Vedaant Madhavan (born 21 August 2005) is an Indian freestyle swimmer. [3] He is a 5-time gold medalist at the Malaysian Open, a gold and silver medalist at the Danish Open, as well as a bronze medalist at the Latvian and Thailand Open. [4] Madhavan finished 5th at the Commonwealth Youth Games. [5]

Early life

Madhavan was born on 21 August 2005 in Mumbai to fashion designer Sarita Birje and renowned Bollywood actor R. Madhavan. [6]

While in school, he joined Goregaon Sports Club to learn swimming professionally. [7] He then shifted to Glenmark Aquatic Foundation in 2017 and started participating in national level meet. He completed his schooling at Universal American School of Dubai. [8]

Madhavan is majoring in marketing from Virginia Tech and is a part of the college's team Virginia Tech Hokies. [9]

Career

Madhavan's first international level test was Thailand Open 2018, where he clinched the bronze medal in 1500m freestyle. [10] He won silver in the 4x100m freestyle relay at the Asian Age Group Championships 2019. In 2021, he won the bronze medal in the 1500m freestyle at the Latvia Open. He then won the silver in the 1500m and the gold in the 800m events at the Danish Open 2022. [11]

He next participated at the World Junior Championships 2022 where he finished with his best-ever lap at 52.83s in 100m freestyle. Madhavan won five gold medals in the 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m and 1500m events at the 2023 Malaysia Open. [12] He also set two new personal bests during the tournament. [13]

While he has won several national medals, his most noteworthy performance at the level was during the 2023 Khelo India Youth Games where he won 7 medals including 5 gold and 2 silver. [14] He finished 5th in 1500 m freestyle at the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games and was the flag bearer of the Indian contingent. [15]

Virdhawal Vikram Khade is an Indian swimmer. He competed in the men's 50, 100, and 200 meters Freestyle swimming events at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, setting an Indian national record in 100 meters Freestyle. He failed to qualify for the semifinals in his events despite winning his qualification heat. Khade won a bronze medal in the 50 meters butterfly event at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou; it was India's first Asian Games medal in swimming in 24 years. He was conferred with the Arjuna Award in 2011 by the Government of India.

Ryan Andrew Cochrane is a retired Canadian competitive swimmer who specialised in freestyle distance events. Cochrane is an Olympic silver and bronze medallist as well as a triple gold medallist from the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships. He is also a four-time Commonwealth Games champion in the 400-metre and 1,500-metre having won both medals in 2010 and 2014. He holds six world championship medals from the 800-metre and 1500-metre, this also makes Cochrane Canada's all-time leading medallist for a swimmer at the World Aquatics Championships. Cochrane also won gold medals in the 400 and 1,500 m freestyle at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, as well as a bronze in the 4 x 200 m freestyle at the 2015 Games. From the year 2008 - 2015, Cochrane was named the Canadian male swimmer of the year - winning the award 8 times in a row.

Benjamin Proud is an English competitive swimmer, representing Great Britain at the Olympic Games, the FINA World Aquatics Championships and LEN European Aquatics Championships, and England at the Commonwealth Games. Proud specialises in sprint freestyle and butterfly races, specifically the 50-metre distance in both. He is the 2022 World Champion in the 50 metre freestyle, his second long course world title. He is the 2017 world champion in the 50-metre butterfly. He is only the third male swimmer to be simultaneously short-course and long-course World Champion at 50 metre freestyle, after César Cielo and Florent Manaudou. in 2024, at his third attempt he won his first Olympic medal, a silver, in the 50 metre freestyle at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

Scott made history after winning four medals - more than any other British athlete at a single Olympic Games - in Tokyo 2020, simultaneously becoming Great Britain's most decorated swimmer in Olympic history. He currently represents Energy Standard in the International Swimming League. Litchfield is the son of former professional footballer, Peter Litchfield and his younger brother Joe Litchfield is also a swimmer.

Florian Wellbrock is a German swimmer. He is the world record holder in the short course 1500 metre freestyle. He is an Olympic champion, multiple World Champion and European champion, in both Long and Short Courses. At the 2020 Summer Olympics, he won gold in the 10 kilometre open water and bronze in the 1500 metre freestyle. In total, Wellbrock has won 28 medals at international competitions of which 20 are gold. This includes his gold medal at the Olympic games, six at the World Championships, six at the Swimming World Cup and six at the Open Water Swimming World Cup.

Kyle Abeysinghe is a Sri Lankan national swimmer who has represented his country at several international competitions. Domestically, Abeysinghe holds numerous national records, has been a national champion multiple times, and is a member of the Killer Whale Aquatic Club, coached by his father, Manoj Abeysinghe. At the 2017 Youth Commonwealth Games in Nassau, Bahamas, Abeysinghe won two silver medals in the 50m and 100m freestyle, becoming the only Sri Lankan swimmer to achieve this feat.

Rebecca Smith is a Canadian swimmer. She represented Canada at the 2020 Summer Olympics, winning a silver medal in the 4×100 metre freestyle relay, and is a multi-medallist at the World Aquatics Championships, World Swimming Championships, Commonwealth Games, and Pan Pacific Swimming Championships.

Robert Christian FinkeOLY, better known as Bobby Finke, is an American competitive swimmer. He won two gold medals for the United States in the 2020 Summer Olympics: the men's 800-meter and 1500-meter freestyle swims. Finke successfully defended his title in 1500 m freestyle at the 2024 Summer Olympics, setting the world record and added a silver medal in the 800 m freestyle. He swam for the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida from 2018–2022 under Coach Anthony Nesty. He currently swims as part of the pro group at UF. Before swimming in college, Bobby swam for Coach Fred Lewis on the Saint Petersburg Aquatics club team, located in Saint Petersburg, Florida.

Daniel Wiffen is an Irish swimmer. He is an Olympic champion and bronze medalist, two-time world champion and three-time European short course champion.

Lani Pallister is an Australian competitive swimmer. She is a world record holder in two sports, with a world record in swimming, the short course 4×200-metre freestyle relay, and world records in life saving for the youth age group in the 100-metre rescue medley and 200-metre super lifesaver. She holds the Oceanian, Commonwealth, and Australian records in the short course 1500-metre freestyle and the Australian record in the short course 800-metre freestyle. She is the first female World Short Course champion in the 1500-metre freestyle, winning the inaugural event for women at the 2022 edition. Over the course of the 2022 World Short Course Championships, she won the gold medal in each of the four events she contested.
