The Tornado outbreak of August 24, 2006, was an outbreak of 14 tornadoes in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota on August 24, 2006. The outbreak spawned three F3 tornadoes, one of which caused a fatality in Kasota, Minnesota. The severe weather outbreak also produced many reports of severe hail which caused $130 million in damage across several states.

Outbreak description

A moderate risk of severe weather was issued by the SPC for August 24, with a significant threat for tornadoes, some of which could be strong. The main threat area ran from North Dakota southeastward into Minnesota and northern Iowa to western Wisconsin. [1]

The tornadoes began about noon central time in North Dakota, with three tornadoes produced there. Then, during the mid-afternoon hours, 11 more tornadoes touched down, 9 of which were in South Dakota. Two of the tornadoes in South Dakota were rated F3 on the Fujita scale - one of which touched passed near the town of Wolsey and another near Eureka. The Wosley storm was one of four tornadoes spawned in the same area from Wessington to Cavour. The three others storms in Beadle County were rated from F0 to F2. [2]

The most destructive tornado of the day was a multiple vortex F3 tornado that hit the Minnesota cities of Nicollet and Kasota. It tracked a path of 33 miles, killed one person, and caused $30 million in damages. [3] This tornado passed near but did not hit the city of St. Peter, which was devastated by the 1998 Comfrey – St. Peter tornado outbreak.

Casualties and damage

One person, a 90-year-old man, was killed when he was pinned by a tree while inside a home in Kasota. [4] Thirty-seven people were reported to have had injuries from that tornado. Five others were injured in the remaining tornadoes on this day, and in all there was $44 million in damages.

Tornado devastated multiple farms, destroying homes, barns, vehicles, farming equipment, and grain bins. Trees were defoliated and debarked, and a well-anchored mobile home was completely destroyed. Several well-built homes were heavily damaged, and a few were moved slightly off of their foundations. A large barn was destroyed, and a vehicle was moved 20 feet. Significant tree damage also occurred.

Large tornado. Near Vayland, several farmsteads were damaged. A mobile home was flipped and destroyed, a grain storage building was flipped onto a car, and several homes had significant roof and window damage. Numerous trees were snapped as well. Near Wessington, the tornado struck a farm and destroyed a house and several outbuildings. Five large metal high-tension truss towers were toppled in that area as well. Several farms near Wolsey were completely destroyed, and vehicles were thrown up to 50 feet away from where they originated. Some of the vehicles were badly mangled, and a pickup truck was partially wrapped around a tree. [12] Trees were snapped and debarked, power lines were downed, livestock was killed, and a small highway bridge was severely damaged before the tornado dissipated near Huron. Overall, 8 homes were destroyed, and several others were damaged. Aerial survey revealed cycloidal scour marks in farm fields. Two people were injured. [13] [14]

1 death - Large, long-tracked, multiple-vortex tornado touched down in Nicollet and heavily damaged multiple homes, some of which were shifted from their foundations. One home in town lost much of its second story. The tornado rapidly intensified and completely leveled a house just south of St. Peter. Several farms in that area sustained major damage, along with a power substation. A total of 57 homes in Nicollet County were damaged, some of which were totaled. Vehicles were tossed and damaged as well. [19] In Le Sueur County, the tornado clipped the north side of Kasota, where over 100 homes suffered some damage, dozens of homes had major damage, and three were completely leveled. One man was killed in that area when a tree crashed through his roof. A few homes were also destroyed at nearby Lake Emily. Several farms were impacted and hundreds of farm animals were killed further along the path before the tornado dissipated near Waterville. Farm fields were heavily scoured along much of the path, and approximately five thousand acres of corn and soybeans were ruined. 37 people were injured, some of them severely. [20] [21]

Non-tornadic events

A wider area, from Montana to Michigan was also affected by large hail storms throughout the day. Southern Minnesota was especially hard hit, with hail to 4.25 in (10.8 cm) diameter reported in New Prague, and $50 million in property damage sustained in and around Northfield. Two car dealerships in Northfield lost their entire inventory of vehicles. [22] In Minnesota there was $125 million in hail damage reported.

