Unholy was a Finnish avant-garde doom metal [1] band. Formed in 1988, they were one of the first doom metal groups in their home country.
Unholy originally started as a black-doom hybrid in 1988 under the name Holy Hell. After recording their first two demos in 1989, "Unhallowed Passion" and "Kill Jesus", they ultimately changed their name to Unholy in 1990. The band achieved underground popularity with its next demo and the 1991 EP Trip to Depressive Autumn, and signed with Lethal Records, an Austrian record label that released the band's first album, From the Shadows, in 1993. Unholy then signed with Avantgarde Music for the next album, The Second Ring of Power, but disbanded soon after its release in 1994. However, they re-formed only two years later. [2]
Unholy released their last two albums, Rapture and Gracefallen, also through Avantgarde Music. The band announced they were splitting up on 25 March 2002. [3]
In 2008, Unholy started co-operation with Ahdistuksen Aihio label to release all demos as vinyl, which were released in spring 2011 with complete history booklet of the band. After Peaceville Records bought them album release rights from Avantgarde Music, they started to negotiate for re-issuing all full-length albums. The reissuing project had some changes to cover arts but also for album songs list. Gracefallen got one bonus track titled "Gone" which was recorded originally during Gracefallen recording sessions, but was left out from the original release. Rapture included two live bonus tracks from year 1999. The Second Ring of Power not only had completely new cover artwork, but it also included a bonus DVD from the 1994 gig.
In the beginning of 2012, Unholy started to do preparations and rehearsals for combined comeback and farewell project with so called original line-up. This would last only for summer 2012. After that band would split up again. The band played four open air festival live shows in summer 2012, as the spirit of "good old times for good old fans"; to in Finland, one in Germany and one in Romania. In autumn, the band announced in its official website that "hats are off", meaning they retired as planned.

Jarno Salomaa, also credited as J.S,, is a Finnish musician. He formed the funeral doom metal group Shape of Despair in 1995 under the name Raven. Salomaa's first role was guitars and synth in Raven's Alone in the Mist, the first demo they made, although this demo was not released to the public. Salomaa then proceeded to appear in the first CD produced under the name Shape of Despair called Promo Tape 1998. While not a very grand name, the album contains the well-received songs of Quiet These Paintings Are and its outro entitled Outro.
Tormentor is a Hungarian black metal band formed in 1986 in Budapest. They recorded their first album, Anno Domini, in 1988, but were unable to release it until the end of communist rule in Hungary. The album reached Norway through the tape-trading community. Following the suicide of Per Ohlin, Mayhem invited Attila Csihar from Tormentor to join the band; he was to perform the vocals on De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. Tormentor split up in 1991. After a long break they reformed and released the more experimental Recipe Ferrum through Avantgarde Music in 2001, going on a long indefinite hiatus afterwards.
Stream from the Heavens is the only studio album by Finnish doom metal band Thergothon. It was recorded in late 1992 and released after many delays on June 15, 1994 through the Italian record label Avantgarde Music. The band had eventually disbanded a year before the release of the album. Stream from the Heavens continues the funeral doom subgenre that Thergothon pioneered with their 1991 demo Fhtagn nagh Yog-Sothoth. The album was re-issued on CD in 1999 and also in 2004 by Belgian label Painiac as a 12" LP, limited to 500 copies.

Amid Its Hallowed Mirth is the first studio album by the American death-doom band Novembers Doom. It was originally released in 1995 on Avantgarde Music, and later re-released in 2001 with a different cover and different track listing on Dark Symphonies and in 2008, it remastered format with different artwork and bonus tracks on The End Records.
Paradox were a Christian black metal band founded in London, England, in 1996 by guitarist and vocalist Michael, using the pseudonym "John Tarantula". They were reported to be, at the time, the only dark metal band in London promoting Christianity. Originally formed as a three-piece family unit, they released a demo The Outcasts in 1997 through their own record label, Tarantula Promotions. In 1998, a fourth member joined as a vocalist, and a second demo was released in 2000 entitled Through Pain There Is Joy. Following this release, the band reformed around Michael as a five-piece unit, and a sixth member later joined part-time on keyboards. In 2002, Paradox disbanded, releasing their last two songs as part of a compilation album entitled Overcome or Burn Forever in Hell/Arachnid Terror Sampler, which featured tracks from fourteen other artists. Following the breakup of the band, the projects Bloodshed and Slimegem were formed, and a third band, Hamal 'ak Hamashith, was promoted through Tarantula Promotions.
Hooded Menace are a Finnish death-doom band formed in Joensuu in 2007 by guitarist Lasse Pyykkö, who had previously performed in a death metal band named Phlegethon.
