Tulsi Ghimire is a Nepalese film director, screenwriter, film editor, cameraman, actor and lyricist known for his works in Nepali films. [1] [2] Regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers of Nepali cinema, he is known for his romantic and masala films that deal with social issues of Nepali society and portrayal of deep human emotions. He has directed some iconic Nepali films like Kusume Rumal (1985), Lahure (1989), Deuta (1991), Chino, (1991) Dakshina (1994), Balidaan (1997) and Darpan Chaya (2001). The Majority of his films in the 1990s were blockbusters and Kusume Rumal and Darpan Chaya went on to become the highest grossing Nepalese films of all time. [3]
Tulsi Ghimire was born in Sindeybong, Kalimpong, Darjeeling district, India to Nepali parents Dhojman Ghimire and Narbada Ghimire. [1] He has two younger brothers and a sister.
Ghimire studied at the Mani Memorial Primary School in Sindeybong up to second grade, and then from grade 3 to 11 at the Scottish University Mission Institute (SUMI), Kalimpong. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Kalimpong College.
He is married to Bharati Ghimire (Gazmer), who has sung in many of his films. His brother Shrawan Ghimire is a film producer. Tulsi's children, Bhawana Ghimire and Panchami Ghimire, appeared in his Nepali children's film, Swarg Ko Pari.
In addition to being a film director, Tulsi Ghimire has also been a screenwriter, editor, cameraman, actor and lyricist.
Ghimire initially moved to Mumbai from Kalimpong in 1974 to work in the Indian film industry, Bollywood. His mentor and Bollywood editor Kamlakar Karkhanis advised him to make Nepali movies at that time. Ghimire debuted in the Nepali film industry with the Nepali movie Bansuri in 1981 as a director. He made his second movie Kusume Rumal in 1985, based on his own story, which became very successful.
Among his movies, Kusume Rumal , Lahure , Deuta , Chino , Balidaan , Dakshina and Darpan Chhaya are considered superhits. Darpan Chaya is considered to be one of the biggest blockbusters of Nepali cinema. [4] [5]
Although he found lot of success in 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s, he was unable to comeback with another hit. He was unable to find success with films he directed later on in his life, those films include Drishtikon, Mrigatrishna, and Darpan Chhaya 2 which were all considered flop in box office. [6]

Nepali Cinema, also referred to as "Nepali Chalachitra" is the filmmaking industry in Nepal. This includes films in various languages of Nepal, most notably in Nepali language and Maithili. The term Cinemandu is also used, as a portmanteau for films produced in the Nepali language while the Nepalese films produced from Kathmandu and Janakpur in the Maithili language is known as Mithilawood. Both of these film industries are the largest viewing cinema of Nepal and are collectively known as Nepali Cinema.
Udit Narayan Jha is an Indian playback singer whose songs have been featured mainly in Hindi films. He has also sung in various other languages including Telugu, Kannada, Tamil, Bengali, Sindhi, Odia, Bhojpuri, Nepali, Malayalam, Assamese, Bagheli and Maithili. He has won four National Film Awards and five Filmfare Awards with twenty nominations among many others. Darpan Chhaya is a 2001 Nepalese romantic drama film, written and directed by Tulsi Ghimire. The film is produced by Shrawan Ghimire under the banner of Siddhanta Films. The film features an ensemble cast including Dilip Rayamajhi, Uttam Pradhan, and Niruta Singh in the lead roles, alongside Laxmi Giri, Tika Pahari, and Jeetu Nepal. The film's plot concerns a love triangle between two best friends where one of them is blind, fall in love with the same girl and the whole film follows their journey of friendship, love and sacrifice.
Bhuwan K.C. is a Nepalese actor, director, producer, singer, and politician known for his work in Nepali cinema. He is also the current chairman of Film Development Board, he was appointed for this position on 26 July 2022.
Kusume Rumal is a 1985 Nepali romantic film written and directed by Tulsi Ghimire. It was produced by Sumitra Paudel under the banner of Sayapatri Films. The film featured Bhuwan K.C, Tripti Nadakar, Udit Narayan and Neer Shah in lead roles. This was the first film in which singer Udit Narayan acted. It is one of the most loved films in Nepal and was the first Nepali film to celebrate silver jubilee.
Tripti Nadakar is an Indian actress who worked in Nepali cinema. She has performed in more than a dozen Nepali films. Her hit movies were Samjhana, Kusume Rumal, Saino and Lahure. Lahure is a 1989 Nepali film directed by Tulsi Ghimire under the banner of Kanchanjanga films. It starred Shrawan Ghimire, Tripti Nadakar and Tulsi Ghimire. The music of the film was composed by Ranjit Gazmer. Binod Pradhan was the cinematographer. It was mostly shot in India at Namchi, South Sikkim and Darjeeling. The film was the biggest commercial success at the Nepalese box office at the time and celebrated 151 days in theatres.
Deuta is a Nepali film written and directed by Tulsi Ghimire and released in 1991. It starred Rajesh Hamal, Shrawan Ghimire and Srijana Basnet in lead roles. Many consider the performance by Rajesh Hamal was his career best and the movie that made Rajesh Hamal a super star. The film met with extremely positive response from audience for its story, music and performance of Rajesh Hamal but critics criticised its runtime. The movie was a blockbuster hit at the box office. The film was the highest grossing film of the year and one of the highest grossing film of 1990s. The film won Hamal many awards for his performance. The movie remain cult classic and is popular till today esp. Its songs and dialogues of Rajesh Hamal.
'Darpan Chhaya 2' is a 2017 Nepalese drama film with Tulsi Ghimire's direction. It is the sequel to the blockbuster Nepalese film Darpan Chaya written by Tulsi Ghimire and released in 2001. The film stars Pushpal Khadka, Sahara Karki, Shiv Shrestha and Tulsi Ghimire. The film was considered hugely inferior to its predecessor and the film was a massive disaster at the box office.
Laxmi Giri is a Nepalese actress whose career spans more than 35 years. She worked on stage, television and in feature films of Nepali, Newari, Maithili, Tamang and Bhojpuri languages. She appeared in more than 150 feature films, over 600 television programs and nearly 20 advertisements.
Balidaan (Sacrifice) is a 1997 Nepali historical drama film, directed by Tulsi Ghimire, and written by Modanath Prasrit. It was produced by Shyam Sapkota under the banner of Cinema Nepal. The film is set in Panchayat-era Nepal, and depicts a fictionalised version of the contemporary democracy movement. It features Hari Bansha Acharya in the lead role, alongside Anjali Lama, Madan Krishna Shrestha, Shanti Maskey, Keshav Bhattarai, Laxmi Giri and Neer Shah. The film was a critical and commercial success.
Seven years after he made his last film in Nepal, the lone Indian director here is poised to make a comeback with his new movie exploring the psyche of Nepalis and people of Nepali origin scattered all over the world.
