Viorel Simion (born 19 October 1981) is a Romanian professional boxer. As an amateur, he represented Romania at the 2004 Summer Olympics and won a bronze medal at the 2005 World Championships.

Amateur career

As an amateur, Simion won two bronze medals, at the 2005 World Championships in Mianyang, China and at the 2002 European Championships in Perm, Russia. He also represented Romania at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece also as a featherweight.

Romania competed at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, United States. 124 competitors, 71 men and 53 women, took part in 86 events in 13 sports. Notably, Romania was the only Eastern Bloc nation to participate at these Games; all others followed the Soviet Union's boycott of the Games. The Romanian athletes were greeted with warm applause as they entered the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum during the opening ceremony, in part an affirmation of the nation's defiance of the boycott. The Romanian Olympic team was phenomenally successful at the games, ultimately placing second to the United States in the gold medal tally.

Mircea Șimon is a retired Romanian heavyweight boxer. He took up boxing in 1971 at Dinamo Bucharest, coached by Constantin Nour, and won a silver medal at the 1976 Olympics, losing to Teófilo Stevenson in the final. Șimon also won four national senior titles and two bronze medals at the European Amateur Boxing Championships. In 1978 he fled to the United States, where in 1978–1979 he fought 14 bouts as a professional with a record of 12 wins and two draws. He later returned to Romania and coached Marian and Dorel Simion. He then took a break from boxing for ten years, and in 2007 worked with Romanian Boxing Federation to prepare the national team for the 2008 Olympics.

Dorel Simion is a Romanian boxer. Simion won the Welterweight bronze medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics. He also won gold at the 1997 World Championships and 1998 European Championships.
