State Route 606 in Fairfax and Loudoun Counties, Virginia is a secondary state highway [1] [2] traversing the communities of Reston, Herndon, Sterling, Arcola, and South Riding. The road is important not only because it is an inter-county connector, but it goes around the back of Dulles Airport, is part of the Loudoun County Parkway, and it provides a shortcut between the Reston / Herndon area and U.S. Route 50. Although the Herndon streets are not technically part of SR 606, they are signed as SR 606, and they connect to streets that are part of SR 606, thus providing a continuous route. [3]
SR 606 goes by five names: Baron Cameron Avenue in Fairfax County, Elden Street in Herndon as SR 235-6656, Sterling Road in Herndon as SR 235-6656, Old Ox Road in Loudoun County, and the Loudoun County Parkway to its terminus at SR 620 (Braddock Rd.).
In Reston, SR 606 is called Baron Cameron Avenue. Baron Cameron Avenue starts at an intersection with SR 7, Leesburg Pike. For a short distance (0.18 mi.) SR 606 is concurrent with SR 674. Baron Cameron Avenue then travels westward through the northern part of Reston to the Herndon border.
The Town of Herndon is responsible for the maintenance of its streets, [4] although the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) helps towns and cities financially, and has designated these roads with state route numbers. [5]
Although SR 606 technically ends at the Herndon border, roads within Herndon are signed as SR 606, and they provide a direct connector to SR 606 in Loudoun County, so they are included here. When SR 606 enters the town the route changes to Elden Street, the main commercial road of Herndon. When Elden Street intersects with SR 228, Elden Street becomes SR 228. (signed) SR 606 is concurrent with SR 228 / Elden Street to Sterling Road, where the route continues west toward Loudoun County.
In Loudoun County SR 606 continues the path of Sterling Road as a four lane divided highway called Old Ox Road. It heads west until it crosses over SR 28, Sully Road at an interchange. It continues toward the Dulles Greenway (SR 267) as it passes some warehouses on the south side. The intersection with the Dulles Greenway is the planned location for the Route 606 station of the proposed Phase 2 of the Silver Line of the Washington Metro.
After the interchange with the Dulles Greenway, SR 606 turns to the southwest and goes around the back of Dulles Airport. It passes some single-family houses to the west, and Dulles Airport and some low rise office buildings to the east.
There is a now a four-way intersection with Old Ox Road and Arcola Boulevard. Drivers use the triple left turn lanes to turn left onto what is now known as Loudoun County Parkway. The road expands into three through lanes westbound and two through lanes eastbound. It continues as such until the intersection with US 50, where it changes back into two through lanes westbound and two through lanes eastbound. It then passes through a portion of South Riding, and terminates at the intersection of SR 620 (Braddock Road) and SR 613 (Ticonderoga Road), just south of South Riding.
VDOT has plans to widen Elden St. between Van Buren Street and the Fairfax County Parkway (SR 286). However, due to budget cutbacks, this project has been put on hold. [6]
Before construction on the Loudoun County Parkway started, SR 606 ended at the intersection with US 50. As of March 2010 [update] , SR 606 has been extended from US 50 to SR 620 (Braddock Road). The portion between SR 620 (Braddock Road) and SR 7 (Harry Byrd Hwy) has been designated part of the Loudoun County Parkway, and is a five-lane divided highway. Herndon is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States, part of the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. In 2020, the population at the census was 24,655, which makes it the largest of three incorporated towns in the county.
The Washington–Baltimore combined metropolitan statistical area is a statistical area including the overlapping metropolitan areas of Washington, D.C. and Baltimore. The region includes Central Maryland, Northern Virginia, three counties in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, and one county in south-central Pennsylvania. It is the most educated, highest-income, and third-largest combined statistical area in the United States behind New York City–Newark, NJ and Los Angeles–Long Beach.
State Route 267 is a freeway in the US state of Virginia. It consists of two end-to-end toll roads – the Dulles Toll Road and Dulles Greenway – as well as the non-tolled Dulles Access Road, which lies in the median of Dulles Toll Road and then extends east to Falls Church. The combined roadway provides a toll road for commuting and a free road for access to Washington Dulles International Airport. The three sections are operated and maintained by separate agencies: Dulles Toll Road and Dulles Access Road are maintained by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA); the Dulles Greenway is owned by TRIP II, a limited partnership, but is maintained by Atlas Arteria, an Australian company which owns the majority stake in the partnership. The Dulles Access Road's median hosts the Silver Line of the Washington Metro between the airport and Tysons.
Sterling, Virginia, refers most specifically to a census-designated place (CDP) in Loudoun County, Virginia, United States. The population of the CDP as of the 2020 United States Census was 30,337 The CDP boundaries are confined to a relatively small area between Virginia State Route 28 on the west and Virginia State Route 7 on the northeast, excluding areas near SR 606 and the Dulles Town Center.
