The ThinkPad L series is a line of notebook computers from Lenovo as part of the ThinkPad family. As opposed to the ThinkPad T and X series, the L series has an added focus on economy and value; [1] they are the entry-level range for enterprise use, [2] and are also used by students. [3] The ThinkPad L series was introduced in 2010 replacing the R series.
The L series were originally designed with the theme of "green". [4] The first laptops in the series were described by Lenovo as being the environmentally friendliest products in the ThinkPad range. [4] Key features that contributed to the eco-friendly tag were the use of recycled material for packaging and post-consumer recycled content (such as office water jugs and used IT equipment). [4]
The ThinkPad R series introduced Lenovo's new product naming system, as indicated in the published tech specs. [5] The R61 laptop was replaced with the R400 and R500. [5] The first digit in the name referred to the display screen size of the product. [5] The R400 laptop had a 14.1" display, while the R500 laptop had a 15.4" display. [5] From the R series onwards, all ThinkPad models transitioned to widescreen displays. [5]

The L series laptops were launched in 2010 to replace the R series. The first two L series models – the ThinkPad L412 and the ThinkPad L512 laptops – were predicted to be launched on Earth Day in 2010. [6] The L410 and L510 models ships only in a India market.
The L412 and L512 laptops met eight military specifications, including parameters for high and low temperature, vibration, altitude and dust. However, the L-series laptops remained relatively lightweight starting at 5.2 lbs (≈2.36 kg). The L-series models were also reputed to be Lenovo's greenest laptops. [6] Lenovo indicated that they were 40% more power efficient than other laptops, and were made from recycled plastic from office water jugs and miscellaneous used equipment. [6]
The L-series laptops were made available with a variety of options, allowing them to be customized to handle business demands, or used as entry-level laptops. [6] The laptops could be equipped with Intel Core i3 or i5 processors, integrated graphics, or discrete AMD Radeon graphics. [6] Alternatively, the L-series entry-level model included a Celeron P4500 CPU, GB hard disk, and 1 GB RAM. [6]
The L series was designed to improve on the features of the R series laptops. [7] L-series laptops were reputed to increase performance over the R series by 150% and improve boot and shutdown times on Windows by 57%. [7] The laptop chassis was also 11% thinner and 12% lighter than the R-series models it was introduced to replace. [7]
Upon release, the ThinkPad L412 was praised by reviewers, with Laptop Magazine calling it a "value-priced business notebook". [8] The review also praised the laptop for green features, performance, and ergonomic design. [8]
The L412 was well received by Laptop Magazine, with the reviewer giving the laptop a score of 4 out of 5 stars. [8] Similarly, NOTEBOOKCHECK gave the ThinkPad L412 laptop a score of 75% (good) from an average of five scores from seven reviews. PCWorld listed the pros of the ThinkPad L412 laptop as being eco-friendly and affordable, while stating that the cons were the loud keyboard and low battery life. [9]
The ThinkPad L512 also received positive reviews, with reviewers comparing it with both the ThinkPad T series and the ThinkPad SL series. NotebookReview.com noted that the L512 was almost identical to comparable SL-series laptops in appearance, with "a consumer take on the rugged, business-oriented T-series ThinkPad". [10] The review also indicated that the chassis flex was less than the Edge 15, but more than the T-series laptops. [10] The L512 was praised for its screen protection with no distortion on the LCD despite heavy pressure applied to the cover, and the easy access to internal components. [10] The green features of the L512 also received notice, with Notebook Review stating that "The L series offers up to 30% post-consumer content, LED-backlit screens and green packaging that takes up 20% less space." [10]

In February 2011, the ThinkPad L420 and L520 were announced by Lenovo. [11]
Continuing the naming convention, the L420 has a 14" display, while the L520 has a 15" display. [11]
The 2011 line of L-series laptops included up to second generation Intel i7 processors, Intel HD Graphics or options for AMD Radeon discrete graphics, Lenovo Enhanced Experience 2.0 for Windows 7, and solid-state storage drives. [11] The L420 and L520 laptops offered battery life of up to 11.5 hours and 10.8 hours respectively with the optional 9-cell battery. Lenovo also indicated that the L-series laptops are lighter than similar, competing products.
