Thom Jan Marinus Haye (born 9 February 1995) is a professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Eredivisie club Heerenveen. Born in the Netherlands, he represents the Indonesia national team.

Contents

A youth product of AZ's academy, Haye made his first-team debut in 2014, before moving on to clubs such as Willem II, Lecce in Italy, ADO Den Haag, NAC Breda, and Heerenveen.

Dutch by birth, having appeared for the national team between under-15 and under-21 level. He was part of the team that won the 2012 UEFA European Under-17 Championship. In 2024, after gaining Indonesian citizenship, Haye made his debut for Indonesia on 26 March.

Club career

AZ

Haye was born in Amsterdam and is a youth exponent from AZ. He signed his first contract for AZ in February 2011. [3] On 23 February 2014, he made his full debut for AZ in the Eredivisie against Ajax in a 4–0 away defeat, coming on as a 70th-minute substitute for Celso Ortíz. [4] Haye scored his first professional goal in 24 September 2014, securing his club's advancement in the KNVB Cup in a 1–0 away win over EVV. [5] [6] He became a starter in the 2015–16 season, before making his debut in the UEFA Europa League in the 2016–17 season. [2]

Willem II

On 19 June 2016, Haye signed a two-year deal with Willem II, after his contract with AZ expired. [7] He made his debut on 6 August in a 4–1 home loss to Vitesse. [8]

Lecce

On 31 May 2018, Haye signed a two-year contract with Italian Serie B club Lecce. [9] [10] He made his debut on 7 August, in the Coppa Italia match against Feralpisalò, which ended in a 1–0 win after extra time. [11] He made his Serie B debut on 25 September, when he came on as a substitute in the second half of the 3–0 win against Livorno. [12] Haye would go on to make 13 appearances in Serie B that season, which ended in promotion to Serie A. [13]

On 2 September 2019, after having failed to make an appearance in the top flight, he terminated his contract by mutual agreement. [14]

ADO Den Haag

On 12 September 2019, Haye returned to the Netherlands to join Eredivisie side ADO Den Haag on a two-year deal. [15] [16] He made his first appearance upon his return in a 3–0 away loss to Emmen on 27 September, coming on as a late substitute for John Goossens. [17] He mostly appeared as a substitute during his six months with ADO. [2]

NAC Breda

In January 2020, Haye was sent on a six-month loan to NAC Breda in the second-tier Eerste Divisie. [18] He made his debut on 31 January in a 2–2 away draw against Excelsior. [19]

Haye signed a permanent deal with NAC on 1 July 2020, penning a three-year contract. [20]

Heerenveen

On 31 January 2022, Haye signed for Heerenveen for an undisclosed fee, on a contract until summer 2024. [21] [22] He made his debut for the club on 5 February as a starter in the 2–0 loss to Fortuna Sittard. [23] He immediately impressed, growing into a key player in his first six months at the club. [24] In 16 league appearances, he recorded five assists. [25]

International career

Haye was a Netherlands youth international, having appeared for the national team between under-15 and under-21 level. He was part of the team that won the 2012 UEFA European Under-17 Championship. [26] In December 2023, Haye went through a naturalization process to play for Indonesia. [27]

On 7 March 2024, Haye was called up to the Indonesia national team for two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification matches against Vietnam. [28] He made his debut in the second match on 26 March 2024, providing an assist for Jay Idzes in an eventual 3–0 win. [29]

Style of play

Haye started his career as an attacking midfielder but adapted to various positions as he progressed. [16] During his two seasons with Willem II, he frequently operated as a left winger, utilising his strong and accurate right foot to cut inside from the flank. [30] His versatility made him an exceptional utility player. As his career advanced, he transitioned to a more defensive role, primarily playing as a central midfielder. [31]

Personal life

Haye is of Indonesian descent from his maternal grandfather who came from Central Java city of Surakarta and maternal grandmother who came from North Sulawesi. [32]

On 18 March 2024, Haye officially acquired Indonesian citizenship. [33]

The 2010–11 Eredivisie is the 55th season of Eredivisie since its establishment in 1955. It began on 6 August 2010 with the first matches of the season and ended on 29 May 2011 with the last matches of the European competition and relegation playoffs. FC Twente were the reigning champions, having won their first Dutch championship the previous season. A total of 18 teams took part in the league. Ajax won their 30th title after beating FC Twente 3–1 on 15 May 2011.

The 2012–13 season was Feyenoord's 105th season of play. It was their 57th season in the Eredivisie and its 91st consecutive season in the highest Dutch football division. The club ended its league campaign in third place, being undefeated at home, and reached the quarter-finals of the KNVB Cup. Their European campaign ended after four matches, two each in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League. It was the club's second season under manager Ronald Koeman.

The 2014–15 FC Utrecht season was the club's 45th season of existence and its 45th season in the Eredivisie.

The 2008–09 season was Feyenoord, in Dutch Eredivisie. the first season under new coach Gertjan Verbeek. On 14 January 2009, the bigger part of the players group declared they did not have any confidence in Gertjan Verbeek. Although the board and the supporters completely backed up Verbeek, the choice was made to sack the trainer because of financial considerations. The rest of the season Leon Vlemmings, who was Verbeek's assistant from the start of the season, was the manager.

The 2006–07 season was Feyenoord's 51st consecutive season playing in the Eredivisie, the top division of Dutch football. Feyenoord finished 7th in the 2006–07 Eredivisie and did not qualify for the 2007–08 UEFA Cup. In the 2006–07 KNVB Cup they lost in the 3rd round to RKC Waalwijk. But the absolute worst date in the season was 19 January 2007. On this date the UEFA decided to resign Feyenoord from the 2006–07 UEFA Cup after the supporters misbehaved in the game in and versus Nancy. The game versus Tottenham Hotspur F.C. did not continue. On 3 may head coach Erwin Koeman handed in his resignation due to motivational problems after a troublesome season.

During the 2018–19 season, PSV Eindhoven participated in the Eredivisie, the KNVB Cup, the Johan Cruyff Shield and the UEFA Champions League.

During the 2019–20 season, ADO Den Haag participated in the Eredivisie and the KNVB Cup. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Eredivisie season was abandoned with ADO Den Haag in 17th place. They were knocked out in the first round of the KNVB Cup, losing in the first round at Fortuna Sittard.

The 2020–21 Eredivisie was the 65th season of the Eredivisie since its establishment in 1955. The season began on 12 September 2020 and concluded on 16 May 2021.

The 2020–21 FC Utrecht season was the club's 51st season in existence and the 51st consecutive season in the top flight of Dutch football. In addition to the domestic league, FC Utrecht participated in this season's editions of the KNVB Cup. In the regular season, they have qualified for the play-offs, for this they played for a place in the second round of the Conference League.

The 2018–19 season was SC Heerenveen's 54th season in existence and the club's 26th consecutive season in the top flight of Dutch football. In addition to the domestic league, SC Heerenveen participated in this season's edition of the KNVB Cup.
