Thomas Henry Copeman III [1] (born 1959) [2] is a retired officer of the United States Navy. [3] In mid-2009 he was appointed commandant of the Guantanamo Bay detention camps, in Cuba. His final assignment was as Commander, Naval Surface Forces Pacific from July 2012 to August 2014. [4] [5]
Copeman graduated from high school in Honolulu, Hawaii, after which he attended Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in biology in 1981. He was commissioned 2 April 1982, at the Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. Copeman is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He holds a Master of Science in Administration degree from Central Michigan University and also completed the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Seminar XXI program on National Security Affairs.
Copeman served in cruisers and destroyers in both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets. His first assignment was as Electrical officer and Main Propulsion assistant in USS Leftwich. His second division officer tour was as a gas turbine inspector for Pacific Fleet Propulsion Examining Board. Following graduation from Surface Warfare Officers School Department Head Course in 1987, he reported as the commissioning engineer officer in USS Philippine Sea and participated in combat operations in the Persian Gulf War while assigned in her. Subsequent sea tours include executive officer in USS Lake Champlain and as commanding officer USS Benfold. Following a tour as fleet operations officer in 2nd Fleet, Copeman commanded Destroyer Squadron 28, where he deployed, as the Sea Combat commander, in the George Washington Carrier Strike Group to the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
While ashore, Copeman served in the U.S. Strategic Command, Omaha, Nebraska, as an action officer in the Current Operations Directorate (J31). His next shore tour was as a BMC4I requirements officer in the Theater Air Warfare Branch in the Surface Warfare Directorate (N76), Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. He served as executive assistant to the deputy commander and chief of staff, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, the director of Navy Senate Liaison in the Office of Legislative Affairs and the chief of staff for Naval Surface Forces, San Diego, California. He served as deputy chief of staff for operations and training for the U.S. Pacific Fleet. He then served as commander, Joint Task Force, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, followed by a period as chief of legislative affairs. He retired from the Navy on 1 October 2014.[ citation needed ]
Copeman has been awarded the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (6 awards), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (3 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (2 awards), Navy Achievement Medal as well as various unit and campaign awards.[ citation needed ]

Gary Roughead is a former United States Navy officer who served as the 29th Chief of Naval Operations from 2007 to 2011. He previously served as Commander, United States Fleet Forces Command from May 17 to September 29, 2007. Prior to that, Roughead served as the 31st Commander, United States Pacific Fleet from 2005 to 2007. In 2011, he retired from the U.S. Navy after 38 years of service.
Vice Admiral David Charles Nichols Jr. is a retired senior U.S. Navy officer and Naval Flight Officer. At the time of his retirement in September 2007, he was the Deputy Commander of United States Central Command (USCENTCOM) at MacDill AFB, Florida.

Eugene Parks "Dennis" Wilkinson was a United States Navy officer. He was selected for three historic command assignments. The first, in 1954, was as the first commanding officer of USS Nautilus, the world's first nuclear-powered submarine. The second was as the first commanding officer of USS Long Beach, America's first nuclear surface ship. The third was in 1980 when he was chosen as the first President and CEO of the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) from which he retired in 1984.
Mark Howard Buzby is a retired United States Navy rear admiral who served as the Administrator of the United States Maritime Administration. He retired from the Navy in 2013 and joined Carnival Cruise Line's Safety & Reliability Review Board. Buzby was nominated to be MARAD Administrator in June 2017 by President Donald Trump, and confirmed to the position by the United States Senate on August 3, 2017. He resigned from the post on January 11, 2021, along with Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao, to protest the 2021 United States Capitol attack.
Mark William Balmert is retired United States Navy rear admiral. His last command was the joint Navy and Marine Corps Expeditionary Strike Group 3. He retired from the Navy in 2008 and joined Northrop Grumman as a Strategic Senior Consulting Manager.
Robert Thomas Moeller (1951–2011) was a United States Navy vice admiral who last served in active duty as the first deputy to the commander for military operations, U.S. Africa Command (USAFRICOM), until his departure in April 2010. USAFRICOM was formally stood up in October 2007, as a subunified command initially of U.S. European Command, under the command of General William E. Ward, who was first commander of USAFRICOM.

Carol M. Pottenger is a retired United States Navy flag officer. She was among the first women to be assigned to serve at sea in 1978, the first female admiral to command a major combat organization, Amphibious Force 7th Fleet/Expeditionary Strike Group Seven, encompassing the amphibious forces assigned to the western Pacific; and the first female admiral to lead a combatant force "type command", Navy Expeditionary Combat Command, charged with the manning, training and equipping of over 40,000 expeditionary sailors in preparation for combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as global security assistance operations. Her final naval post was with NATO as deputy chief of staff for capability and development at Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, Norfolk, Virginia, the first female officer to hold this position.

Donald Bradford Beary was a vice admiral of the United States Navy. His career included service in both World War I and World War II and a tour as President of the Naval War College. He commanded a wide variety of ships and organizations, and is particularly noted for his leadership during World War II in establishing and directing a large-scale U.S. Navy training program and for his pioneering and highly successful work as a commander of U.S. Navy underway replenishment forces.

John Blackwelder Nowell Jr. is a retired vice admiral in the United States Navy. Nowell assumed duties as the navy's 59th Chief of Naval Personnel on May 24, 2019.