The L420 and L520 continued the series trend of environmentally friendly features. The L series offered savings on operating costs of 40% annually, as compared to previous generation ThinkPads. [12] The L420 and L520 also featured up to 30% post-consumer recycled content. [12] According to Lenovo, office jugs and used IT equipment had been recycled into different L-series parts including the screen cover, the palm rest, and the top and bottom case. [12] As with most ThinkPad laptops, the L-series models featured certifications from Energy Star and EPEAT Gold. [12]
The Laptop Magazine review of the ThinkPad L420 indicated the pros as being the "great keyboard, affordable price, good battery life, and quick boot time". [13] The battery life marked an improvement over the ThinkPad L412, which was criticized for its low battery life. Laptop Magazine indicated that the cons were weak audio, multitouch gestures, and bland design. [13] Other reviews did not raise similar comments about design. For example, Zimbio only indicated that the L420 comes in a "simple, all-black design". [14] However, the audio was criticized by Zimbio as well, with the reviewer indicating that the sound was slightly muffled. [14]
The L520 was awarded a Business Buy award from Expert Reviews, which indicated in its review that the laptop would appeal to users who preferred "function over form". [15] The review praised the laptop for performance. [15] Points raised about the display were that the backlight was suitably bright and even, and while colors were clear, they were not as vibrant as those found on a glossy screen. [15] This was suggested by the reviewer to be due to the matte finish on the screen, meant to reduce glare from overhead lighting. [15] The keyboard was lauded, with the reviewers praising the large, molded keys that gave 'great feedback'. [15] The only point of contention was the function key, replacing the Control key at the bottom left corner of the keyboard. [15]

ThinkPad is a line of business-oriented laptop and tablet computers produced since 1992. The early models were designed, developed and marketed by International Business Machines (IBM) until it sold its PC business to Lenovo in 2005; since 2007, all new ThinkPad models have been branded Lenovo instead and the Chinese manufacturer has continued to develop and sell ThinkPads to the present day.
Dell Latitude is a line of laptop computers manufactured and sold by American company Dell Technologies. It is a business-oriented line, aimed at corporate enterprises, healthcare, government, and education markets; unlike the Inspiron and XPS series, which are aimed at individual customers, and the Vostro series, which is aimed at smaller businesses.
IdeaPad is a line of consumer-oriented laptop computers designed, developed and marketed by Lenovo. The IdeaPad mainly competes against computers such as Acer's Aspire, Dell's Inspiron and XPS, HP's Pavilion, Envy, Stream, and Spectre, Samsung's Sens and Toshiba's Satellite.
HP EliteBook is a line of business-oriented laptop computers made by Hewlett-Packard, marketed as a high-end line positioned above the ProBook series. The line was introduced in August 2008 as a replacement of the HP Compaq line of business laptops, and initially included mobile workstations until September 2013, when they were rebranded as HP ZBook. The EliteBook mainly competes against computer lineups such as Acer's TravelMate, Dell's Latitude, Lenovo's ThinkPad and Dynabook's Portégé and Tecra.
The ThinkPad E Series is a notebook computer series produced since 2010 by Lenovo. It is the most affordable sibling in the ThinkPad family and is aimed at small business users as well as education markets.
The ThinkPad T series is a line of notebook computers manufactured by Lenovo as part of the ThinkPad family. The T series is officially the flagship ThinkPad product, offering high-performance computers aimed at businesses and professionals. The ThinkPad X series was originally introduced in 2000 and was produced by IBM until 2005.
The ThinkPad X series is a line of notebook computers and convertible tablets produced by Lenovo as part of the ThinkPad family. The ThinkPad X series is traditionally the range best designed for mobile use, with ultraportable sizes and less power compared to the flagship ThinkPad T series. It was initially produced by IBM until 2005.
