Route 3

Tramlink route 4 is a tram route operated as part of the Tramlink network in south London for Transport for London (TfL). The route is the newest on the system, starting operations on 25 June 2012. This route should not be confused with the route 4 which appeared on the destination blinds of the CR4000s when new, which would have operated on the proposed Wimbledon - Sutton extension.

Background

This route serves to ease both routes 1 and 3, as part of this project the section between Mitcham and Beddington Lane has been double tracked, except the approaches into Mitcham Junction station from both directions. Tramlink have also built a second tram stop at Wimbledon.

Mitcham tram stop

Mitcham tram stop is a Tramlink stop in Mitcham in the London Borough of Merton. The stop is located between Belgrave Walk and Mitcham Junction. It was formerly Mitcham railway station, which closed in 1997. The tram stop consists of twin platforms accessible by ramps at either end.

Beddington Lane tram stop

Beddington Lane tram stop is a stop on the Croydon Tramlink tramway. There was previously a railway station on this site, on the single track line from Wimbledon to Croydon, which closed in 1997 in order for it to be converted for Tramlink use. The stop is accessible from the east from Beddington Lane, and also from the pathway leading to the west and south. In late 2014, the track immediately to the west of the tram stop was doubled, though further west the bridge carrying trams over the main line at Mitcham Junction station is still single-track.

Mitcham Junction station

Mitcham Junction is a National Rail station served by Southern and Thameslink trains, and a Tramlink stop. It is in the London Borough of Merton and is in Travelcard Zone 4.

Six new Stadler Variobahn trams were ordered to enable Tramlink to run this route. All of these have now been delivered, and have all entered service. They will be used over the whole system, and not just on route 4.

Stadler Rail AG, also known as Stadler Rail Group, is a Swiss manufacturer of railway rolling stock, with an emphasis on regional train multiple units and trams. Stadler is headquartered in Bussnang, Switzerland.

Variobahn tram

The Variobahn, formerly known as the Variotram, is a German-designed model of articulated low-floor tram and light rail vehicle. Since its introduction in 1993, the Variobahn has been manufactured variously by ABB, Adtranz, Bombardier Transportation, and since 2001 by Stadler Rail. As of 2009, 254 trams have been ordered, with an additional 110 on option. A unit costs about €2.5 million.

On Monday 4 April 2016, route 4 was extended from Therapia Lane to Wimbledon. [1]

The stop is located on the site of the former Woodside railway station of the Woodside and South Croydon Railway; the old station buildings survive, though not used by Tramlink.

Sutton Loop Line

The Sutton Loop Line, also known as the Wimbledon Loop, is part of Thameslink and is the circular route formed where the St Helier line diverges from the Portsmouth Line at Streatham South junction and rejoins it near Sutton station. Trains leave southwards from Streatham to enter the loop and then return going northwards. The short section between West Sutton station and West junction is known as the "Wall of Death", possibly due to the very steep concrete walls to the cutting on both sides and the sharpness of the curve which resemble the motorcycle ride at a funfair.

2016 Croydon tram derailment November 2016 fatal derailment in south London

On 9 November 2016, a tram operated by Tramlink, a light rail tram system serving Croydon and surrounding areas in South London, England, derailed and overturned on a sharp bend approaching a junction. There were seven fatalities with 62 other people injured; nineteen of them sustained serious injuries. The tram was carrying 69 passengers. It was the first tram incident in the United Kingdom in which passengers were killed since 1959.

The Sutton Link is a planned new Tramlink line or separate bus rapid transit (BRT) in London, between Wimbledon/or Colliers Wood via St Helier to Sutton. It may be owned by London Trams or a separate body, which would be an arm of Transport for London (TfL)
