Okpe

Okpe is a kingdom in Delta State, Nigeria. [1] Today, it is also the name of a local government area. It is one of the many kingdoms that make up Urhobo nation. [2] Its capital is Orerokpe. [3] [4] The kingdom plays host to the Osubi Airport (also known as Warri Airport), which is actually located at Osubi and the Delta State Trade Fair Complex. [5] The Orodje celebrated ten years on ancestral throne. [6] Major General Felix Mujakperuo is the king of Okpe Kingdom. The kingship is usually rotated between the four ruling houses. [7]

History

The Okpe kingdom was established as early as the 17th century. It has a traditional ruler with the title Orodje of Okpe. [8] The Okpe people are known to have migrated to found the present day Sapele and the Orodje of Okpe still exercises authority over the land of Sapele. [9]

The first king produced by this system was H.R.M. Esezi I, Orodje of Okpe whose sovereignty was around the period of 1770-1779. [10]

H.R.M. Esezi II, became the second Orodje of Okpe. As a pioneer advocate of democracy in the land of okpe, he also was pivotal to Nigeria. He was among the delegated kings that attended the 1957 Lyttelton Conference held in London in order to seek the Nigerian independence from the indirect government of the colonial master. He ruled the kingdom around the period of 1945-1966. [11]

H.R.M Orhoro I, the third Orodje of Okpe ruled the kingdom from around the period of 1972-2004. He was educated at a catholic school and also served in the Nigeria police force. He later earned a Business Administration Diploma in the United Kingdom. His early life experience served him well as a springboard for establishing and becoming a director of a company, the New Africa Industries Limited. [5]

H.R.M Orhue I Orodje of Okpe, is the fourth and current king of Okpe. He served as a high-ranking major general in the Nigerian Army. [12] He was officially crowned on 29 July 2006. [7]

Climate

The climate in Okpe is classified as tropical monsoon (Am). The city's average annual temperature is -0.82% lower than Nigeria's averages at 28.64°C (83.55°F). Okpe generally has 296.16 wet days (81.14% of the time) and receives about 241.52 millimetres (9.51 inches) of precipitation annually. [13]

The Itsekiri are one of the Yoruboid subgroup of Nigeria's Niger Delta area, They speak a Yoruboid language and can be found in Delta State. The Itsekiris presently number 2.7 million people and live mainly in the Warri South, Warri North and Warri South West local government districts of Delta State on the Atlantic coast of Nigeria. Significant communities of Itsekiris can be found in parts of Edo and Ondo states and in various other Nigerian cities including Lagos, Benin City, Port Harcourt and Abuja. Many people of Itsekiri descent also reside in the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada. The Itsekiris are closely related to the Yoruba of South Western Nigeria and also close to the Okpe people and Edo peoples. The Itsekiris traditionally refer to their land as the Kingdom of Warri or 'Iwere' as its proper name – which is geographically contiguous to the area covered by the three Warri local government districts. The area is a key centre of Nigeria's crude oil and natural gas production and petroleum refining and the main town Warri forms the industrial and commercial nucleus of the Delta State region.

Agbassa is the name of one of the two Urhobo kingdoms in Warri South Local Government, Delta State, Nigeria, the other being Okere-Urhobo. The name 'Agbassa' is of British origin derives from its original name 'AGBARHA', which is still in use. The current king is H.R.M Orhifi Ememoh II,.

Ozoro is a city and the headquarter of Isoko North Local Government area of Delta State, Nigeria. It is one of the two administrative units in the Isoko region of [Delta State, southern Nigeria. Ozoro had been incorrectly spelt Usoro in some older maps of Nigeria. Ozoro, the capital city of Isoko North, has a population of approximately 186,000 inhabitants.

The Agbon Kingdom is one of twenty-four subunits of the Urhobo people that have been in existence since before the rise of the Benin Empire in the 1440s and before the arrival of the Portuguese in the Western Niger Delta in the 1480s.

According to the language family tree classification by Ethnologue, Okpe, Urhobo and Uvwie, alongside Eruwa and Isoko, make up the five Southwestern Edoid languages of the Benue-Congo group. Quoting Johnstone (1993), Ethnologue puts the population of Urhobo people at 546,000, Okpe 25,400 (2000) and Uvwie 19,800 (2000). These three languages have geographically neighbouring languages: Izon and Itsekiri to the west and south, Ukwuani and Isoko to the east and Edo to the north. Thus, Isoko and Urhobo are similar languages that belong to the same linguistic family.

He wrote several books including The Urhobo People, On the Path of Progress, Ethnic Pluralism and Ethnic Conflicts in Nigeria, and Introduction to Sociology which he co-authored with William Ogionwo. Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Orohwedor Oborevwori is a Nigerian politician who is the current Governor of Delta State. He is the immediate past Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly as a representative of the Okpe Constituency of Delta State under the People's Democratic Party (Nigeria). He was declared the governor elect of Delta state on 20 March 2023 after winning the gubernatorial elections that was conducted on 18 March 2023.

The 2023 Delta State gubernatorial election will take place on 18 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Delta State, concurrent with elections to the Delta State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election—which was postponed from its original 11 March date—will be held three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent PDP Governor Ifeanyi Okowa is term-limited and cannot seek re-election to a third term.

The 2019 Delta State House of Assembly election was held on March 9, 2019, to elect members of the Delta State House of Assembly in Nigeria. All the 29 seats were up for election in the Delta State House of Assembly.
