Torgau (foaled 1997) was an Irish-bred, British-trained champion Thoroughbred racehorse. As a two-year-old in 1999 she won the Group Two Cherry Hinton Stakes and finished second in the Group One Moyglare Stud Stakes and the Group One Cheveley Park Stakes. At the time of her success, her trainer, Giles Bravery had only nine horses in his stable. Torgau was named European Champion Two-year-old Filly of 1999 at the Cartier Racing Awards. She was retired after two unsuccessful runs as a three-year-old.

Background

Torgau was sired by the Middle Park Stakes winner Zieten out of the mare Snoozy Time. Zieten was not a notable success as a stallion although he had an excellent first season [1] and has been described as "a good source of fast two-year-olds". [2] Snoozy Time, a daughter of The Derby runner-up Cavo Doro, won a minor race and was a half-sister to the successful sprinter Grey Desire (Duke of York Stakes). Apart from Torgau, her most notable performer was Fujiyama Crest, [3] who provided Frankie Dettori with the last of his seven winners on Champions' Day at Ascot in 1996. [4] Torgau is inbred 4x4 to Sir Gaylord (see below).

Torgau was sent to the sales as a foal in November 1997, when she was sold for 13,000 guineas to the bloodstock agent Paul Thorman. A year later Thorman sold her for the same price at the Tattersalls October sales. [3] [5] She was sent into training with Giles Bravery at his Revida Place stable at Newmarket, Suffolk.

Racing career

1997: two-year-old season

Torgau began her career at Catterick in a maiden race in June 1999. She started a 14/1 outsider in a six-horse field, but after being behind in the early stages, she was brought through to take the lead by Kevin Darley and won by two lengths from the favourite Littlefeather. [6] Giles Bravery said after the race that Torgau was his best two-year-old and would be sent to Royal Ascot. [7]

At the Royal meeting two weeks later, Torgau was sent off at odds of 25/1 for the Group Three Queen Mary Stakes. She finished sixth, after starting slowly, but finished less than two and a half lengths behind the winner, Shining Hour. [8] Despite her defeat, she was stepped up in class again for her next start in the Cherry Hinton Stakes at the July Meeting at Newmarket in which she was ridden by Gary Stevens. New tactics were employed, with Torgau sent into the lead from the start. She was never headed, and ran on strongly to win by one and a quarter lengths from the favourite, Hoh Dear. [9] After the race Bravery spoke at length about the problems of smaller trainers, explaining that he had thirty-one empty boxes at his forty box stable, and saying that, from a financial point of view, training racehorses was "unbelievably idiotic." [10] Stevens was pleased with the filly, commenting that Torgau was "just enjoying herself out there."

Torgau was then moved up to the highest level when she was sent to Ireland for the Group One Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh. Her rivals included Littlefeather, who had won all three of her starts since the Catterick race, the unbeaten Preseli and the Aidan O'Brien-trained Amethyst. Torgau disputed the lead in the early stages and went into a clear lead a furlong from the finish but was caught close home and beaten three quarters of a length by Preseli. [11] Torgau's final start of the season came in the Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket, one of the two Group One races for two-year-old fillies in England. Once again, Torgau was sent into the lead from the start by her jockey Michael Hills. In the final furlong she was overtaken by the Mick Channon-trained Seazun, and although she ran on under pressure, she was beaten by a head. [12]

Before her run at Newmarket, Torgau had been sold to American interests, with the intention of racing her in the United States, but in fact she stayed at Newmarket to be prepared for the following year's 1000 Guineas. [13]

1998: three-year-old season

On her three-year-old debut, Torgau was sent straight for the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket. Bravery did not run her in a trial as she "took a long time to get rid of her winter coat." [14] Despite her status as champion two-year-old, she was a 25/1 outsider, probably because both her breeding and racing style suggested that the one mile distance was likely to be too far- Bravery had said that "six furlongs is definitely her best trip". [13] She tracked the leaders, but could make no impression in the closing stages and finished seventh of the eighteen runners behind Lahan. [15]

Torgau was then sent to the United States and joined the stable of Jenine Sahadi. On her first American start she finished last in the Grade II Honeymoon Handicap at Hollywood Park. [16]

She was retired soon afterwards and sent to Keeneland where she was sold for a reported $900,000. [17]

Assessment

In the International Classification for two-year-old fillies, Torgau was rated on 111, making her the eighth-best filly of her generation in Europe, two pounds below the top-weights Goldamix, Lady of Chad and Preseli. The senior handicapper, Geoffrey Gibbs described the fillies of 1999 as a "particularly disappointing" group. [18]

Torgau was named European Champion Two-year-old Filly of 1999 at the Cartier Racing Awards. [19]

Stud career

Several of Torgau's foals have reached the racecourse and at least two of them, Knapton Hill and Timur Danon have won, but none of her offspring have been top class. In November 2006 she was sold at Tattersalls for 58,000 gns to David Redvers Bloodstock. [3]

At the end of her two-year-old season she was transferred to the Godolphin Racing team, but never ran again.

Lemon Souffle was a European champion Thoroughbred racehorse, bred and trained in the United Kingdom. In the International Classification for 1993 she was the highest-rated two-year-old filly in Europe and was named European Champion Two-Year-Old Filly at the Cartier Racing Awards. In her championship year she won four of her five races including Cherry Hinton Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes. She was also successful at three, winning the Falmouth Stakes. Lemon Souffle was kept in training at four but did not appear on the racecourse and was retired to stud. She was later sold to be a broodmare in Japan.

