Daytona International Speedway is a race track in Daytona Beach, Florida, United States, about 50 mi (80 km) north of Orlando. Since opening in 1959, it has been the home of the Daytona 500, the most prestigious race in NASCAR as well as its season opening event. The venue also hosts the 24 Hours of Daytona, the most prestigious IMSA race and one of the three events that make up the Triple Crown of endurance racing. In addition to NASCAR and IMSA, the track also hosts races of ARCA, AMA Superbike, SCCA, and AMA Supercross. The track features multiple layouts including the primary 2.500 mi (4.023 km) high-speed tri-oval, a 3.560 mi (5.729 km) sports car course, a 2.950 mi (4.748 km) motorcycle course, and a 1,320 ft (400 m) karting and motorcycle flat-track. The track's 180-acre (73 ha) infield includes the 29-acre (12 ha) Lake Lloyd, which has hosted powerboat racing.
The Irwindale Speedway & Event Center is a motorsports facility located in Irwindale, California, United States. It opened on March 27, 1999, under the official name Irwindale Speedway. Toyota purchased the naming rights to the facility in 2008, and from that time until 2011 it was also known as the Toyota Speedway at Irwindale.

The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour (NWMT) is a modified stock car racing series owned and operated by NASCAR in the Modified Division. The Modified Division is NASCAR's oldest division, and is the only open-wheeled division that NASCAR sanctions. NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour events are mainly held in the northeastern United States, but the 2007 and 2008 tours expanded to the Midwest with the addition of a race in Mansfield, Ohio. The tour races primarily on short oval paved tracks, but the NWMT also has made appearances at larger ovals and road courses.

The series began in 1989 as the Southern Modified Auto Racing Teams (S.M.A.R.T.) before NASCAR took over the series in 2005. The Whelen Southern Modified Tour used nearly identical rules as its northeastern-based counterpart the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour.

For first time, the series raced outside of Mexico, with a race in the Phoenix International Raceway. Jorge Goeters returned as reigning champion, and took part in the 2013 UNOH Battle at the Beach. Rodrigo Peralta was the champion of 2013 season and Santiago Tovar was declared the Rookie of the Year.

The season was contested over twenty-two races, beginning with the NextEra Energy Resources 250 at Daytona International Speedway and ending with the Ford EcoBoost 200 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Toyota entered as the reigning Manufacturers' Champion, while Matt Crafton entered as the defending Drivers' Champion, and ended the season with his second consecutive title.

It began with the UNOH Battle at the Beach at Daytona International Speedway on February 18, which did not count towards the championship. The first race for the championship was the Whelen Season Opener 150 at Caraway Speedway on March 9. It ended with the Southern Slam 150 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on October 9. George Brunnhoelzl III entered the season as the defending Drivers' Champion.

The first race for the championship was the Icebreaker 150 presented by Town Fair Tire at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park on April 6. It ended with the Sunoco World Series 150 at Thompson again on October 19. Ryan Preece entered the season as the defending Drivers' Champion. 2012 champion Doug Coby won the 2014 championship after 13 races, 22 points ahead of Preece. Preece won the last race, which meant he went from sixth to second in the championship.

Doug Coby entered the season as the defending Drivers' Champion. 2017 marked the first season of the unification of the Whelen (Northern) Modified Tour and the Whelen Southern Modified Tour. Doug Coby won the championship, six points in front of Timmy Solomito.
