UPMC Events Center is an indoor arena located in the Pittsburgh suburb of Moon, Pennsylvania as a part of Robert Morris University, replacing the old Charles L. Sewall Center. [6] The UPMC Events Center is the new home of the Robert Morris Colonials men's and women's (NCAA) Division I basketball and women's volleyball teams. [7] The UPMC Events Center was originally scheduled to open in January 2019. [8] [1] However, it later opened in May 2019 after the men's basketball team announced all of their 2018–19 games would be played at the North Athletic Complex on campus.

In 2013, a survey was conducted to see if a new sporting and athletic center would be wanted for the university and in 2016, the survey results concluded in an overwhelming favor for the construction of a new sports center.

Bob Dylan and Pierce the Veil are the only acts that have performed at the arena more than once.

Facilities

The UPMC Events Center offers a state-of-the-art freeweight and aerobic exercising rooms used for weightlifting and fitness classes. There are also two more rooms that offer sports such as: yoga and wellness programs for students; as well as space for training recreational sports such as: basketball, volleyball and indoor soccer. [9] [10] This facility is also fitted with locker rooms, private showering areas, office space and private lockers for the three (NCAA) Division I teams: men's and women's basketball and women's volleyball.

The facilities in this sports center are also used as a venue for conventions, public speakers, expos, concerts, and graduation ceremonies. [11]

Sports

On March 21, 2019, it was announced that the first basketball game to be held at the arena would be played between Robert Morris and the Pittsburgh Panthers on November 12. This was the 31st matchup between the two teams, with Pitt having won all 30 previous meetings, all of which had been held at Pitt's Petersen Events Center or Fitzgerald Field House. Pitt won the game 71-57 in front of a sold-out crowd. The arena hosted its first conference championship game on March 10, 2020 when the Colonials defeated the St. Francis Red Flash to win the Northeast Conference title, also played before a sold-out crowd of over 4,000.

The arena is named for philanthropists John Petersen and his wife Gertrude, who donated $10 million for its construction. John Petersen, a Pitt alumnus, is a native of nearby Erie and is the retired president and CEO of Erie Insurance Group. The Petersen Events Center was winner of the 2003 Innovative Architecture & Design Honor Award from Recreation Management magazine.

It was home to the Robert Morris Colonials men's and women's basketball teams as well as the women's volleyball team from 1985 until 2017. The Northeast Conference men's basketball tournament was held there four times. The inaugural game was held on November 30, 1985, when Robert Morris lost to Duquesne 80-65. The building, named for the university's president from 1967 to 1989, replaced the John Jay Center in 1985.

John Kowalski is a former coach of the professional United States soccer clubs Tampa Bay Mutiny, Pittsburgh Riverhounds (NASL) and Pittsburgh Spirit (MISL). He also briefly managed the United States national team in 1991, compiling a 2–0–1 record.

The UPMC Rooney Sports Complex is a multipurpose, multisport training, sports science, and sports medical complex of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Christopher B. Howard is the executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Arizona State University Public Enterprise in Tempe, Arizona, where he started on February 7, 2022. Previously, he served as the 8th president of Robert Morris University in Moon Township, Pennsylvania. He is a former college football running back and former United States Air Force officer.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Robert Morris Colonials</span> College sports teams

The Robert Morris Colonials are the athletic teams for Robert Morris University, in Moon Township, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Pittsburgh. The Colonials compete in NCAA Division I. In 2020, the school joined the Horizon League as a full member after leaving the Northeast Conference (NEC). Several RMU sports that are not sponsored by the Horizon League play in other conferences. Football and men's lacrosse compete in the NEC, men's and women's ice hockey in Atlantic Hockey America, women's lacrosse in the Mid-American Conference, and women's rowing in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The school colors are RMU Blue, RMU Red, and RMU Gray/Silver.

The Robert Morris Colonials men's ice hockey team is a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I college ice hockey program that represents Robert Morris University. The team plays its home games at the Clearview Arena, located at the RMU Island Sports Center in Neville Township, Pennsylvania, United States. The Colonials are members of Atlantic Hockey America, formed shortly after the 2023–24 season by the merger of RMU's former men's league of the Atlantic Hockey Association and the women-only College Hockey America (CHA), in which RMU had been a member. The Colonials men had been members of CHA until its men's division disbanded at the end of the 2009–10 season.

Printscape Arena at Southpointe is a multi-purpose dual arena facility located at exit 48 of Interstate 79 in the Pittsburgh business park of Southpointe in Cecil Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, United States. It served as the practice facility for the Pittsburgh Penguins from opening on May 20, 1995, until 2015.

The Robert Morris Colonials men's basketball team is the basketball team that represents Robert Morris University in Moon Township, Pennsylvania, United States. The school's team currently competes in the Horizon League. The Colonials current head coach is Andrew Toole who is in his fourteenth season at RMU. Toole was hired when, after three years in charge and 73 wins, head coach Mike Rice Jr. left the program in 2010 to take the head coaching job at Rutgers.

The 2017–18 Robert Morris Colonials men's basketball team represented Robert Morris University during the 2017–18 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Colonials, led by eighth-year head coach Andrew Toole, played their home games at the PPG Paints Arena and four games at the Palumbo Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as members of the Northeast Conference. They finished the season 16–17, 9–9 in NEC play to finish in a tie for sixth place. As the No. 7 seed in the NEC tournament, they upset No. 2 seed Mount St. Mary's in the quarterfinals before losing in the semifinals to No. 1 seed Wagner.

The North Athletic Complex is a softball, soccer, and basketball venue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. It is home to the Robert Morris Colonials softball and soccer teams of the NCAA Division I Northeast Conference. The venue has a capacity of 500. In 2018–19, Robert Morris's men's basketball team had to use this as their home arena while the UPMC Events Center was being constructed.

The 2019–20 Duquesne Dukes men's basketball team represented Duquesne University during the 2019–20 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Dukes, led by third-year head coach Keith Dambrot, were members of the Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10). The Dukes finished the season 21–9, 11–7 in A-10 play, to finish in a tie for fifth place. Their season ended when the A-10 tournament and all other postseason tournament were canceled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
