Unitel Pictures is a Philippine independent film production company. [1] [2]

History

The film company was established in 2001 by Tony Gloria. American Adobo , co-produced with Star Cinema, was its maiden movie. [3]

Prior to establishing Unitel, Gloria served as supervising producer of Viva Films from its inception to 1987 and executive producer of Viva's subsidiary Falcon Films in 1988. In 1988, he left Viva and established his own film company Filmstar, known for releasing a slew of Joey de Leon's hit movies Elvis and James (1989) and Barbi for President (1991). In 1993, Filmstar closed and Gloria focused solely on TV commercials. [4]

In 2003, Unitel began producing and distributing its own movies. Among its critically-acclaimed and award-winning movies are Crying Ladies , Santa Santita , La Visa Loca , Inang Yaya and Peque Gallaga's directorial comeback film Pinoy/Blonde. [4] [5]

In 2004, Imelda was banned from Philippine cinemas for 20 days, as requested by Imelda Marcos to the Makati Regional Trial Court. However, it was canceled after Unitel filed a petition to reverse the ban. Upon its release to cinemas worldwide, it became a hit, earning more than Spider-Man 2 in the Philippines. [6]

In 2005, Unitel acquired worldwide rights to the Filipino-American thriller film Cavite . [7]

In 2010, MediaQuest Holdings acquired a 30% stake of Unitel Group. [8] As part of Unitel's alliance with MediaQuest, it ventured into TV production with the 2010 series Inday Wanda, starring Eugene Domingo. [9] Among its co-productions are I Do Bidoo Bidoo: Heto nAPO Sila! (2012) and Maledicto (2019). [10] [11]

In 2016, Unitel and MediaQuest launched an annual indie film festival CineFilipino. [12]

In 2024, Unitel and TVJ Productions co-produced the Eat Bulaga! Lenten Special.

The Cinema of the Philippines began with the introduction of the first moving pictures to the country on August 31, 1897, at the Salón de Pertierra in Manila. May Minamahal is a 1993 Filipino romantic comedy-drama film written and directed by Jose Javier Reyes. It is the first romantic drama film produced by Star Cinema, and its third film overall. Its rough translation in English is "Loving Someone". Starring Aga Muhlach and Aiko Melendez in their first film together in leading roles, the film revolves the romance between a young man who is the only son of an all-female family and a young girl who is the only daughter of an all-male family. The Red Shoes is a 2010 Filipino film directed by Raul Jorolan and produced by Unitel. The film uses a non-linear narrative style, using history to frame a tale of lost love and redemption spanning close to three decades, starting in 1981 with the tragic accident in the construction of the Manila Film Center, through to the 1986 People Power Revolution, which ended the 21-year Presidency of Ferdinand Marcos, and finally concluding in 2009, which finds the major characters of the film facing the consequences of the theft of one of 3,000 pairs of shoes of the First Lady Imelda Marcos. The film won the Special Jury Prize in the 2010 Bogota International Film Festival. It participated in the 2010 Vietnam International Film Festival in Hanoi and the 2010 China Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Festival. The film was rated "A" by the Cinema Evaluation Board of the Philippines and was also cited as Best Picture in the 2010 Catholic Mass Media Awards in the Philippines.

MediaQuest Holdings, Inc. is a Philippine media company based in Mandaluyong. It is involved in radio and television broadcasting, as well as direct-to-home satellite services and print media. Though an affiliate of telecommunications company PLDT, MediaQuest is owned by the former's Beneficial Trust Fund, a retirement pension plan funded through its Philippine Depository Receipts. PLDT does not directly own any media property as the current 1987 Constitution states that media companies should be 100% owned by Filipinos and the company's major shareholders include foreign entities such as First Pacific, and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone.

I Do Bidoo Bidoo: Heto nAPO Sila! is a 2012 Filipino musical, romantic-comedy film starring singers Sam Concepcion, Ogie Alcasid, Gary Valenciano, Zsa Zsa Padilla, comedian Eugene Domingo and introducing new actress Tippy Dos Santos. The film is produced by Unitel in partnership with Studio 5 and had a regular showing on August 29, 2012. The film features the music of APO Hiking Society, as a tribute to one of the most influential OPM artists.

Viva Cinema is a Philippine entertainment television channel owned by Viva Communications, available on satellite and cable TV providers.

Mga Kwento ni Lola Basyang was a withdrawn fantasy action-adventure film produced by Unitel Productions. The film is composed of two stories, "Pedrong Walang Takot" and "Mariang Alimango" derived from the short stories of Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang written by Severino Reyes. The film would have been directed by Mark Meilly, and Chris Martinez. The film also would have starred Richard Gomez, Paolo Contis, Sam Concepcion, Iza Calzado, Rufa Mae Quinto, Empress Schuck and Zsa Zsa Padilla. It was one of the 8 official entries for 2012 Metro Manila Film Festival but later on, the film sent a request letter to MMDA to pull out of the festival. On October 19, the film was replaced by Thy Womb.

Mark Neilson Mañosca Coleta, popularly known as Neil Coleta, is a Filipino actor and TV host. He appeared in the TV series Growing Up and 100 Days to Heaven.

Cine Mo! is a Philippine pay television channel owned and operated by ABS-CBN Corporation. It was one of the former freemium channels of ABS-CBN TVplus and was the complement to its English-language counterpart, Movie Central until its shutdown in June 2020. The channel's programming consists of local films and foreign movies, and operates 24/7 since March 2021.
