Tärnaby is a locality situated in Storuman Municipality, Lappland, Västerbotten County, Sweden with 482 inhabitants in 2010. [1]
It is known for its successful skiers, particularly in the "technical" disciplines: Slalom and Giant Slalom: Ingemar Stenmark, Anja Pärson, Bengt Fjällberg, Stig Strand and Jens Byggmark. In winter, Tärnaby is transformed into one of northern Sweden's ski resorts. By summer, the Laponian lakes and mountains provide opportunities for activities such as fishing, canoeing, hiking and mountain biking.[ citation needed ]
18 km further north in the Parish of Tärnaby is the village Hemavan, a ski resort, with an airport and start point of the Kungsleden trail.[ citation needed ]
Tärna is the latest permanently settled parish in Sweden, with the oldest new construction built in 1824 at Lövlund. However, for centuries before that, the Sami had practiced reindeer herding in the area. There are also around 9,000-year-old Stone Age finds in the area around Tärnasjön. [2]
The Swedish Tourist Association's tourist station in Tärnaby was inaugurated on July 14, 1927, by the county governor (Landshövding). [3] In the early 1950s, after World War II, tourism in Tärnaby began to develop, with the construction of several hotels and ski lifts. In the 1960s, hydroelectric power plants were built, flooding farms and agricultural lands, with the landowners being compensated by the municipality for this intrusion. Since 1971, the parish of Tärna has been part of the municipality of Storuman. [4]

Kungsleden is a hiking trail in northern Sweden, approximately 467 kilometres (290 mi) long, between Abisko in the north and Hemavan in the south. The full distance breaks down into 419.3 km of trekking, 18.2 km of lake crossings and a 29.5 km stretch of road, almost all of which hikers cover by bus. It passes through, near the southern end, the Vindelfjällen Nature Reserve, one of the largest protected areas in Europe. In the winter Kungsleden is a ski trail with approximately the same route.

The other airport, Storuman Airport, is closed for traffic since 2010.

Storlien [ˈstuːrˌliːən] is a village and ski resort located in Åre municipality in Jämtland, Sweden, two kilometres from the Swedish-Norwegian border. The primary bases of the settlement are tourism and outdoor life – alpine skiing, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, hunting, fishing and hiking. During the 2000s, retail sales to customers from Norway become important, and most of the tourists in Storlien are Norwegians. The Swedish royal family has a house in Storlien, where they usually celebrate Easter and the New Year. There was also previously a sanitarium. Storlien was formerly the centre of winter activities for Skidfrämjandet, now Friluftsfrämjandet, an organisation that promotes outdoor leisure, and played a major role in developing downhill skiing in Sweden.
Tylösand is an area and former locality situated in Halmstad Municipality, Halland County, Sweden, with 399 inhabitants in 2010. It is located 7 km west of Halmstad, on Tyludden. Tylösand is famous for its 7 km long sand beach, its golf courses and “Hotell Tylösand”, a hotel owned by Roxette star Per Gessle and Björn Nordstrand. In 2015 the locality was removed and is counted as part of Frösakull by Statistics Sweden.

Olof “Olle” Alfred Rimfors was a Swedish ski pioneer, ski instructor, military officer, and sports official. In 1934 he introduced alpine skiing in Sweden together with Sigge Bergman, after studying for a month at the ski school of Hannes Schneider in St. Anton am Arlberg and competing in the FIS Alpine World Championships.
