USS Impetuous (PYc-46) was a private yacht purchased by the Navy in August 1940 that served as a patrol boat of the United States Navy in Central America. The yacht was built as Paragon, the first of at least two Davol yachts to bear the name, in 1915 for Charles J. Davol of Providence, Rhode Island. In 1916 Davol sold the yacht to John Fred Betz, 3d of Philadelphia who renamed the yacht Sybilla III which served as the Section Patrol yacht USS Sybilla III (SP-104) from May 1917 to December 1918. Sybilla III remained in Betz's ownership until sale in 1935 to R. Livingston Sullivan of Philadelphia who renamed the yacht Arlis. On 12 August 1940 the Navy purchased the yacht placing it in commission as USS PC-454 on 16 October. The vessel was given the name Impetuous and reclassified PYc-46 on 15 July 1943. The yacht was decommissioned at Philadelphia 31 August 1944 and transferred to the War Shipping Administration for sale.
Paragon was built for Charles J. Davol of Providence, Rhode Island in 1915 by Robert Jacob Inc., City Island, New York City. The yacht was designed by Swasey, Raymond & Page, Boston, somewhat along the lines of the U.S. Navy torpedo destroyers. [2] [3] [4] [5] [note 3] Davol was president and treasurer of the Davol Rubber Company. He maintained moorings for his yachts near his 1,000 acres (404.7 ha) North Kingstown, Rhode Island estate "Wildacres" which composed most of Quonset Point. He was a member of seven yacht clubs. [6] [7] [note 4]
The yacht had two 200 horsepower six cylinder gasoline engines with 9 in (22.9 cm) bore and 14 in (35.6 cm) stroke. In keeping with its naval look there was a polished and enameled functional quick firing gun mounted aft. [2] Paragon was registered "during the week ending April 24, 1915" as a gas powered yacht at Providence, R. I. with U.S. Official Number 213128, signal LFJB, 103 GRT, 70 NRT, registry length of 115.1 ft (35.1 m), 14.2 ft (4.3 m) beam and depth of 8.2 ft (2.5 m). [8] [9] Additional dimensions are listed in Lloyd's Register of American Yachts 1917 for the yacht after sale and rename as length overall 120 ft (36.6 m), length on waterline 118 ft 6 in (36.1 m), extreme breadth 14 ft 4 in (4.4 m), depth 8 ft 3 in (2.5 m) and draft of 5 ft (1.5 m). By December 1916 [note 5] the yacht had been sold to John Fred Betz, 3d who owned a slightly smaller, 100 ft (30.5 m), yacht named Sybilla II. Paragon was renamed by Betz Sybilla III registered in Philadelphia. [3] [5] [10] [note 6] The sale had been negotiated by the naval architectural firm Gielow & Orr during a period in which the government was buying yachts for potential wartime use and gentlemen yachtsmen were buying suitable yachts to enroll in the Naval Coast Defense Reserve or turn yachts over to the Naval Coast Patrol on the "free rental" of $1 per month. [11]
Sybilla III was acquired 14 May 1917 under free lease from Betz and commissioned the same day as USS Sybilla III (SP-104) for service in the Section Patrol. [1] [12] The yacht served in the Fourth Naval District for a rental of $1 per month plus cost of restoration after use. [13] On 24 December 1918 the yacht was returned to Betz and name struck from the Naval Vessel Register (NVR). [12]
In the 1932-33 register Sybilla III is shown with a new signal, KNMU, and diesel engines. [14] In the 1935-36 register the vessel is shown as Arlis owned by R. Livingston Sullivan of Philadelphia. [15]
The Navy acquired Arlis from Sullivan for $70,000 on 12 August 1940, converted the yacht at a cost of $50,000 and commissioned the vessel USS PC-454 on 16 October with assignment to the 15th Naval District. [16] [17] PC-454 arrived in the Canal Zone in mid-November 1940 to patrol the approaches to the Panama Canal. From November 1940 to August 1944 she performed escort and antisubmarine patrol operations off Central America. [17] The patrol vessel was named and reclassified Impetuous (PYc-46) on 15 July 1943. On 31 August 1944, the patrol yacht arrived in Philadelphia and was decommissioned there on 27 September, struck from the Naval Register on 14 October and sold by the War Shipping Administration on 14 June 1945. USS Onyx (PYc-5), was a diesel coastal patrol yacht of the United States Navy during World War II.
USS Winchester (SP-156) was an armed yacht that served in the United States Navy as a patrol vessel from 1917 to 1919. Prior to and following World War I, Winchester was a private yacht, later renamed Renard. In World War II, Renard was requisitioned for use in the Royal Canadian Navy as a patrol vessel, keeping her name. She was returned to her owners in 1944.
USS Nokomis (SP-609) was a yacht purchased by the U.S. Navy during World War I. The yacht was purchased from Horace E. Dodge of Detroit, Michigan, after he had the yacht luxuriously fitted out but before he could make use of his second Nokomis — the first having already gone into service.
USS Felicia (SP-642) was a yacht acquired by the United States Navy during World War I. She was outfitted and armed by the Navy as a patrol craft, and was assigned to patrol the New England waters. Her task of protecting ships from German submarines was interrupted by her collision with a submarine. Post-war she was reconfigured to her civilian condition, and was sold in 1919.
Idealia was America's first diesel powered yacht built and owned by the Electric Launch Company (ELCO). The yacht was built in 1911, launched in 1912 and demonstrated the potential for use of diesel engines in yachts for several years thereafter. She yacht performed a public trial on the Hudson River on 22 October 1913 under the supervision of ELCO's manager Henry R. Sutphen with a gathering of naval architects and engineers as observers. Idealia was sold to individual owners after its period of demonstrating the diesel engine's pleasure craft utility.
