Tiia Piili (born April 16, 1979 in Lappeenranta, Finland) is a Finnish gymnast who has won the Federation of International Sports, Aerobics and Fitness (FISAF) sport aerobics World Championship four times. [1]
As a youngster, Piili pursued various sporting interests including ballet, rhythmic gymnastics, artistic gymnastics and tennis. She also played the piano and had an interest in music and performance that she manifested as a member of a drama club and a circus club. Her early interest in sports and music has been cited as a foundation for her future success in sports aerobics. [2]
At age fourteen, after seeing sports aerobic on television for the first time, she became strongly interested in the sport but was barred from participation because of her age. At age sixteen she began training with the goal of competing when she turned eighteen. However, to her fortune a novice category for athletes ages sixteen to eighteen was introduced to the Finnish Championships that very year. Thus Piili was able to compete immediately. [2]
After graduating from secondary school in Lappeenranta, Piili moved to the town of Jyväskylä in Central Finland to train. She won her first World Championship in 2001 at a competition held in Agadir, Morocco. While in Morocco for that competition, she consumed bacteria-tainted food and developed an infection in her back that impeded her training for a period. She recovered and proceeded to win the 2004 World Championship in Adelaide, South Australia, the 2005 World Championship in Ghent, Belgium, and the 2006 World Championship in Rotterdam, Netherlands. In addition to her four World Championships, Piili is a four-time winner of the European Championship and a five-time winner of the Finnish Championship, and holds a total of fourteen World and European Championship medals. [1] [5]
In 2004, as the "most successful representative of Sports Aerobics", Piili was selected as "Aerobic athlete of the year" by the Finnish Sports Federation. She almost won the title of top Finnish athlete overall, but lost to the alpine skier Tanja Poutiainen. [6]
Piili has appeared twice on the Finnish game show Kymppitonni . [7] She also did a segment on the Finnish television show Fit 4 You in which she kickbikes up Paloheinä hill in Helsinki. [8]
She currently still lives in Jyväskylä, Central Finland. [8]
Gymnastics is a type of sport that includes physical exercises requiring balance, strength, flexibility, agility, coordination, and endurance. The movements involved in gymnastics contribute to the development of the arms, legs, shoulders, back, chest, and abdominal muscle groups. Gymnastics evolved from exercises used by the ancient Greeks that included skills for mounting and dismounting a horse, and from circus performance skills.
Larisa Semyonovna Latynina is a former Soviet artistic gymnast. Between 1956 and 1964 she won 14 individual Olympic medals and four team medals. She holds the record for the most Olympic gold medals by a gymnast, male or female, with 9. Her total of 18 Olympic medals was a record for 48 years. She held the record for individual event medals, winning 14 over 52 years. She is credited with helping to establish the Soviet Union as a dominant force in gymnastics.
The International Gymnastics Federation is the body governing competition in all disciplines of gymnastics. Its headquarters is in Lausanne, Switzerland. It was founded on July 23, 1881, in Liège, Belgium, making it the world's oldest existing international sports organisation. Originally called the European Federation of Gymnastics, it had three member countries—Belgium, France and the Netherlands—until 1921, when non-European countries were admitted and it received its current name.
Lavinia Corina Miloșovici is a retired Romanian artistic gymnast. An exceptionally successful athlete on the international competition circuit, Miloșovici, also known as "Milo" in the gymnastics community, is considered to be one of Romania's top gymnasts ever and one of the most prolific female all-around medalists ever, earning a total 19 World Championships or Olympic medals in a span of six years. She medalled in every single World Championships meet, Olympic Games and European Championships between 1991 and 1996, and is only the third female gymnast ever, after Larisa Latynina and Věra Čáslavská, to win at least one World Championships or Olympic title on all four events. Miloșovici was also the last gymnast along with Lu Li to ever receive the perfect mark of 10.0 in an Olympic competition and the last to receive the benchmark score of 9.95 at the World Championships. She was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 2011. Her trademarks included her four-event mastery, consistency, longevity, versatile skill set, and leadership abilities.
