This Can't Exist is a compilation album by American post-hardcore band Native Nod, released by The Numero Group in 2023. The album contains every released recording by Native Nod, except the track "Mr. President" from the Fear of Smell compilation and their demo tape. [1]
Native Nod was formed in 1990 when Chris and Danny Leo met Justin Simon at a skatepark in Bloomfield. They became friends through their shared appreciation of music. Through Simon, they met Dave Lerner. [2]
Native Nod played many of their early shows at ABC No Rio, where they helped grow a scene that detested the often violent hardcore attitudes of CBGBs. [2] The band gained popularity from house concerts around New York and New Jersey, despite not having released any music at the time. [2]
Throughout their period together, the band prided themselves on being different from the hardcore punk scene. [2] They used the term emo as a distinction from those ideas. [2] Through this, the band would embrace humor into their music. [2]
The band would attempt to embark on a tour with the band Iconoclast, which would see the band travel to San Diego. However, the band had disagreements on whether to play a specific show, which led to the band pulling from the tour and disbanding. [2] The band played a formal last show at the Center Unitarian Church in Paramus with Current, Angel Hair, and The Yah Mos. [2]
In 2022, Numero Group announced that they would be reissuing the band's discography. [3] They released This Can't Exist on September 1, 2023 on streaming services and on vinyl. [4]

This Can't Exist generally received positive reviews from critics. Music magazine Under The Radar called the music unique with how their music was "one part Soulside and one part Slint, but really like neither and their own thing completely." [1] Raygun Busch of the band Chat Pile called it one of their favorite albums of 2023. [5] Andrew Sacher of BrooklynVegan called it one of the twenty-one albums that defined the 1990s New York post-hardcore scene. [6]

Radio 4 were an American punk band based in Brooklyn, New York. Formed in 1999, they claimed their music is "made in New York, is about New York, and sounds like New York".
The Execution of All Things is the second studio album released by Los Angeles-based indie pop band Rilo Kiley. Expanding on their previous musical sound that mostly incorporated guitars, vocals, percussion and pianos, the album contains heavy electronica sampling mixed into the songs in a rather unusual and displaced-sounding way. Also, unlike their previous tracks which were written in very traditional manners, the lyrics to the songs on Execution are very wordy and read like prose. Musically, the record has a very sunny disposition, with bouncing bass lines and simple melodies complemented by lead singer Jenny Lewis's vocal style, but the upbeat music is generally counterpointed by the often dark and morose subject matter that the lyrics reference. The album was released by Saddle Creek Records in Omaha, Nebraska, and the aforementioned features show the influence of that studio's associated Omaha Sound. It was recorded at Presto! in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Screamo is an subgenre of emo that emerged in the early 1990s and emphasizes "willfully experimental dissonance and dynamics". San Diego–based bands Heroin and Antioch Arrow pioneered the genre in the early 1990s, and it was developed in the late 1990s mainly by bands from the East Coast of the United States such as Pg. 99, Orchid, Saetia, and I Hate Myself. Screamo is strongly influenced by hardcore punk and characterized by the use of screamed vocals. Lyrical themes usually include emotional pain, death, romance, and human rights. The term "screamo" has frequently been mistaken as referring to any music with screaming.
Theodore Francis Leo is an American singer and musician. He is the frontman and lead guitarist of the rock group Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, and in 2013, he and Aimee Mann formed the indie rock duo The Both.

In their original run, the group released two full-length albums and a compilation of early recordings on Gern Blandsten before disbanding in 1997. In 2022, their music began being reissued by The Numero Group. Later that year, they reunited to play the Numero Twenty festival and a series of shows around the US.
Gouge Away is an American hardcore punk band based in Florida that formed in 2012. The band is influenced by post-hardcore and noise rock bands such as Pixies, the Jesus Lizard, Fugazi, Unwound, the Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower and Nirvana. Gouge Away released its debut album , Dies in 2016 to underground acclaim, and released its second album Burnt Sugar through Deathwish Inc. in 2018.

The emo revival, or fourth wave emo, was an underground emo movement which began in the late 2000s and flourished until the mid-to-late 2010s. The movement began towards the end of the 2000s third-wave emo, with Pennsylvania-based groups such as Tigers Jaw, Algernon Cadwallader and Snowing eschewing that era's mainstream sensibilities in favor of influence from 1990s Midwest emo. Radiator Hospital is an American indie rock band. Though songwriter Sam Cook-Parrott (vocals/guitar) is from Grand Rapids, Michigan, they are now based in Philadelphia. The rest of the current lineup is Cynthia Schemmer (guitar/vocals), Jon Rybicki (bass), and Jeff Bolt (drums).