USS California (SP-249) was a yacht acquired by the United States Navy during World War I and outfitted as an armed section patrol vessel patrolling New York waterways. Later, renamed the original name of Hauoli, it was assigned to Thomas A. Edison conducting underwater listening experiments related to antisubmarine warfare.
USS Druid (SP-321) was a private yacht launched 10 February 1902 as Rheclair that was built for Daniel G. Reid. Reid sold the yacht to Senator Nelson W. Aldrich who renamed the yacht Nirvana only just over a year before his death. Aldrich's estate chartered Nirvana to John Wanamaker until it was bought by his son Rodman Wanamaker who used the yacht for cruising until a fire on 14 December 1916, just before a cruise south, severely damaged the vessel. He chartered an alternate vessel for his trip south and, after full repairs, the yacht was sold to Walter W. Dwyer who gave it the name Druid with intentions to sell the yacht to the government in order to finance a shipyard venture in Pensacola, Florida.
The second USS Tacony (SP-5) was an armed yacht that served in the United States Navy as a Section patrol vessel from 24 May 1917 to 29 November 1918. The yacht had been built in 1911 by the Mathis Yacht Building Company at Camden, New Jersey for John Fred Betz, III, of Essington, Pennsylvania and member of the Philadelphia Yacht Club as Sybilla II. The vessel was Mathis yard number seven with 208469 the official number issued.
The first USS Manatee (SP-51) was an armed motorboat that served as a United States Navy patrol vessel from 1917 until sometime shortly after World War I.
USS Coco (SP-110) was an armed motorboat that served in the United States Navy as a Section patrol vessel from 1917 to 1919.
USS Apache (SP-729) was the first to be delivered of eight motor boats built by Herreshoff Manufacturing Company at Bristol, Rhode Island ordered and financed by members of the Eastern Yacht Club of Marblehead, Massachusetts. The boats were designed by Albert Loring Swasey and Nathanael Greene Herreshoff with the intention that the boats be used by the Navy as patrol craft and built with Navy approval of the design. Apache, as were the other boats, bore names under construction chosen by the owners and were then given the Section Patrol numbers on Navy acceptance and activation. The names were dropped after a period and all the boats then bore only the S.P. numbers.
USS Owera (SP-167), was an armed yacht that served in the United States Navy as a patrol vessel from 1917 to 1919. The vessel, under the name O-We-Ra, was built as a steam yacht in Leith, Scotland in 1907 for Frederick H. Stevens of Buffalo, New York. In 1915 the yacht was sold to United States Senator Peter G. Gerry of Rhode Island and registered in Providence, Rhode Island as Owera.
The first USS Sabalo (SP-225) was a United States Navy patrol vessel in commission from 1917 to 1919. Following World War I, Sabalo was sold to private interests before returning to service as a patrol vessel in World War II, this time with the Royal Canadian Navy, renamed Cougar. Returning to private ownership following the war, the vessel sank in a hurricane in 1950.
USS Kajeruna (SP-389) was a patrol vessel that served in the United States Navy from 1917 to 1919. The vessel had been built in 1902 as Hauoli for mining magnate Francis Marion "Borax" Smith but was replaced in 1903 by a second, larger vessel he named Hauoli. The first yacht was then named Seminole and for a time was returned to the builder, John N. Robins, and advertised for sale by the designer's firm. In 1911 Clinton W. Kinsella of New York purchased the yacht, apparently already renamed Kajeruna. After naval service the yacht was returned to the owner. On 31 March 1920 the ship was sold to British interests and renamed Tomas W. Beattie.
USS Marold (SP-737) was a United States Navy patrol vessel in commission from 1917 to 1919.
Charmian II was an express cruiser owned by C. Huges Manly of Baltimore built in Annapolis, Maryland by Chance Marine Construction Company and in September 1915 thought by boating observers after trials to be perhaps the fastest cruiser in her class in the United States. The 59 ft (18.0 m) cruiser was the largest V-bottom cruiser at the time. Manly was a member of both the Baltimore Yacht Club and Maryland Motor Boat Club with Charmian II a part of both fleets.
USS Marpessa (SP-787) was a 50 foot "express yacht" that became a United States Navy section patrol vessel in commission from 1917 to 1919 retaining the civilian name.
Rosinco was a diesel-powered luxury yacht that sank in Lake Michigan off the coast of Kenosha, Wisconsin in 1928. The yacht was built in 1916 as Georgiana III and served during World War I as USS Georgiana III, a Section patrol craft, under a free lease to the Navy by her owner and commanding officer. After the war the yacht was sold and renamed Whitemarsh in 1918. In 1925, after sale to Robert Hosmer Morse of Fairbanks-Morse, the yacht became Rosinco. She was sunk following a collision in 1928 and the wreck was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.
USS Helianthus (SP-585) was a patrol vessel in commission in the United States Navy from 1917 to 1919, seeing service in World War I. After her U.S. Navy service, she was in commission in the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey as the survey launch USC&GS Helianthus from 1919 to 1939. She was named after the Helianthus, the genus to which the sunflower belongs.
USFC Phalarope was an American fish culture and fisheries science research vessel that operated along the coast of New England. She was part of the fleet of the United States Commission on Fish and Fisheries, generally referred to as the United States Fish Commission, from 1900 to 1903 and in the fleet of its successor, the United States Bureau of Fisheries, as USFS Phalarope from 1903 until 1917 and again from 1919 until fiscal year 1933. She was in commission in the United States Navy as the patrol vessel USS Phalarope from 1917 to 1919, seeing service during World War I. Before her United States Government service, she was the steam yacht Adelita.
