Vijay Ulaganath is an Indian cinematographer, who primarily works in the South India film industry. He is known for his work in films such as Neelathamara , Thoonga Nagaram , Bhaskar The Rascal , and Sigaram Thodu . He has worked as a cinematographer in Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu films.
After the graduation in Diploma in Film Technology from Film and Television Institute of Tamil Nadu, he started his career as an assistant cinematographer with Ace Cinematographer K. V. Anand in the films Nayak, The Legend of Bhagat Singh, Chellame, Sivaji, Khakee.
He turned as an independent cinematographer in the film Madampi [1] directed by B. Unnikrishnan. [2] Then he worked with Director Lal Jose in the film Neelathamara. [3] Later he joined with Director Gaurav Narayanan in his Debut film Thoonga Nagaram [4] [5] produced by Cloud Nine Movies.
He was one of the cinematographers in the film Kerala Cafe Malayalam anthology film directed by a team of ten directors, ten cinematographers, musicians, editors, art directors and almost all the top Malayalam film actors joined this unique venture. [6] He teamed up with director Siddique in the Malayalam blockbuster Bhaskar the Rascal, [7] [8] which was remade in Tamil as Bhaskar Oru Rascal.

In 1982, he acted as the Antagonist in Padayottam which was the first 70 mm film in Malayalam. In 1983, he stard in the I. V. Sasi directorial Iniyenkilum. In 1984, he acted in Kanamarayathu, Adiyozhukkukal, Karimpin Poovinakkare and Athirathram. These all are directed by I. V. Sasi. In 1986, he acted in 2 superhit films. They are Avanazhi and Vartha. Avanazhi was followed by Inspector Balram and Balram Vs Tharadas.

The film, produced by Dhayanidhi Alagiri's Cloud Nine Movies, was shot entirely in Madurai, the city where the story takes place and which the title refers to.
