Makerere University is Uganda's largest and oldest institution of higher learning, first established as a technical school in 1922, and the oldest currently active university in East Africa. It became an independent national university in 1970. Today, Makerere University is composed of nine colleges and one school offering programmes for about 36,000 undergraduates and 4,000 postgraduates. The main administrative block was gutted by fire in September 2020 and the cause of the fire is yet to be established.

John Mwesigwa Robin Nagenda was a Ugandan writer, political figure, and sportsman. In the 1960s, he pioneered post-colonial English literature in East Africa. He lived in exile in the United Kingdom in the 1970s and 1980s before returning to Uganda in 1986. He subsequently became a senior advisor to President Yoweri Museveni and a prominent newspaper columnist. He represented East Africa at the 1975 Cricket World Cup and was later president of the Uganda Cricket Association.
Samson Babi Mululu Kisekka was a Ugandan politician who was Prime Minister of Uganda from 1986 to 1991 and the fifth Vice President of Uganda from 1991 to 1994. He also worked as a medical doctor and diplomat. He was closely associated with Yoweri Museveni.
Muhammad Kibirige Mayanja is a Ugandan politician who founded and served as the first President of the Justice Forum party in Uganda. His first attempt at Politics was in 1994 when he contested for a Constituent Assembly (CA) seat in Kawempe North constituency, where he finished in second position. In 1996, the then little known Kibirige Mayanja took the country by surprise when he rose up to challenge President Yoweri Museveni for the country's presidency. True to his promise, he traversed the country in a three-man presidential bid, putting up a spirited campaign to the end of the race in which he obtained at least 2.5 percent of the valid votes cast, and finishing behind the leading two candidates, Yoweri K. Museveni and Ssemwogerere Paul Kawanga. A director of Planning and development at Makerere University at the time, Mayanja returned to his University job, and laid new strategies for recruiting supporters to his newly found Party, Justice Forum, famously called JEEMA by most Ugandans. He bounced back in the presidential race in 2001, which attracted a double number of candidates than the earlier one of 1996. In the 2001 elections, he completed in the fourth position. Syda Namirembe Bbumba is a Ugandan accountant, politician and banker. She served in the Cabinet of Uganda as Minister of Energy and Minerals from 2002 to 2006, Minister of Gender, Labor and Social Development from 2006 to 2008, Minister of Finance from 2009 to 2011, and Minister of Gender, Labor and Social Development again from 2011 to 2012. She was also the elected Member of Parliament for Nakaseke County North, Nakaseke District She was the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on National Economy and also Chairperson of the Parliamentary Islamic Banking Forum. She was Sub-Saharan Africa's representative to the OIC Women Advisory Panel.
Nuwe Amanya Mushega, commonly known as Amanya Mushega, is a Ugandan lawyer, politician, diplomat, and civil servant. He served as the secretary general of the East African Community (EAC) from 2001 until 2006.
Christine Joyce Dradidi Ondoa is a physician and medical administrator who is regarded as one of Uganda's finest leaders especially in ensuring that the quality of health service delivery in Uganda is improved, and discipline and ethical code of conduct among health workers is observed. She is a Ugandan paediatrician and Christian Leader. She currently serves as the Director General of the Uganda AIDS Commission. She was appointed to that position by the President of Uganda in February 2014. Prior to that, she served as a Senior Presidential Advisor to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Public Health. She was a member of the board of directors of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI). She was Minister of Health in the Ugandan Cabinet from 2011 to 2013. She was appointed to that position on 27 May 2011, but was replaced by Ruhakana Rugunda on 23 May 2013. On account of being a cabinet minister she was a member of the Ugandan Parliament, in an ex officio capacity. Prior to that, she was the Executive Director of Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, one of the fourteen regional referral hospitals in Uganda.
General elections were held in Uganda on 18 February 2016 to elect the President and Parliament. Polling day was declared a national holiday.
Jane Nambakire Mulemwa is a Ugandan chemist and educator. She is the chairperson of the Petroleum Authority of Uganda.
Judith Tukahirwa Tumusiime is a Ugandan environmental scientist, water and sanitation consultant, and former management executive. She is the immediate past deputy executive director of the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA). She was appointed to that position in December 2012. She resigned on 31 October 2016, citing interference from politicians and security agencies.
Florence Isabirye Muranga is a Ugandan biochemist, food scientist, academic and corporate executive, who serves as the executive director of the Presidential Initiative on Banana Industrial Development (PIBID), a presidential project started in an effort to boost the commercialization of Uganda's bananas through research and industrialization.
Olive Kazaarwe Mukwaya, is a Ugandan lawyer and judge who, serves as the Commission Secretary of the presidential Commission of Inquiry into Land Matters in Uganda, established by president Yoweri Museveni in December 2016. Immediately prior to her appointment to this commission, she served as a Registrar, in the Planning and Development Division of the Judiciary of Uganda. There she oversaw the implementation of a multi-million dollar "Good Governance Project", funded by a donation from DANIDA, to the Government of Uganda.
Percy Night Tuhaise, is a Ugandan lawyer and judge who, on 8 February 2018, was appointed by president Yoweri Museveni, to the Uganda Court of Appeal which also doubles as the country's Constitutional Court. Prior to her current position she served on the High Court of Uganda.

Dr. Lillian Aber is the women's representative for Kitgum District in the eleventh Parliament of Uganda. She represented the National Resistance Movement under re-elected President of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni. In the 2021 general election, Aber won with 41,192 votes against Roselyn Alanyo Olobo of the Uganda People's Congress and Norah Odokorach, an independent candidate.
Aminah Zawedde, is a Ugandan computer scientist. academic and public administrator, who serves as the permanent secretary of the Uganda Ministry of ICT and National Guidance since 15 July 2021. Before that Zawedde was a lecturer and researcher in the School of Computing and Informatics Technology at Makerere University, the oldest and largest public university in Uganda.
Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi is a Ugandan politician and educationist who is the woman representative for Kisoro District, and Minister of State for Gender, Labour and Social Development appointed in 2021 by the President Yoweri Museveni in the Ugandan 11th Parliament.