The Tornado outbreak sequence of March 9–13, 2006 was an early season and long lasting tornado outbreak sequence in the central United States that started on the morning of March 9 and continued for over four days until the evening of March 13. The outbreak produced 99 confirmed tornadoes, which killed a total of 10 people. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) issued multiple elavated outlook throughout the sequence, including a rare high risk for March 12, which would end up being the most intense day of the outbreak, producing 62 in total. 11 F3 tornadoes were tallied, and a violent F4 tornado touched down in Monroe County, Missouri, becoming the strongest of the outbreak. Multiple tornado emergencies were issued for tornadoes throughout the outbreak as well. An intense F3 tornado that affected the towns of Renick and Maddison in Missouri killed 4 people and injured dozens others, becoming the deadliest of the sequence. Multiple of the tornadoes were long-tracked in nature, with 6 of them having paths exceeding 30 miles (48 km). One particular supercell thunderstorm during the outbreak persisted for many hours and progressed in excess of 800 miles (1,300 km) through Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, and extreme southern Michigan.

The 1998 Comfrey–St. Peter tornado outbreak was an unseasonably-strong tornado outbreak which affected the Upper Midwest region of the United States on March 29, 1998. A strong area of low pressure combined with a warm front and favorable upper-level dynamics to produce 16 tornadoes across the region—14 in Minnesota and two in Wisconsin. Thirteen of the tornadoes in Minnesota were spawned by a single supercell thunderstorm. This supercell remained intact for approximately 150 miles (240 km) as it moved across the southern part of the state during the late-afternoon hours.

The tornado outbreak of February 28 – March 2, 2007 was a deadly tornado outbreak across the southern United States that began in Kansas on February 28, 2007. Twenty deaths were reported; one in Missouri, nine in Georgia, and 10 in Alabama. The tornado outbreak of March 28–31, 2007, also known as the Late-March 2007 tornado outbreak, was a tornado outbreak that took place across the central United States. It developed in the High Plains from South Dakota to central Texas on March 28, 2007, which produced most of the tornadoes. Several more tornadoes were reported the next three days before the system weakened on March 31. It affected western Nebraska, western Kansas, extreme eastern Colorado, and much of Oklahoma, and Texas. It was the second major outbreak of 2007, four weeks after an outbreak farther east. The outbreak produced 80 confirmed tornadoes, with five deaths and extensive damage being reported. An extended period of tornado activity that occurred between April 20–27, 2007. The outbreak sequence is best known for producing a deadly pair of tornadoes that struck the border cities of Piedras Negras, Coahuila, and Eagle Pass, Texas, along the United States-Mexican border on April 24, 2007, killing ten people. Other strong tornadoes also caused damage and injuries in or near the towns of Moorefield, Nebraska, Gothenburg, Nebraska, Cactus, Texas, and Tulia, Texas. In all, 93 tornadoes were confirmed causing 10 fatalities and injuring at least 37 others.

The tornado outbreak of October 17–19, 2007 was a widespread tornado outbreak that took place across much of the eastern half of North America starting on October 17, 2007, and continuing into the early hours of October 19. The outbreak was also responsible for five deaths; three in Michigan and two in Missouri, plus many injuries. At least 64 tornadoes were confirmed including 16 on October 17 across six states including Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Missouri with wind damage reported in Oklahoma, Kansas, Illinois, Iowa, Arkansas and Mississippi. On October 18, at least 48 tornadoes were confirmed across eight states including Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan, plus widespread straight line wind damage. Until 2010, this event held the record for largest tornado outbreak ever recorded in the month of October according to NOAA.

On March 21–22, 1952, a severe tornado outbreak generated eleven violent tornadoes across the Southern United States, which is the fourth-largest number of F4–F5 events produced by a single outbreak. Only the 1965 Palm Sunday tornado outbreak, the 1974 Super Outbreak, and the 2011 Super Outbreak surpassed this number. The outbreak caused 209 fatalities–50 of which occurred in a single tornado in Arkansas. The severe weather event also resulted in the fourth-largest number of tornado fatalities within a 24-hour period since 1950.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tornado outbreak sequence of May 2003</span>

From May 3 to May 11, 2003, a prolonged and destructive series of tornado outbreaks affected much of the Great Plains and Eastern United States. Most of the severe activity was concentrated between May 4 and May 10, which saw more tornadoes than any other week-long span in recorded history; 335 tornadoes occurred during this period, concentrated in the Ozarks and central Mississippi River Valley. Additional tornadoes were produced by the same storm systems from May 3 to May 11, producing 363 tornadoes overall, of which 62 were significant. Six of the tornadoes were rated F4, and of these four occurred on May 4, the most prolific day of the tornado outbreak sequence; these were the outbreak's strongest tornadoes. Damage caused by the severe weather and associated flooding amounted to US$4.1 billion, making it the costliest U.S. tornado outbreak of the 2000s.
