Triple J Like a Version Sessions is a compilation EP by Australian alternative rock band Gang of Youths, released on 12 August 2022. It features the songs performed by the band throughout their three appearances on radio station Triple J's live music segment, Like a Version, from 2015 to 2022.

In 2023, all three of Gang of Youths' covers were featured in the Hottest 100 of Like a Version, with "Blood" at number six, "Why Does It Always Rain On Me?" at number 39, and "All My Friends" at 75. [1]

Performances

2015: "All My Friends"

On 20 March 2015, Gang of Youths made their Like a Version debut, performing "All My Friends" by American rock band LCD Soundsystem. [2] They also played their 2014 original single "Benevolence Riots", featuring Montaigne providing backing vocals. [3] The cover was listed among the 12 best Like a Version covers ever, according to a 2015 article by Tone Deaf. [4] Further, X-Press Mag named it "one of the segment’s best covers of 2014." [5]

2017: "Blood"

On 15 September 2017, they returned to perform "Blood", a track by Townsville folk band the Middle East. Frontman David Le'aupepe claimed the song "had a huge and tremendous impact on our adolescence". [6] They also played "The Deepest Sighs, the Frankest Shadows" from their 2017 album, Go Farther in Lightness . [6]

Their performance of "Blood" was lauded by the public. It polled at number 41 in the Hottest 100 of 2017. [7] On lifestyle magazine Man of Many 's list ranking the best Like a Version covers of all time, Gang of Youths ranks at number 10 for "Blood", and at number four in the best covers from 2017. [8] According to Triple J, "Blood" was the fourth most-viewed Like a Version of 2017. [9]

2022: "Why Does It Always Rain on Me?"

Their most recent appearance on the segment, on 5 August 2022, saw the band perform 1999 single "Why Does It Always Rain on Me?" by Scottish band Travis. Le'aupepe also solely performed "Brothers" from their 2022 album, Angel in Realtime . [10] The cover polled at number 105 in the Hottest 100 of 2022. [11]

In the 2023 Hottest 100 of Like a Version countdown, all three of Gang of Youths' covers were featured. "Blood" polled at number six, with "Why Does It Always Rain On Me?" at number 39 and "All My Friends" at number 75. [1]

Compilation

ABC Music published Triple J Like a Version Sessions on 12 August 2022, the first Like a Version compilation the label released. [12] Previously, none of the band's performances had been available on streaming services.

Sound of Silver was produced by the DFA and recorded during 2006 at Long View Farm in North Brookfield, Massachusetts and DFA Studios in New York, New York. The song recounts the experience of frontman David Le'aupepe on a "week-long bender that precluded sleep and eating" and his subsequent attempt to commit suicide on 3 June 2014. The date, referenced within the lyrics, has since become known by fans as "Magnolia Day".

"Booster Seat" is a song by Australian indie rock band Spacey Jane, released on 7 June 2020 as the sixth and final single to their debut studio album, Sunlight (2020). Angel in Realtime is the third studio album by Australian alternative rock band Gang of Youths, released on 25 February 2022 through Mosy Recordings. Written over the four years following the death of frontman David Le'aupepe's father, the album lyrically focuses on the emotions that arise from mourning, coming to terms with loss, and discovering family identity in the Pacific Islands. It consistently uses vocal and instrumental samples from Indigenous musicians collected by explorer David Fanshawe, marking a significant sonic departure from their previous album, Go Farther in Lightness (2017).

The 2022 Triple J Hottest 100 was announced on 28 January 2023. It was the 30th annual countdown of the most popular songs of the year, as voted for by listeners of Australian radio station triple j. The day before, the Hottest 200 played, counting down songs 200–101. Merchandise sales from the event supported the Australian Conservation Foundation.

The Hottest 100 of Like a Version was announced by Australian youth radio station triple j on 15 July 2023. It was the broadcaster's first countdown compiling covers from their live music segment, Like a Version, which is celebrating its 20th year. Voting opened on 23 May, and closed on 10 July 2023.

The Say Yes to Life Tour was the seventh nationwide concert tour by Australian alternative rock band Gang of Youths, and the second supporting their 2017 studio album, Go Farther in Lightness. Spanning 21 sold-out shows across five major capital cities in Australia, with 14 between Sydney and Melbourne alone, the band broke venue records at both the Enmore Theatre and the Forum. The Say Yes to Life Tour received widespread critical acclaim, and was nominated for the ARIA Award for Best Live Act.
