USS Zeelandia was an ocean liner that was built in Scotland in 1910 and scrapped in the Netherlands in 1936. She was the largest ship in the Koninklijke Hollandsche Lloyd (KHL) fleet from 1910 until the liners Gelria and Tubantia were completed in 1913 and 1914. She was USS Zeelandia from April 1918 until October 1919, when she was a United States Navy troopship.
In 1909 KHL took delivery of two new twin-screw sister ships for its route between the Netherlands and the Río de la Plata. Hollandia was built by Alexander Stephen and Sons in Glasgow, [1] and Frisia was built by Koninklijke Maatschappij 'De Schelde' in Vlissingen. [2] Each had a registered length of about 420 ft (130 m) and tonnage of more than 7,000 GRT. In 1910 Alexander Stephen & Sons built one ship to a slightly enlarged version of the design, which was launched as Zeelandia. [3]
Zeelandia was built as yard number 436, launched on 26 April 1910, [3] and completed that June. Her registered length was 440.0 ft (134.1 m), her beam was 55.7 ft (17.0 m) and her depth was 34.0 ft (10.4 m). [4] Her tonnages were 7,995 GRT, 4,960 NRT and 7,420 DWT. She had berths for 1,064 passengers: 102 first class, 108 2nd class, and 854 steerage. Her holds had capacity for 282,000 cu ft (8,000 m3) of grain or 267,000 cu ft (7,600 m3) of baled cargo. [5]
The ship had twin screws, each driven by a three-cylinder triple-expansion steam engine. The combined power of her twin engines was rated at 953 NHP [4] or 5,800 ihp, and gave her a speed of 14 knots (26 km/h). [5]
KHL registered Zeelandia at Amsterdam. Her code letters were QDBC. By 1911 she was equipped for submarine signalling and wireless telegraphy. [4] By 1913 her call sign was MKZ, [6] but by 1914 it had been changed to PBI. [7]
As part of the Allied blockade of the Central Powers in the First World War, the Royal Navy used to stop and search ships passing in and out of neutral states such as the Netherlands that neighboured Germany. In October 1916 the Royal Navy searched Zeelandia and the KNSM steamship Nickerie , and seized all the mail they were carrying. [8]
In November 1916 Mata Hari sailed on Zeelandia from Spain to Falmouth, where British police arrested her. [9]
On 20 March 1917 President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the seizure by angary of Dutch merchant ships in US ports. Three days later the Third Naval District inspected Zeelandia and recommended her conversion into a troopship. On 3 April 1918 she was commissioned into the US Navy as USS Zeelandia, with the ID number ID–2507. Commander Robert Henderson was her first commander. She was defensively armed with four 6-inch (150 mm) guns, two 1-pounder guns, and two machine guns [10]
The US Navy assigned Zeelandia to the Newport News Division of the Cruiser and Transport Force. Between her commissioning and the Armistice of 11 November 1918 she made five transatlantic round trips between the US and Europe, in which she carried 8,349 passengers, nost of them troops. She claimed to have sighted and engaged several German U-boats in that time. However, the only verified engagement was on 31 August 1918, when a U-boat surfaced to try to attack a convoy in which Zeelandia was sailing. The convoy's zig-zag course, and the strength of its escort, prevented the U-boat from pressing home its attack. [10]
After the Armistice, Zeelandia made another seven transatlantic round trips. She repatriated a total if 15,737 troops to the US, and took 3,170 passengers to Europe. On 31 July 1919 she was transferred to the Commandant of the Third Naval District for disposal. On 6 October she was decommissioned, stricken from the Navy list, and returned to her owner. [10]
Zeelandia was refitted at Glasgow for her return to service as a civilian ocean liner. She returned to Amsterdam in July 1920. [5]
By 1930 Zeelandia was equipped with wireless direction finding. [11] By 1934 the four-letter call sign PIXB had replaced her code letters and three-letter call sign. [12]
From February 1935 Zeelandia was laid up at Amsterdam. In April 1936 she was sold for scrap for 123,356 guilders to Frank Rijsdijk's Industrieële Ondernemingen. On 8 May 1936 the tugboat Witte Zee towed her to Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht to be broken up. [5]
SS Georgia was an oil tanker that was built in the United States in 1908 as Texas and spent most of her career in the United States Merchant Marine. In 1917 she was renamed Georgia. In 1927 she was transferred to Dutch ownership, and shortly thereafter ran aground and was lost on Haisborough Sands off the coast of Norfolk, England.
SS Dwinsk was a transatlantic ocean liner that was launched in Ireland in 1897 as Rotterdam, renamed C. F. Tietgen in 1906, and renamed Dwinsk in 1913. A U-boat sank her in 1918, with the loss of 23 lives. The ship was built for Holland America Line, but was successively owned by Scandinavian America Line and Russian American Line, and after the Russian Revolution she was managed by Cunard Line.
SS Potsdam was a steam ocean liner that was launched in Germany in 1899 for Holland America Line. In 1915 Swedish American Line acquired her and renamed her Stockholm.
