Ughelli is a town in Delta State, Nigeria, and one of the 24 kingdoms that make up the Urhobo Nation. It also serves as the headquarters of Ughelli North local government area of Delta State. [1] The city is indigenous to the Urhobo ethnic nationals, but there is a mixture of several other tribes from the country & abroad. It is an industrial and agricultural spot of Delta State.

Ughelli is in a central location in Delta State and a major town for the Urhobo Tribe, also one of the oldest kingdom in Delta State tracing back to the 14th and 15th century. The city of Ughelli is ruled by a hereditary ruler known as Ovie. The king, Oharisi III, lives in the Ovie Palace situated at Otovwodo-Ughelli.

History

Ughelli oral tradition has it that the great ancestor and founding father of Ughelli ("Ughene"), is the second son of Oghwoghwa (a Prince from Benin Kingdom). As history has it, Oghwoghwa in search of his own kingdom first settlement was at Tarakiri and later left for Oviri Ogor (current site of Ogor Techinal College). Ughene later left Oviri Ogor and founded Ovwodoawanre (Old Settlement), before the present settlement headquarters at Otovwodo (traditional headquarters).

Ughelli has several schools, a general hospital, and a local government secretariat. The city is a link between Delta North and Delta South. The city has crude oil and gas reserves hence the presence of Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC).

Ughelli town is the administrative headquarters of Ughelli North Local Government Area. [2]

Organization

Ughelli is organized as a local government area (LGA) [3] with a Chairman elected by the people and Councilors representing wards. It has various departments overseeing functions such as finance, health, education, agriculture, and works, headed by departmental heads. Traditional institutions, including traditional rulers and chiefs, also play a role in local governance. Committees may be formed to handle specific tasks. Ughelli's organization is governed by the Nigerian constitution and local government laws, following a multi-tiered system of government with federal, state, and local levels of administration. [4]

Ughelli's latitude and longitude coordinates are: 5.500187, 5.993834. [5] It is a town in Southern Nigeria and the oldest kingdom of the 24 kingdoms of the Urhobo people.[ citation needed ]Ughelli is located in close proximity to the floodplains of the West Niger Delta river, [3] and is surrounded by neighbouring communities and villages. Among these are Agbara-Otor, Agbaro, Ufuoma, Otokutu, Ogor, each contributing to the town's rich cultural tapestry. [4]

The Abraka beach is famous for its natural flowing spring water, and has sports recreational facilities for outdoor activities like canoeing, fishing, swimming, barbecue and picnicking.

The Orhuwhorun people

The Kabo tribe of the Izon people lives in the vicinity of Patani in Delta State, Nigeria. The tribe gets its name from its founder, Kabo, and from Kabobolou Creek. Two Kabo towns are located along the creek. Other Kabo settlements include: Patani, Elemebiri (Ofonibeingha), Asamabiri, and Ekperiwari.

Ughelli South is a Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria. It is made up of six Urhobo kingdoms namely: Ughievwen,Otor, Eghwu Arhavwarien, Effurun, Okparabe and Olomu. Otu Jeremi is the headquarters of Ughelli South LGA. It is the fourth most populated local government in Delta State.

The Agbon Kingdom is one of twenty-four subunits of the Urhobo people that have been in existence since before the rise of the Benin Empire in the 1440s and before the arrival of the Portuguese in the Western Niger Delta in the 1480s.

Irri is located in the Isoko South local government area of Delta state, Nigeria. It is one of the petroleum producing communities in Nigeria. It is bordered by Uzere, Aviara, Oyede, Idheze and Oleh. Descendants of Irri migrated to form other small villages and towns, such like Ada, Idheze, Ikpide, Ivrogbo, Iwreogboko, Canaan Irri, Ivori, Uro Irri, etc, and they are usually referred to as children of Irri Kingdom. The people are referred to as Emo Irri, which means children of Irri.

Chamberlain Oyibocha Orovwuje, Ogurimerime I, was the Ovie of Agbon Kingdom from 1958 till 2012. He was also the former chairman of Delta State Council of Traditional Rulers. He ruled the traditional kingdom of Agbon for 54 years and clinched the title of the longest reigning monarch in Delta State.

The Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate (NDGJM) is a militant group operating in Nigeria's Niger Delta region. The group was founded on August 2, 2016 in Delta State and is composed mainly of ethnic Urhobos, and a fairly large number of members belonging to the Isoko ethnic group.

Luke Erede Ejohwomu, Adakaji is the Ovie of Abraka Kingdom hails from Ovowodo/Umeghe ruling house. His Majesty was born on 1 June 1936 to the family of Erede Ejohwomu and Aliatete Ejohwomu. Under the watchful eyes of his late but prominent uncle, Patrick Ejohwomu, he commenced his primary school education in 1944 at the Native Authority (N.A.) School, Amai. In 1950, he moved to the N.A. School, Otu-Jeremi; in 1951, he transferred to the Catholic School at Okpara Water Side where he obtained the standard six certificate. In 1952, he gained admission into St. Thomas College, Ibusa from where he obtained Teacher Grade Two Certificate in 1956.
