The Tripteroceratidae is a family of depressed, straight to slightly curved nautiloid cephalopods from the middle and upper Ordovician with generally flattened venters and empty siphuncles with straight to inflated segments included in the Oncocerida (Sweet, 1964).

The Tripteroceratidae appeared almost simultaneously with the Oncoceratidae and Valcouroceratidae early in the Middle Ordovician, and are most likely derived from the Graciloceratidae.

Genera

The Tripteroceratdae includes five known genera, as briefly described.

Tripteroceras, the type genus, named by Hyatt (1884) is characterized by a small, straight or slightly exogastric shell with a broad, depressed triangular cross section. The venter, underneath, is flat, the dorsum, above, broadly rounded with a median ridge or keel and lateral angles acute. (Sweet 1964). The siphuncle is small, ventral, and with segments that are only slightly expanded, and thought to be empty. Tripteroceras is known from North America and possibly Norway.

Allumettoceras, from the Middle and Upper Ordovician of North America and northern Europe, is similar to Tripteroceras except the siphuncle which starts off suborthochoanitic becomes cyrtochoanitic with subspherical segments in the later growth stages. Allumettoceras was named by Foerste in 1926

Hadoceras, named by Strand in 1934, is a tripteroceratid with a broadly arched under side and more highly arched upper, respectively venter and dosum. The siphuncle, located between the center and ventral margin, is cyrtochoanitic; segments are expanded within the chambers and have faint annulosiphonate deposits lining the septal openings. Hadoceras is known from the Upper Ordovician of Norway.

Rasmussenoceras, named by Foerste (1932); a tripteroceratid from the middle and upper Ordovician of North America and Greenland with a broadly lenticular section and sharp lateral angles, in which the ventral siphuncle is suborthochoantitic to orthochoantitic with segments only slightly expanded into the chambers.

Tripterocerina, like Tripteroceras except that the dorsum is fluted as well as keeled. Tripterocerina, named by Foerste (1935) comes from the Upper Ordovician of North America (Wyoming)

The Oncocerida comprise a diverse group of generally small nautiloid cephalopods known from the Middle Ordovician to the Mississippian, in which the connecting rings are thin and siphuncle segments are variably expanded. At present the order consists of some 16 families, a few of which, such as the Oncoceratidae, Brevicoceratidae, and Acleistoceratidae contain a fair number of genera each while others like the Trimeroceratidae and Archiacoceratidae are represented by only two or three.

Slender Oncoceratidae are those in the family Oncoceratidae, which have slender, commonly curved, shells. Some like Oocerina are gently curved, almost straight, and with only slight expansion. Others like Dunleithoceras are strongly curved with a more notable rate of expansion. Inclusion in this somewhat arbitrary category is based on illustrations in the Treatise Part K, 1964.

The Tarphyceratidae are tightly coiled, evolute Tarphycerida with ventral siphuncles. The dorsum is characteristically impressed where the whorl presses against the venter of the previous. The Tarphyceratidae are derived from Bassleroceras or possibly from some member of the Estonioceratidae.

Osbornoceras is a genus of Lower Silurian cyrtoconic nautiloid cephalopods known from Ohio and possibly Manitoba, one of five general currently included in the oncocerid family Karoceratidae.

Jovellania is a genus of extinct prehistoric nautiloids from the order Oncocerida known from the Lower Devonian of Europe. Nautiloids form a broad group of shelled cephalopods that were once diverse and numerous but are now represented by only a handful of species in two genera.

Ulrichoceras is recognised as the basal cyrtogomphoceratid genus, which is the source for the rest of the Cyrtogomphoceratidae as well as for the Westonoceratidae. The Cyrtogomphoceratidae are endogastric, the Westonoceratidae, exogastric.

Actinomorpha is a genus of valcouroceratid, order Oncocerida, from the Middle Ordovician of central North America, named by Rousseau Flower, 1943. The shell is breviconic, short and laterally compressed; the venter more narrowly rounded than the dorsum, having the effect of a modest keel in horizontal orientation. The shell is gibbous adorally, such that the body chamber is widest well behind the aperture. The siphuncle is ventral, which could also be indicative of a horizontal orientation in life, with broad, slightly inflated segments and continuous, radial, actinosiphonate, deposits.

Danoceras is an essentially straight shelled oncocerid named by Troedsson in 1926, and included in the Diestoceratidae. It has been found in the upper, and possibly middle, Ordovician of Europe, (Estonia), Greenland, and Russia,. Named species include Danoceras ravni, type, D. inutile, D. scandinavicum, and D. skalbergensis.

Charactoceras is a tarphycerid genus cephalopod which lived during the Late Ordovician.
