This small suburb is one of South Australia's most expensive. Although sales are rare, houses on Fitzroy Terrace and Churcher Street were valued well over $1 million in 2006.[ citation needed ]

History

Formerly part of Fitzroy, the suburb is thought to be named after the original grantee of that area, one John Batty Thorngate. Arriving from Gosport, Hampshire, Thorngate was granted his land in 1840. [6]

It ranks among the most expensive suburbian areas in South Australia. It is adjacent to Prospect, Ovingham, Thorngate and, across the Adelaide Park Lands, North Adelaide.

Gosport is a town in Hampshire on the south coast of the United Kingdom.At the 2011 Census, its population was 82,622.It is situated on a peninsula on the western side of Portsmouth Harbour, opposite the city of Portsmouth, to which it is linked by the Gosport Ferry. Gosport lies south-east of Fareham, to which it is linked by a Bus Rapid Transit route and the A32. Until the last quarter of the 20th century, Gosport was a major naval town associated with the defence and supply infrastructure of Her Majesty's Naval Base (HMNB) Portsmouth. As such over the years extensive fortifications were created. The town is still home to HMS Sultan and a Naval Armament Supply Facility, as well as a Helicopter Repair base. The Town area of the Borough, including Newtown, consists of the town centre, Stoke Road shopping area, Walpole Park, Royal Clarence Yard and three modern marinas: Royal Clarence, Gosport Marina and Haslar Marina. As part of the Renaissance of Portsmouth Harbour Millennium project, a large sundial, known as the Millennium Timespace, was installed on the harbour front in 2000. Geography

Thorngate is one of Adelaide's smallest suburbs. It is bounded to the north by Carter Street, to the south by Fitzroy Terrace, in the west by Prospect Road and the east by Main North Road. The only other streets in the suburb are Churcher Street and Thorngate Street. [7]

Main North Road is the major north-south arterial route through the suburbs north of the Adelaide City Centre in the city of Adelaide, South Australia. It continues north through the settled areas of South Australia and is a total of 307 kilometres (191 mi) long, from North Adelaide to 21 kilometres (13 mi) out of Port Augusta. It follows the route established in the early years of the colony by explorer John Horrocks and was a major route for farmers and graziers to reach the capital, passing through rich farmland and the Clare Valley wine region. In 2011, the section of road between Gawler to Wilmington was renamed Horrocks Highway.

The 2006 Census by the Australian Bureau of Statistics counted 180 persons in Thorngate on census night. Of these, half were female. [1]

Thorngate is in the South Australian House of Assembly electoral district of Adelaide and the Australian House of Representatives division of Adelaide.

The local electoral booths tend to swing strongly to the Liberal Party, even though the electoral district to which Thorngate belongs is historically marginal or leaning to the Labor Party.[ citation needed ]