Alexandra Georgiana Eremia is a Romanian former artistic gymnast. Her best apparatus was the balance beam on which she had an interesting routine starting with her trademark split mount. She is an Olympic and a European gold medalist with the team. Individually, she won several medals on beam in various international competitions. She is the 2004 Olympic bronze medalist and the 2004 European silver medalist on this event.
Aerobic gymnastics or sport aerobics is a competitive sport originating from traditional aerobics in which complex, high-intensity movement patterns and elements of varying difficulty are performed to music.
The age requirements in gymnastics are established by the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) and regulate the age at which athletes are allowed to participate in senior-level competitions.
Mirela Ana Pașca is a retired Romanian artistic gymnast, who competed internationally between 1990 and 1992. She is an Olympic silver medalist and a world bronze medalist with the team. Individually, she is a world bronze medalist and a European champion on uneven bars. She was also an uneven bars finalist at the 1992 Olympic Games.
Vanda Maria Hădărean is a retired Romanian artistic gymnast who competed in international events between 1990 and 1993. She is an Olympic silver medalist and a world bronze medalist with the team and a European all around bronze medalist. She is also a successful fitness model and she has won various world class fitness competitions. She is a four-time Ms. Fitness World and a four-time Ms. Fitness Canada (2006–2009). She also coaches, trains, provides consultation services to gymnasts and fitness models under the brand name “Inspired by Vanda”. She is also known for her breakout photo series in the Romanian Playboy magazine.
Daniela Mărănducă Nicolai is a retired artistic and aerobic gymnast. During her career she won nine medals at the World and European championships. She is currently a coach of the Romanian junior national artistic gymnastics team.
Hanna-Riikka Sallinen is a Finnish retired ice hockey, bandy, rinkball, and pesäpallo player. She is one of the most highly decorated players to have ever competed in international ice hockey.
Izabela Daniela Lăcătuş is a retired Romanian artistic and aerobic gymnast. She was an alternate to the artistic gymnastics team at the 1992 Olympics. After retiring from artistic gymnastics she had a career in aerobic gymnastics, winning 16 world and continental medals including the 2000 individual world title.
Lăcrămioara Filip (-Moldovan) is a retired Romanian artistic and aerobic gymnast. She is a world silver medalist with the team and a European gold medalist on the group event. She is also known to be the first gymnast to perform a tucked double front dismount from the uneven bars. Currently she is a gymnastics coach at the Romanian National Olimpic Center in Deva where she trains the national juniors team.
Mihaela Pohoaţă is a Romanian aerobic gymnast. During her career she won five world championships medals and three European championships gold medals. She is a two time world bronze medalist on the individual event.
Aurelia Ciurea is a Romanian aerobic gymnast.
Oksana Grishina is a Russian former gymnast and professional fitness competitor. She retired from competitive fitness in 2017, after earning her fourth consecutive Ms. Fitness Olympia title and winning ten consecutive Arnold Classic competitions. Grishina currently runs a pole fitness competition league, Oksana Grishina's O.G. Pole Fitness, which holds a professional pole sport championship at the Mr. Olympia in Las Vegas, and a pro-am pole fitness competition at the Legion Sports Fest in Long Beach, California.
Oana Corina Constantin is a retired senior Romanian aerobic gymnast. She is the 2013 World Games Champion in Individual Woman, 2016 World Champion in Individual Woman, 2014 World Champion in Trio and Group, as well as 2015 and 2011 European Champion in Individual Woman. She has been called Romania's most successful aerobic gymnast since Izabela Lăcătuș.
Rūta Bunkutė is a current IFBB/NPC Amateur fitness and figure competitor from Lithuania.
Lubov "Lubi" Gazov is an Austrian aerobic gymnast. At the 2012 World Championships in Sofia, Gazov won 3rd place in the single female category. One year later, she obtained bronze at the World Games in Cali. The title of European Vice-Champion followed at the end of 2013. She became World Champion in 2014 in Cancun.
The South American Gymnastics Confederation (CONSUGI) organizes South American Gymnastics Championships in different disciplines of gymnastics: men's and women's artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, trampoline and tumbling, as well as aerobic gymnastics.