SS Noordam was a steam ocean liner that was launched in Ireland in 1901 and scrapped in the Netherlands in 1928–29. Holland America Line owned her throughout her career. From 1923 to 1924 Swedish American Line chartered her and renamed her Kungsholm.
USS Bali was a Dutch cargo steamship that was built for Stoomvaart Mattschappij Nederland in 1917. She served in the United States Navy, with the ID number ID–2483, from March 1918 until May 1919. She supplied the American Expeditionary Forces in France, and in 1919 she took food relief to Europe.
SS Statendam was a transatlantic ocean liner that was launched in Ireland in 1898 for Holland America Line. She was the first of several ships in the company's history to be called Statendam. She was NASM's first ship of more than 10,000 GRT, and she was the largest ship in the company's fleet until Potsdam was completed in 1900.
USS Charlton Hall (ID-1359) was a cargo steamship that was built in Scotland in 1907 and served in the merchant fleets of the United Kingdom, United States and Greece. She served in the United States Navy in 1918. She was renamed Atlantis and then Anastasis in 1930. She was scrapped in China in 1934.
USS Craster Hall (ID-1486) was a cargo steamship that was built in Scotland in 1909 and served in the merchant fleets of first the United Kingdom and then the United States. In 1918–19 she served in the United States Navy. In 1927 she was damaged in a collision off the coast of Peru, was beached to prevent her sinking, but was wrecked.
USS Santa Rosalia (ID-1503) was a cargo steamship that was built in Scotland in 1910 and served in the merchant fleets of the United Kingdom, United States and Greece. She served in the United States Navy in 1918–19. She was renamed Stefanos Costomenis in 1929 and sank in the North Atlantic in 1936.
USS Rondo (ID-2488) was a Dutch cargo steamship that was built for Stoomvaart Mattschappij Nederland in 1914. She served in the United States Navy from March 1918 until June 1919. She was scrapped in 1933.
USS Oosterdijk was a Holland America Line cargo steamship that was built in 1913 and sank as a result of a collision in 1918. She served in the United States Navy, with the Naval Registry Identification Number ID–2586, from March 1918 until her loss that July. Some sources anglicise her name as Oosterdyk, but Lloyd's Register registered her with the Dutch spelling Oosterdijk.
SS Polar Chief was a merchant steamship that was built in England in 1897 and scrapped in Scotland in 1952. In its 55-year career it had previously been called Montcalm, RFA Crenella, Crenella, Rey Alfonso, Anglo-Norse and Empire Chief. Early in the First World War it spent eight months pretending to be the battleship HMS Audacious.
SS Binnendijk was a Holland America Line (NASM) cargo steamship. She was one of NASM's "B" class ships: the company's first cargo ships to be powered by steam turbines. Binnendijk was built in South Holland in 1921, and sunk by a mine in the English Channel in 1939. She was the first ship that NASM lost in the Second World War. Her wreck off the coast of Dorset, England is now a wreck diving site, nicknamed "The Benny".
SS Ophir was a Dutch steamship that was built in 1904. She carried passengers, cargo and mail between Rotterdam and the Dutch East Indies until March 1918, when the United States seized her under angary and she became USS Ophir (ID-2800). In November 1918 a fire and explosion damaged her beyond economic repair. She was scrapped in 1922.
USS St. Francis (ID-1557) was a cargo steamship. She was built in Ireland in 1914 as San Francisco, and renamed St. Francis in 1918 when she was commissioned into the United States Navy. In 1933 she was renamed Lammot du Pont. In 1942 she was sunk by a U-boat, and 19 of her crew were lost.
SS Koningin der Nederlanden was a Dutch passenger steamship. She was built in 1911 for Stoomvaart Maatschappij Nederland, which ran scheduled passenger and mail services between Amsterdam and Java.
SS Aquileia was a Dutch-built steamship that was launched in 1913 as the ocean liner and mail ship Prins der Nederlanden for Netherland Line. She ran scheduled services between Amsterdam and the Dutch East Indies until 1930, when she was laid up.
SS Goentoer was a Dutch passenger and mail ship that was built for Rotterdamsche Lloyd in 1902 and scrapped in 1925. Her regular route was between Rotterdam and the Dutch East Indies. She was a UK troop ship from 1918 to 1919, after being seized under angary in Singapore.
SS Westerdijk was a Holland America Line cargo steamship that was completed in 1913 and scrapped in 1933. She served in the United States Navy, with the Naval Registry Identification Number ID–2514, from March 1918 until September 1919. Some sources anglicise her name as Westerdyk, but Lloyd's Register registered her with the Dutch spelling Westerdijk.
SS Har Zion was a passenger and cargo steamship that was built in Denmark in 1907 as St. Jan for Det Østasiatiske Kompagni. In 1913 Koninklijke Nederlandse Stoomboot-Maatschappij bought her and renamed her Nickerie. In 1933 Ignazio Messina & Co bought her and renamed her Risveglio. In 1935 Palestine Maritime Lloyd bought her and renamed her Har Zion.
