After a few places allocated to championships, the bulk of places are awarded on the basis of world rankings as at 31 May 2012. After 8 NOCs have qualified 3 athletes for an event, other NOCs are limited to 2 athletes for that event.

Triathlon at the Summer Olympics

Alistair Brownlee British triathlete

Alistair Edward Brownlee, MBE is a British triathlete. He is the only athlete to hold two Olympic titles in the triathlon event, winning gold medals in the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games and the only man to have won Olympic Gold whilst going into the event as favourite for the title. He is also a two-time Triathlon World Champion, a two-time World Team Champion, a four-time European Champion, and the 2014 Commonwealth champion.

The ITU Triathlon World Cup is an annual series of triathlon races staged around the world. The series is organised by the International Triathlon Union (ITU), the world governing body of the sport. Inaugurated in 1991, the world cup began as an attempt to create a regular season under its management in tandem with the ITU Triathlon World Championship race. However, this meant that there was a World Cup champion as well as a world champion. Following the 2008 series the ITU reorganized its top level competitions and created the ITU World Triathlon Series, a series of races that was to be the successor of the World Championship. Meanwhile, the World Cup was relegated to become a second tier series, as a result the number of races in the World Cup were reduced. Since the reformat, points earned in World Cup racing are now applied only to an athletes World Ranking.

Laura Bennett (triathlete) American triathlete

Laura Marie Bennett is an American professional triathlete. She placed fourth in the women's triathlon at the 2008 Summer Olympics. In 2012, she finished 17th at the London Olympic Games. She earned a silver medal at the World Triathlon Championships in 2003 and bronze medals in 2004, 2005, and 2007. She has also raced as a professional at the Half-Ironman distance, placing 5th at the 2009 Ironman 70.3 World Championship.

The Dextro Energy Triathlon – ITU World Championship Series 2011 was a series of six World Championship Triathlon events leading to a Grand Final held in Beijing, China in September 2011. The Series was organised under the auspices of the world governing body of triathlon, the International Triathlon Union (ITU), and was sponsored by Dextro Energy.

Triathlon at the 2016 Summer Olympics

The triathlon competitions at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro took place from 18 to 20 August 2016 at Fort Copacabana. Fifty-five athletes competed in each of the men's and women's events.

The triathlon competitions at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo is planned to feature fifty-five athletes competing in each of the men's and women's events. The 2020 Olympics was postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It will also add the new mixed team relay event.

World Triathlon Series World championship series in the sport of triathlon

The World Triathlon Series is World Triathlon's annual series of triathlon events used to crown an annual world champion. There are multiple rounds of competitions culminating in a Grand Final race. Athletes compete head-to-head for points in these races that will determine the overall ITU world champion. The elite championship races are held over two distances the standard and the sprint distance.

This article details the qualifying phase for triathlon at the 2020 Summer Olympics. The competition at these Games will comprise a total of 110 athletes coming from their respective NOCs; each has been allowed to enter a maximum of three. All athletes must undergo a qualifying process to earn a spot for the Games through the Continental Qualification Events, the World Qualification Event, and then the Olympic Qualification List that began on May 11, 2018 and then concludes two years later on the same date.
