the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Community Safety for two nonconconsecutive terms from 2010 to 2011 and again from 2019 until his dismissal from the position amid sexual misconduct allegations in 2022. He was a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament from 2010 until his resignation from the DA in 2022. He served as the interim Leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape from the suspension and resignation of Bonginkosi Madikizela in April 2021 until his resignation from the party in March 2022. He was also the deputy DA provincial leader 2017 to 2021. Fritz previously served as the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Social Development from 2011 to 2019. From 2009 to 2010,he was a Member of the National Assembly and the Shadow Deputy Minister of Correctional Services.

Marius Llewellyn Fransman is a retired South African politician and teacher. He served as Leader of the Opposition in the Western Cape Provincial Parliament from 2014 to 2016,and as Chairperson of the Western Cape African National Congress from 2011 to 2016. He served as Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation in the cabinet of Jacob Zuma. From 2009 to 2014,he was a Member of the National Assembly. Fransman served as a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament from 1999 to 2009,and again from 2014 to 2016.
Alan Richard Winde is a South African politician and businessman. He is the 8th and current Premier of the Western Cape,having held the position since 2019. He has been a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament since 1999. Winde is a member of the Democratic Alliance.
Beverley Ann Schäfer is a South African politician serving as the Deputy Speaker of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament since May 2019. She served as the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Economic Opportunities from November 2018 to May 2019. Between June 2014 and October 2018,she served as the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Economic Opportunities,Tourism and Agriculture in the provincial parliament. Donald Arthur Cardross Grant is a South African businessman and politician. He was the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Transport and Public Works from 2014 to 2019 and the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Education from 2009 to 2014. He was a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament from 2009 to 2019. Grant started his political career as a councillor at the Bitou Municipality. Grant is a member of the Democratic Alliance (DA).

Ivan Henry Meyer is a South African politician who has been serving as the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Agriculture since 2019. He has held multiple positions in the provincial cabinet. Meyer was elected to the Western Cape Provincial Parliament in 2009. He has also been the Federal Chairperson of the Democratic Alliance (DA) since November 2020,a position he previously held in an acting capacity from November 2019 to November 2020. Meyer had served as the First Deputy Federal Chairperson of the DA from 2010 to 2012,and again from 2015 to 2019. He was also the provincial leader of the party in the Western Cape from 2012 to 2015.

Nomafrench Mbombo is a South African academic and politician who has been the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Health since 2015 and a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament since 2014. She previously served as the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport from 2014 to 2015. Mbombo was the Federal Leader of the Democratic Alliance Women's Network from 2018 to 2021.

An indirect mayoral election was held at a special sitting of the Cape Town City Council on 6 November 2018 to determine the successor of former Mayor Patricia de Lille after she resigned on 31 October. Former Mayor and Provincial Minister of Community Safety,Dan Plato,of the Democratic Alliance won the election as the party holds a two-thirds majority in the city council.
Tertuis Alfred Simmers is a South African politician who has been serving as the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Human Settlements since May 2019. He has been a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament since 2017. Simmers is a member of the Democratic Alliance.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) held its leadership conference virtually between 31 October and 1 November 2020. It was originally scheduled to be held in May 2020,but was postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The previous congress was held in 2018. In October 2019,then-party leader Mmusi Maimane announced that the party would seek to hold a policy conference and early elective congress in 2020. Maimane and former party chair Athol Trollip have since resigned from their positions and the DA. The party elected John Steenhuisen and Ivan Meyer as their interim successors,respectively.
