R. Velraj is an Indian cinematographer, director and writer who primarily works in Tamil and Hindi cinema. He is well known for his camera work in films like Asuran, Aadukalam, Vada Chennai, Kadaikutty Singam and Komban, and for directing Velaiilla Pattadhari and Thanga Magan.

Personal life

Rajamani Velraj was born in a village called Kootthiyar Kundu near Madurai, Tamil Nadu. He went to PKN Boys Higher Secondary School (Tirumangalam), and studied at Madurai Sourastra College. [1]

Career

Early in his career, he was associated with cinematographer Tirru and worked as an assistant cinematographer in several Tamil films, for example Aalavandhan. After working with actor Dhanush in Parattai Engira Azhagu Sundaram, Dhanush recommended Velraj for his next film Polladhavan directed by Vetrimaaran, for which he won the Vijay Award for Best Cinematographer. Velraj and Vetrimaaran continued working together, making films such as Aadukalam and Asuran, their most recent film. His first directional debut was Velaiilla Pattadhari, starring Dhanush and Amala Paul and with Anirudh as music director. The film was successful and Velraj won several awards for best debut director. In 2015, he directed his second film, Thanga Magan. Velray is a member of the ISC.

Venkatesh Prabhu Kasthuri Raja, better known by his stage name Dhanush, is an Indian actor, producer, director, writer, lyricist, screenwriter and playback singer who predominantly works in Tamil cinema. AR Murugadoss Indian film director

Murugadoss Arunasalam, commonly known as AR Murugadoss, is an Indian director, producer, and screenwriter who predominantly works in the Tamil film industry. <i>Aadukalam</i>

Aadukalam is a 2011 Indian Tamil-language action thriller film written and directed by Vetrimaran. The film stars Dhanush and Taapsee Pannu in the lead roles with Kishore, V. I. S. Jayapalan, Naren, and Murugadoss play supporting roles. The film was released on 14 January 2011 to positive critical feedback. The film won six awards at the 58th National Film Awards, including Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Actor. The film was also felicitated with five awards in 59th Filmfare Awards South – Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Music Director and Best Cinematography. Based on an online poll by The Times of India, Vetrimaran was chosen as the best director for Aadukalam. The Telugu dubbed version Pandem Kollu was released on 30 January 2015. Vetrimaran once said in an interview that the idea of story was inspired from several movies i.e, Caché (film), Amores perros, Babel (film), The Hire#Powder Keg, Thevar Magan, Virumaandi, Paruthiveeran and books i.e, Roots: The Saga of an American Family, Shantaram (novel). Vetrimaaran

Vetri Maaran is an Indian film director, screenwriter and film producer, who works in the Tamil film industry. As of 2016, he has won four National Film Awards and two Filmfare Award South.

Kalaipuli S. Thanu is an Indian film producer and distributor, known for his films produced in Tamil cinema. He made several films through his two production companies, V Creations and Kalaipuli Films International. His net worth as of 2016 is approximately $65 million. Many of his films have been commercially successful, three of which are among the top-ten highest grossing Tamil films of all time. He has Won 1 National Film Awards and One Filmfare Awards South in his Career.

<i>Vada Chennai</i> 2018 action crime film by Vetrimaaran

Vada Chennai is a 2018 Indian Tamil-language action crime film written and directed by Vetrimaaran in his fourth film as a director. It is the first installment in a planned trilogy. Produced by A. Subaskaran's Lyca Productions and Dhanush's Wunderbar Films with Vetrimaaran's Grass Root Film Company, it features Dhanush in the lead role as Anbu, a skilled carrom player who becomes a reluctant participant in a gang war between two rival gangsters. Ameer, Andrea Jeremiah, and Aishwarya Rajesh appear in other primary roles, while Samuthirakani, Daniel Balaji, Kishore, and Pawan appear in supporting roles.

Manimaran is an Indian film director, working in the Tamil film industry. He made his directorial debut in Tamil, Udhayam NH4 (2013) featuring Siddharth and a newcomer Ashrita Shetty in lead roles which was simultaneously dubbed and released in Telugu in the same year. Velaiilla Pattadhari, popularly referred to as VIP, is a 2014 Indian Tamil-language masala film written,and filmed by Velraj, in his directorial debut. This film is Dhanush’s 25th film. The film features Dhanush, Amala Paul, while Vivek, Saranya Ponvannan, Samuthirakani and Surbhi play supporting roles.

Aadukalam Murugadoss is an Indian film actor who has appeared in Tamil language films. He made his breakthrough portraying Dhanush's friend in Vetrimaaran's critically acclaimed 2011 film. Aadukalam, thus adding the name of the film as a prefix to create a stage name.

V. I. S. Jayapalan is a Sri Lankan writer, political commentator and actor who has appeared in Tamil language films. He made his acting debut in Vetrimaaran's Aadukalam (2011) and won a National Film Award for his portrayal.

<i>Visaranai</i>

Visaranai is a 2015 Indian Tamil-language crime thriller film written and directed by Vetrimaaran. It is based on the novel Lock Up by M. Chandrakumar. The film features Dinesh, Anandhi, Samuthirakani, Aadukalam Murugadoss, Kishore, Pradheesh Raj, and Silambarasan Rathnasamy in the lead roles. Dhanush is an Indian actor, producer, lyricist and singer known for his work in Tamil cinema. He made his acting debut in 2002 with the coming of age drama, Thulluvadho Ilamai, directed by his father Kasthuri Raja. His role as a mentally-disturbed man in Kaadhal Kondein (2003)—directed by his brother Selvaraghavan—won him critical acclaim. The following year, he starred in Subramaniam Siva's Thiruda Thirudi, a commercial success. This was followed by a series of commercial failures—Pudhukottaiyilirundhu Saravanan (2004), Sullan (2004) and Dreams (2004). He had two releases in 2005—Devathaiyai Kanden and Adhu Oru Kana Kaalam.

Thanga Magan is a 2015 Indian Tamil-language drama film written and directed by Velraj. Dhanush produced and stars in the film alongside Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Amy Jackson. The film entered production in March 2015 and was released on 18 December 2015. The film performed poorly at the box office.

Velaiilla Pattadhari 2 is a 2017 Indian action comedy film directed by Soundarya Rajnikanth. The film was shot simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu, with the latter titled VIP 2. It is a sequel to the 2014 film Velaiilla Pattadhari and has Dhanush, Amala Paul, Vivek, Hrishikesh, Saranya Ponvannan, and Samuthirakani reprising their roles, while Kajol plays an antagonistic role in her second Tamil film after 1997's Minsara Kanavu. Dhanush, besides acting, also co-produced with N. Ramasamy, and wrote the story and dialogues for the film. Its music was composed by Sean Roldan. It was released worldwide on 11 August 2017, after initially planning to release on Dhanush's birthday, July 28.

<i>Asuran</i> (2019 film) 2019 Indian Tamil-language film directed by Vetrimaaran

Asuran is a 2019 Indian Tamil-language action drama film written and directed by Vetrimaaran and produced by Kalaipuli S. Thanu under his production banner V Creations. The film is based on Poomani's novel Vekkai ("Heat"). The film stars Dhanush and Manju Warrier, where the latter makes her Tamil debut. G. V. Prakash Kumar scored the music for the film, renewing his collaboration with Vetrimaaran. The cinematography was performed by Velraj, with editing by R. Ramar. Asuran was released on 4 October 2019. The film's plot is influenced by the real-life Kilvenmani massacre that occurred in 1968. The film was a commercial success.