Sayyedati was one of the leading two-year-old fillies in Europe in 1992, recording Group One successes in the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh and the Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket Racecourse. After being beaten on her three-year-old debut, Sayyedati won the Classic 1000 Guineas. She went on to become a successful international performer over a mile, winning the Prix Jacques Le Marois at Deauville in 1993 and the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood as a five-year-old. Salsabil was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from September 1989 to October 1990 she ran nine times and won seven races. Salsabil was one of the leading two-year-old fillies in Europe in 1989, winning two races including the Group One Prix Marcel Boussac at the Longchamp. After winning the Fred Darling Stakes on her three-year-old debut, Salsabil won both of Britain's Classic races for fillies: the 1000 Guineas over one mile at Newmarket and the Oaks over one and a half miles at Epsom. She was then raced against colts and became the first filly for ninety years to win the Irish Derby at the Curragh. In autumn, Salsabil added a victory in the Prix Vermeille at Longchamp but finished unplaced when favourite for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in October. Salsabil was then retired to stud where she had success as a broodmare before dying of cancer in 1996.

Sky Lantern is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. She was one of the leading European two-year-old fillies of 2012 when she won the Moyglare Stud Stakes in Ireland. In May 2013 she won the 200th running of the 1000 Guineas. She followed up with a win in the Coronation Stakes, and recovered from a controversial defeat by Elusive Kate in the Falmouth Stakes to record a fourth Group One win in the Sun Chariot Stakes. She remained in training as a four-year-old but failed to reproduce her best form, finishing unplaced in three races.

Marling was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was one of the leading European two-year-olds of 1991 when she was unbeaten in four races including the Queen Mary Stakes and Cheveley Park Stakes. In the following year she was narrowly beaten in the 1000 Guineas but went on to win the Irish 1000 Guineas, Coronation Stakes and Sussex Stakes. She was retired to stud at the end of 1992 and has had some success as a dam of winners.

Crimplene was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from May 1999 until November 2000 she competed in seven countries and won six of her sixteen races. In the summer of 2000 she produced her best form, winning the German 1000 Guineas, Irish 1,000 Guineas, Coronation Stakes and Nassau Stakes. She was retired to stud at the end of the year and died in 2005 at the age of eight.

Park Appeal was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was one of the leading two-year-old fillies of 1984 when she was undefeated in four races including the Moyglare Stud Stakes in Ireland and the Cheveley Park Stakes in Britain. Her later career was disappointing and she was retired with a record of five wins in eight races between August 1984 and August 1986. Having been bought by Sheikh Mohammed at the end of her two-year-old season, she later became a highly successful broodmare for the Darley Stud.

Chriselliam was an Irish-bred British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. In 2013 she won two of her five races in Europe, establishing herself as one of the leading British-trained fillies of her generation by winning the Fillies' Mile. She was then sent to the United States in November where she recorded a decisive win in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. She was awarded the title of Cartier Champion Two-year-old Filly and was officially rated the best two-year-old filly in Europe. She died in February 2014 after contracting a bacterial infection.

Tiggy Wiggy Thoroughbred racehorse

Tiggy Wiggy is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. In 2014, she won six out of eight races including the Weatherbys Super Sprint, Lowther Stakes and Cheveley Park Stakes and was voted Cartier Champion Two-year-old Filly. She was one of the best juvenile fillies in Britain in 1998 when she won the Empress Stakes, Cherry Hinton Stakes and Cheveley Park Stakes as well as finishing second in the Lowther Stakes. In the following year she finished second in the 1000 Guineas on her seasonal debut and went on to win the Flying Fillies' Stakes, as well as being placed in the Coronation Stakes, Oak Tree Stakes and Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes. She was retired from racing to become a broodmare and produced at least seven winners.

Seazun is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from April 1999 until September 2000 she won two of her ten races. As a two-year-old she was one of the best juvenile fillies of her generation, recording a victory over a strong field in the Cheveley Park Stakes after finishing second in the Sirenia Stakes. She failed to win in the following year but finished second in the Fred Darling Stakes and fourth in both the 1000 Guineas and the Irish 1,000 Guineas. Since her retirement from racing she has had some success as a dam of winners in Japan.

Red Bloom is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from July 2003 until October 2006 she ran nineteen times, competing in four different countries and won six times as well as being placed on seven occasions. As a juvenile she graduated from a maiden race victory to record her biggest success in the Group One Fillies' Mile. In the following year she was the beaten favourite for the 1000 Guineas but won the Strensall Stakes. She remained in training for two more seasons, winning the Pipalong Stakes and two editions of the Blandford Stakes. Apart from her wins, she reached the frame in the Coronation Stakes, Pretty Polly Stakes, Nassau Stakes and Prix Jean Romanet. At the end of her racing career she became broodmare for her owner, the Cheveley Park Stud.

Lumiere is a British Thoroughbred racehorse. She was one of the best British two-year-old fillies of 2015 when she ran second in the Lowther Stakes before winning the Cheveley Park Stakes. Her only win in the following year came in the Sir Henry Cecil Stakes but she was placed in both the Sceptre Stakes and the Challenge Stakes.

Brave Anna American-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Brave Anna is an American-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. As a two-year-old in 2016 she was rated the joint-best filly of her generation trained in Europe, inferior only to the American filly Lady Aurelia. After running moderately on her racecourse debut she won a maiden race before taking the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot. She was unplaced in her next two races before ending her season with a win in the Cheveley Park Stakes.

Preseli is an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was one of the best two-year-olds in Ireland in 1999 when she was undefeated in three races including the Debutante Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes. In the following spring she took her winning streak to four when she won the Derrinstown Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial but was beaten in her next three races that year, producing her best subsequent effort when narrowly beaten in the Pretty Polly Stakes. In 2001 she raced in North America, but failed to reproduce her European form. As a broodmare she has produced several minor winners.
