Uzbekistan, officially the Republic of Uzbekistan, is a country in Central Asia. It is surrounded by five landlocked countries: Kazakhstan to the north; Kyrgyzstan to the northeast; Tajikistan to the southeast; Afghanistan to the south and Turkmenistan to the south-west. Along with Liechtenstein, it is one of two doubly landlocked countries.
The European Women's Handball Championship is the official competition for senior women's national handball teams of Europe, and takes place every two years. In addition to crowning the European champions, the tournament also serves as a qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games and World Championship. As of December 2018, the only teams that have ever won the championship are Norway, Denmark, Hungary, Montenegro and France (once).
The culture of Uzbekistan has a wide mix of ethnic groups and cultures, with the Uzbeks being the majority group. In 1995, about 71% of Uzbekistan's population was Uzbek. The chief minority groups were Russians (8.4%), Tajiks, Kazaks (4.1%), Tatars (2.4%), and Karakalpaks (2.1%), and other minority groups include Armenians and Koryo-saram. It is said however that the number of non-indigenous people living in Uzbekistan is decreasing as Russians and other minority groups slowly leave and Uzbeks return from other parts of the former Soviet Union.
Over the centuries, Uzbekistan has had a tradition of fostering equestrians and wrestlers (palvins). Some of the sports that originate in the country are the kurash, which is a type of upright wrestling. Other types of wrestling are belbogli kurash, turon, and boyqurgan all having the same origins. Other popular sports in Uzbekistan are football, basketball, boxing, wrestling, and judo.

Qizilqum Zarafshon is an Uzbeki football club based in Zarafshan. They play in the Uzbekistan Super League. Club is named after the Zeravshan River that flows nearby. Qizylqum in Uzbek means Red Sands, which also is the name of the local desert.

Since 1984 the Korean team has not only participated constantly in Olympic Games but also ranked among the top four nations every time. Korea grabbed the gold medal in 1988 and 1992, won the silver medal in 1984, 1996, 2004 and took bronze medal in 2008. They have earned two World Championship medals so far: In 1995, they also won the World Championship title in Austria/Hungary 1995 World Women's Handball Championship, they came off third to secure the bronze medal at the Croatia in 2003 World Women's Handball Championship. It is a twelve time Asian Champion, the tournament has been won by any other nation only twice.
Football Club AGMK is a professional football club based in Almalyk, Uzbekistan, participant of the Uzbekistan Super League. Their futsal club participated in AFC Futsal Club Championship.
The Bulgaria national women's handball team is the national team of Bulgaria. It takes part in international team handball competitions. The team's greatest result came in 1984 when they won the Balkan Championship along with achieving the 10th rank at the World Cup. The team participated in the 1982 World Women's Handball Championship in Hungary, placing 10th, and in the 1990 World Women's Handball Championship in South Korea, placing 12th.

The Handball Federation of Uzbekistan (HFU) is the administrative and controlling body for handball and beach handball in the Republic of Uzbekistan. Founded in 1991, HFU is a member of Asian Handball Federation (AHF) and the International Handball Federation (IHF).
