The following is a list of highest-grossing films in Nepal, with gross revenue in Nepali Rupees. The box office figures of the films provided here are the official reports published by the authority for cinema management in Nepal, the Film Development Board. The Board officially introduced the digital box office system in cinema halls across the Kathmandu Valley on July 18, 2018 and about a year later in remaining theaters outside the valley. [1] The box office figures of films released therefore are based on the official reports provided by Central Cinema Management System (CCMS) under the board. Despite a full-fledged box office system around the country in operation, there's still some incongruity in box office figures between distributors and FDB, due to manual ticketing adopted by some theaters despite e-ticketing system in place. [2]
The Nepalese film industry is relatively young. Many early films were produced by the Royal Nepal Film Corporation (est. 1971) for the government, which was more concerned with the country's cultural heritage than commercial success. They gradually built a film industry infrastructure and enabled private productions. Kusume Rumal (1985) held the record of highest-grossing film at the box-office until this was surpassed in 2001 by the musical Darpan Chhaya (these films would contend for the current box office record if figures were adjusted for inflation).
New records were set in 2012 with the critically acclaimed crime thriller Loot, which became the first film ever to gross रू5crore in Nepal. These records were broken by drama-thriller Kohinoor in 2014, which became the first film ever to gross over रू10crore in Nepal, establishing a new benchmark in Nepali Cinema. [3] These figures were surpassed by comedy-drama Chhakka Panja with रू16crore gross in 2016.
In 2022, Kabaddi 4: The Final Match amassed रू21.40crore becoming the first Nepali film to surpass रू20crore in Nepal box office, and second ever after Baahubali 2: The Conclusion who achieved the feat back in 2017. [4] Purna Bahadur Ko Sarangi set new benchmarks in 2024 with an unprecedented business at the Nepal box office history, smashing रू40crore milestone, becoming the first and only film to do so and embarking a new era in Nepali Cinema. This list contains domestic films with gross figures exceeding रू10 crore in Nepal. These are the official figures as published by FDB.