The ThinkPad W series laptops from Lenovo were described by the manufacturer as being "mobile workstations", and suit that description by being physically on the larger side of the laptop spectrum, with screens ranging from 15.6" to 17.3" in size. Most W series laptops offered high-end quad-core Intel Core processors with an integrated GPU as well as an Nvidia Quadro discrete GPU, utilizing Nvidia Optimus to switch between the two GPUs as required. Notable exceptions are the W500, which has ATI Mobility FireGL integrated workstation-class graphics, and the W550s, which is an Ultrabook-specification laptop with only a dual-core processor. The W series laptops offered independent software vendor (ISV) certifications from various vendors such as Adobe Systems and Autodesk for computer-aided design (CAD) and 3D modeling software.
The IdeaPad S Series is a series of notebook computers launched by Lenovo in October 2008. The IdeaPad S10 was initially scheduled for launch in September, but its release was delayed in the United States until October.
The first laptop in the IdeaPad U series was the U110 launched in 2008 by Lenovo. Showcased at CES 2008, the laptop also launched the IdeaPad series itself, and received the Best of CES 2008 award. The IdeaPad U series was a line of Lenovo's consumer line of laptops, combining Lenovo's traditional engineering with design changes that were significantly different from ThinkPad products.
The IdeaPad Y series was a consumer range of laptops produced by Lenovo, first announced in 2008. They were marketed as premium high performance laptops for multimedia and gaming, as part of the IdeaPad line.
In addition to the ThinkPad and IdeaPad laptops, Lenovo also offers a value-priced series of laptops. Called ‘Essential’ on the Lenovo website, the products available in this line include the G Series, B Series, and V Series. Launched in 2009, the first laptop in the Essential range was the G530.
The Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 is a convertible laptop created by Lenovo and first announced at the International CES 2012 in January. The Yoga 13 gets its name from its ability to take on various form factors due to its screen being mounted on a special two-way hinge.
Lenovo Yoga is a line of consumer-oriented laptop computers, tablets, and all-in-one computers designed, developed and marketed by Lenovo, named for their ability to assume multiple form factors due to a hinged screen. The line currently competes against other 2-in-1 PCs such as the HP Spectre.
The ThinkPad X1 series is a line of high-end ThinkPad laptop and tablet computers produced by Lenovo. It is a sub-series of the ThinkPad X series designed to be extra premium with material that make them lighter and portable, having been originally classed as Ultrabooks. While the ThinkPad T series is the flagship ThinkPad line, the ThinkPad X1 series's X1 Carbon specifically has been cited as a flagship model since its introduction in 2012.
The Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 2 Pro is an Ultrabook-class convertible device that can be used as both a tablet and laptop computer in the IdeaPad series. Lenovo unveiled the Yoga 2 Pro at the 2013 IFA in Berlin, Germany. It went on sale in the United States in October 2013. It comes in two colors, silver gray and clementine orange, and is designed for flexibility—allowing the user to use it in a variety of situations. Because of the durable hinge that allows the screen to swivel 360 degrees, the Yoga 2 Pro is able to fully utilize Windows 8 and its emphasis on touchscreen integration. The Yoga 2 Pro is the first laptop to earn a Green Mark certification from TUV that recognizes Lenovo for environmentally friendly manufacturing processes and low energy consumption.
The ThinkPad Yoga is a 2-in-1 convertible business-oriented tablet from Lenovo unveiled in September at the 2013 IFA in Berlin, Germany. It was released in the United States in November 2013.
The LenovoIdeaPad Flex is a 2-in-1-laptop line by Lenovo. Unlike the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga line of devices, the keyboard does not bend back entirely to allow use as a tablet, it is only a dual-mode laptop. Its keyboard rotates behind the display in order to put the device into "stand mode." Stand mode brings the user closer to the screen for watching videos and using touch-enabled apps and removes the visual distraction from the keyboard.
The Dell Inspiron series is a line of laptop computers made by American company Dell under the Dell Inspiron branding. The first Inspiron laptop model was introduced before 1999. Unlike the Dell Latitude line, which is aimed mostly at business/enterprise markets, Inspiron is a consumer-oriented line, often marketed towards individual customers as computers for everyday use.
