The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) is a public research university in Catonsville, Maryland named after Baltimore County. It had a fall 2022 enrollment of 13,991 students, 61 undergraduate majors, over 92 graduate programs and the first university research park in Maryland. It is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very High Research Activity".
Retriever Activities Center is a 4,024-seat multi-purpose arena in Catonsville, Maryland. The arena opened in 1973. It was home to the UMBC Retrievers basketball and volleyball teams, which represent the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in NCAA Division I athletics, from its opening until the larger Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena opened on campus in February 2018. It hosted the 2008 America East Conference men's basketball tournament final.
The UMBC Retrievers are the athletic teams that represent the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, located in Catonsville, Maryland, in intercollegiate athletics as a member of the Division I level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), primarily competing in the America East Conference since the 2003–04 academic year. The Retrievers previously competed in the Northeast Conference (NEC) from 1998–99 to 2002–03; and in the Big South Conference from 1992–93 to 1997–98; while they also competed in the Mason–Dixon Conference at the NCAA Division II ranks: the first variation of it from 1972–73 to 1977–78; and the second variation from 1983–84 to 1987–88.
UMBC Stadium is a 4,500-seat stadium on the campus of UMBC in Catonsville, Maryland. The stadium opened in 1976. It is home to the UMBC Retrievers men's and women's lacrosse, field hockey, and track and field programs, as well as an alternate venue for soccer. The stadium has also hosted championships for the Northeast Conference in track and field and conference tournaments for the America East Conference in men's and women's lacrosse, as well as tryouts for US Lacrosse's team to compete in the Under-19 World Lacrosse Championships.

Donald Zimmerman is a television analyst and former American college lacrosse coach. He became a color analyst for ESPN in May 2016 and does both high school and college lacrosse games. Prior to becoming an analyst, he served as the head coach for the UMBC Retrievers at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County for 24 years. Between 1984 and 1987, Zimmerman coached Johns Hopkins to three national championships. Zimmerman was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2017.
The Baseball Factory Field at UMBC was the name of a Alumni Field located on the campus of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in Catonsville, Maryland, United States. Alumni Field is home to the UMBC Retrievers baseball team of the NCAA Division I America East Conference. The field is located adjacent to UMBC Stadium. It has a capacity of 1,000 spectators. Previously known as Alumni Field, the venue was renamed on April 20, 2004, after the university's agreement with player development company Baseball Factory. The field was gone back to being renamed Alumni Field. Prior to the 2004 season, the field underwent a $350,000 renovation which added a new lighting system, playing surface, and warning track. Since 2004, the facility's press box, dugout, and bleachers were upgraded.

The Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery is the main library of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in Catonsville, Maryland. It is located in the center of the campus at the confluence of Academic Row and Walker Avenue. The library features 1 million+ books & bound journals, 1.9 million+ photographs and slides, 30,000+ sound recordings, 800,000+ microform pieces, 1,200+ linear feet of manuscripts/archives, 180,000+ government documents, and 100,000+ slides. In addition to the stacks, the Albin O. Kuhn Library also features the Library Gallery, the UMBC Special Collections, the Retriever Learning Center and Math Lab, Resources Learning Center, a cafe, and administrative offices.
Robert S. Mumma is an American college baseball coach. He served as head coach of the UMBC Retrievers baseball team from 2012 season to 2019.

The 2016–17 UMBC Retrievers men's basketball team represented the University of Maryland, Baltimore County during the 2016–17 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Retrievers, led by first-year head coach Ryan Odom, played their home games at the Retriever Activities Center in Catonsville, Maryland as members of the America East Conference. They finished the season 21–13, 9–7 in America East play to finish in fifth place. They lost in the quarterfinals of the America East tournament to New Hampshire. They were invited to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament where they defeated Fairfield, Saint Francis (PA), and Liberty before losing in the semifinals to Texas A&M–Corpus Christi.

The Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena is a basketball arena, concert and multi-purpose event venue on the campus of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) in Catonsville, Maryland. It is the home of the UMBC Retrievers men's and women's basketball teams as well as the volleyball team and serves as a replacement to the Retriever Activities Center (RAC). It has a capacity of 5,000 seats, approximately 1,000 more than the RAC, and is the campus venue for all commencements and concerts. Construction began in March 2016, with an estimated cost of $67 million. Although the venue was originally supposed to be completed in time for the beginning of the Fall 2017 semester and the start of the 2017–18 athletic season, due to delays it officially opened for the February 3 men's basketball game against Vermont.
The 2017–18 UMBC Retrievers men's basketball team represented the University of Maryland, Baltimore County during the 2017–18 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Retrievers, led by second-year head coach Ryan Odom as members of the America East Conference, started the season playing their home games at the Retriever Activities Center in Catonsville, Maryland, but moved to the new UMBC Event Center during the season. The new arena opened on February 3, 2018. UMBC beat UMass Lowell and Hartford to advance to the championship of the America East tournament where they defeated Vermont. As a result, the Retrievers received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. As the No. 16 seed in the South region, they defeated the No. 1 overall seed Virginia by 20 points, becoming the first 16th-seeded team to beat a No. 1 seed. The win is considered one of the biggest upsets in NCAA Tournament history and sports history depending on seedings or point spreads. The Retrievers lost to Kansas State in the second round.

The Retrievers, led by second-year head coach Jim Ferry, played their home games at the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena in Catonsville, Maryland as members of the America East Conference. They finished the season 18–14, 8–8 in America East play to finish in a three-way tie for fourth place. As the No. 4 seed in the America East tournament, they lost in the quarterfinals to Binghamton.
