The UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing is a public nursing school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was established in 1884 [1] and is affiliated with UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center) Shadyside Hospital. It is located in the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The school is currently housed at 5900 Baum Blvd in the AAA Motor Square Garden building.
Originally named the Pittsburgh Training School for Nurses, the school was founded in 1884 by three physicians from Pittsburgh Homeopathic Hospital: Dr. James H. McClelland, Dr. Lewis H. Willard and Dr. Charles F. Bingaman. They developed the idea for the school after a meeting with Florence Nightingale three years prior. The school was the first nursing school in Western Pennsylvania. In 1942 the school was renamed to Shadyside School of Nursing, [2] four years after the hospital changed its name to Shadyside Hospital.
In December 2009, the UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing received an endowment of $900,000, the largest donation in the school's history, from 1939 alumnae Jane Pesci. [3]
The UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing offers a diploma in nursing. The school has an 18-month, full-time daylight program and 3-year, part-time evening/weekend program. The school is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) and approved by the State Board of Nursing Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. [4] The school also received the Center of Excellence designation for 2009-2012 by the National League for Nursing. [5]

STAT MedEvac is a service of the Center for Emergency Medicine of Western Pennsylvania in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The primary function of STAT MedEvac is to provide air medical transport and as of July 2017 two ground ambulances for patients with an injury or critical illness. STAT MedEvac is directed by a consortium of hospitals of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) that include UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, UPMC Altoona, UPMC Hamot, UPMC Mercy and UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside. STAT MedEvac's base of operations is in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, at the Allegheny County Airport. With 18 helicopter base sites across Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, Ohio, and the District of Columbia, it is one of the largest single operated and dispatched air-medical transport system in the United States.

Lothrop Hall is a major student dormitory at the University of Pittsburgh's main campus in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Lothrop Hall is located adjacent to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) on Lothrop Street near Fifth Avenue, this hill is often referred to as "cardiac hill" due to its steep grade and its accessibility to medical care. The Hall is made up of 14 floors, some of which are segregated by sex in each wing. Most rooms in the hall are single occupancy, with some double occupancy as well, and even some tripled on floors 2-10. The dorm houses 723 people, in addition to a resident director and 15 resident assistants.

The only NCI-designated cancer center in Western Pennsylvania, Hillman is composed of collaborative academic and research efforts between the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), and Carnegie Mellon University. Hillman provides clinical cancer care to some 74,000 patients treated at its facilities at both the flagship Hillman Cancer Center location in the Shadyside neighborhood of Pittsburgh and at dozens of UPMC-affiliated sites throughout Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio, and a growing list of overseas locations. UPMC Altoona, located in downtown Altoona, Pennsylvania, is a 380-bed, non-profit, private community hospital system that contains more than 20 affiliated health care companies and functions as the regional referral center and tertiary hub of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). Founded in 1883 as to serve the needs of the area and the Pennsylvania Railroad, the hospital was known for most of its history simply as Altoona Hospital. It became part of the Altoona Regional Health System which was created in 2004 by the merger of Altoona Hospital with Bon Secours-Holy Family Hospital, previously Mercy Hospital of Altoona. Today as part of UPMC, it is an Adult Level II trauma center for a 20 county region in central Pennsylvania and is served by 300 physicians and 4,000 care givers that help it to provide a variety of medical services and specialties.
UPMC Presbyterian is a 900-bed non-profit, research and academic hospital located in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, providing tertiary care for the Western Pennsylvania region and beyond. It comprises the Presbyterian campus of the combined UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside hospital entity. The medical center is a part of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center health system and is the flagship hospital of the system. UPMC Presbyterian also features a state verified Level 1 Trauma Center, 1 of 3 in Pittsburgh. Although UPMC Presbyterian has no pediatric services, Presby has the equipment to stabilize and transfer pediatric emergency cases to the nearby UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.

The hospital is planned to be adjacent and attached to UPMC Presbyterian, and will be a member of the health network, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. The hospital is designed to highlight the world-famous transplant program at UPMC, made famous by pioneer, Dr. Thomas Starzl. UPMC Heart and Transplant Hospital will the region's largest hospital dedicated to one specialty. As the hospital is slated to be a teaching hospital, it will be affiliated with University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

The hospital is near UPMC's flagship campus which houses Presbyterian and Montefiore. As the hospital is a teaching hospital, it is affiliated with University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. The hospital has an emergency room to handle emergencies, with a rooftop helipad to transport critical patients to and from the hospital. UPMC Shadyside houses the flagship campus of the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, a nationally ranked cancer hospital.
