University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital is a federal government of Nigeria teaching hospital. [1] The current chief medical officer is Ahmed Ahidjo. The University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital was established in 1974. Then, the defunct North-East Government conceived the idea of constructing a Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri, the State capital. The then Federal Military Government took over and completed the project. The first patient was admitted on 18 February 1982, and the hospital was officially commissioned on 23 July. 1983. Being the first, and largest Teaching Hospital in the North- East sub region of Nigeria, UMTH covers 64,773 hectares of land. It has, since inception, witnessed monumental development in infrastructure, equipment and manpower, which culminated into its current designation as " Center of Excellence " in Immunology and Infectious Diseases, by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
The three(3) mandates of the UMTH are:
1) Provision of quality tertiary healthcare services in both curative and preventive medicine for people in the North- East and beyond.
2) Provision of quality training of medical and para-medical staff for the sub- region and beyond.
3) Conducting quality research into relevant health and health-related problems.
The institution is the largest hospital in Nigeria with 1305 beds spread across 27 wards with 17 clinical and 14 non-clinical departments. The hospital serves a population of more than 2.5 million in the North - East region and the neighbouring Cameroon, Chad and Niger Republics.
Prof. Ahmed Ahidjo is the 8th Chief Medical Director of UMTH for the past four years, from 3rd September, 2018 to Date. His one year in office, has marked enormous developmental achievements, that have left what his next four years would be in the imagination of everyone. [1]

The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) is a Federal higher institution located in Maiduguri, the capital city of Borno State in Northeast Nigeria. The university was created by the federal government of Nigeria in 1975, with the intention of its becoming one of the country's principal higher-education institutions. It enrolls about 25,000 students in its combined programs, which include a college of medicine and faculties of agriculture, arts, environmental science, Allied health science, Basic medical science, dentistry, education, engineering, law, management science, pharmacy, science, social science, and veterinary medicine. With the encouragement of the federal government, the university has recently been increasing its research efforts, particularly in the fields of agriculture, medicine and conflict resolution, and expanding the university press. The university is the major higher institution of learning in the north-eastern part of the country.
Jimma University (JU) is a public research university located in Jimma, Oromia Region, Ethiopia. Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) is a public teaching hospital established in 1923 and located in the Ablekuma South District in the Accra Metropolitan District of the Greater Accra Region, Ghana. Chukwuedu Nathaniel II Nwokolo was a Nigerian physician specialist in tropical diseases. He was recognised for discovering and mapping out the area of paragonimiasis lung disease in Eastern Nigeria, with a study of the disease in Africa and clinical research for its control. He founded SICREP: Sickle Cell Research Programme to effectively fight the disease in Nigeria and globally.

Mental healthcare generally refers to services ranging from assessment, diagnosis, treatment, to counseling, dedicated to maintaining and restoring mental well being of people. In Nigeria, there is significant disparity between the demand and supply of mental health services. Though there are policies aimed at addressing mental health issues in Nigeria, in-depth information on mental health service in Nigeria is non-existent. This makes it difficult to identify areas of needs, coordinate activities of advocacy groups, and make an informed decision about policy direction. In effect, there is continued neglect of mental health issues. About 25-30 percent of Nigerians suffer from mental illness and less than 10 percent of this population have access to professional assistance. The World Health Organization estimates that only about three percent of the government's budget on health goes to mental health.

In Nigeria, an early career doctor (ECD) is a medical or dental practitioner in the early phase of their professional career post-graduation. This includes house officers, resident doctors and medical officers below the rank of principal medical/dental officer (PMO/PDO). This term is more widely used in Nigeria compared to the junior doctor in the United Kingdom and Australia. Although Junior Doctors may seem synonymous with ECDs, ECDs embraces more cadres of doctors than junior doctors especially as it is in the UK or Australia. They may be engaged in training or non-training position at this point in their professional development. While medical officers and senior medical officers or the dentistry categories are in the non-training position. Generally, this period usually spans about the start of a career to fifteen years depending on the path an early career doctor chose for their professional development.