State Route 620 in Fairfax and Loudoun Counties, Virginia is a secondary state highway. The entire length of SR 620 is also known as Braddock Road. SR 620 also has a short concurrency with SR 659 / Union Mill Road in Centreville.
Virginia State Route 7 (VA 7) is a major primary state highway and busy commuter route in northern Virginia, United States. It travels southeast from downtown Winchester to SR 400 in downtown Alexandria. Its route largely parallels those of the Washington & Old Dominion Trail and the Potomac River. Between its western terminus and Interstate 395 (I-395), SR 7 is part of the National Highway System. In 1968, the Virginia State Highway Commission designated the road as the "Harry Flood Byrd Highway" between Alexandria and Winchester to commemorate Harry F. Byrd Sr. (1887–1966).
The Fairfax County Parkway, numbered State Route 286, is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia, acting as an arterial route in Fairfax County with a mix of interchanges and signalized and unsignalized intersections. Its alignment runs from southeast to northwest and roughly corresponds to part of the once-proposed Outer Beltway around Washington, D.C. The first segment of the roadway opened in 1987; the road was completed in 2010.
South Riding is a census-designated place and planned community in Loudoun County, Virginia, United States. The South Riding homeowner association was founded in January 1995 to provide services to the community. Neighboring U.S. Route 50 and State Route 28 provide access to the Dulles/Reston/Tysons Corner technology corridor and other major employment centers in Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C.
State Route 123 or Virginia State Route 123 is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. The state highway runs 29.27 miles (47.11 km) from U.S. Route 1 in Woodbridge north to the Chain Bridge across the Potomac River into Washington from Arlington. It goes by four local names. From its southern terminus to the Occoquan River Bridge, it is known as Gordon Boulevard. From the Occoquan River Bridge to the city of Fairfax it is known as Ox Road. From Fairfax until it enters the Town of Vienna, it is known as Chain Bridge Road. Then, as it passes through the Town of Vienna, it is known as Maple Avenue. After leaving the Town of Vienna, the name reverts to Chain Bridge Road, and continues this way until the intersection with I-495 in Tysons. Between Tysons and the George Washington Memorial Parkway, it is known as Dolley Madison Boulevard. After crossing over the George Washington Memorial Parkway, the name once again reverts to Chain Bridge Road and continues this way until the end of the road, at Chain Bridge. SR 123 is a partial circumferential highway in Northern Virginia that connects Woodbridge in eastern Prince William County with the independent city of Fairfax and the Fairfax County communities of Vienna, Tysons, and McLean, the last being the home of the National Counterterrorism Center and the Central Intelligence Agency. The state highway also connects all of the major highways that radiate from Washington, including Interstate 95 (I-95), I-66, US 29, US 50, SR 267, and the George Washington Memorial Parkway. Furthermore, SR 123 crosses another pair of circumferential highways, I-495 and the Fairfax County Parkway, and SR 7, a major northwest–southeast highway through Northern Virginia. The state highway is a part of the National Highway System for its entire length.

The route serves as a major artery in the Northern Virginia region, with it being an important two-lane highway in rural Fauquier and Prince William Counties, the main thoroughfare through Manassas and Manassas Park, and a high-capacity freeway through Fairfax and Loudoun Counties.
Reston Town Center station is a rapid transit station on the Silver Line of the Washington Metro in Reston, an unincorporated area in Northern Virginia. It opened on November 15, 2022.
Herndon station is a Washington Metro station in Fairfax County, Virginia on the Silver Line that opened on November 15, 2022. The station is in the median strip of VA-267 adjacent to the current Herndon-Monroe Park and Ride parking garage and bus station, which is on the south side of the highway. It has two pedestrian bridges across SR 267 to reach entrances on either side of the highway. Bus bays are located on the south side of the highway.
State Route 228 is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. The state highway runs 4.53 miles (7.29 km) from SR 657 at the southern town limit of Herndon north to SR 7 near Dranesville. SR 228 is the main north–south highway through Herndon, connecting the town directly with SR 7 and indirectly with SR 267 in northwestern Fairfax County.
Virginia State Route 234 is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. It runs from U.S. Route 1 near Dumfries via Independent Hill as Dumfries Road, bypasses Manassas as Prince William Parkway, and has a brief concurrency with Interstate 66 for 2.27 miles (3.65 km) between exits 44 and 47 before continuing northwest via Catharpin to U.S. Route 15 near Woolsey as Sudley Road.
State Route 645 in Fairfax County, Virginia is a secondary state highway. There are six portions, three of them being major, named Wall Road, Lees Corner Road, Stringfellow Road, Clifton Road, Main Street and Burke Lake Road. There are also numerous overlaps : some include SR 657 / Centreville Road, U.S. Route 50, SR 652, SR 612, and SR 641. A concurrency used to exist at US 29 near Centreville until the 1990s.

SR 602 is the main road through Reston, and connects with SR 608, SR 267, SR 606, and SR 7. All these connections provide ample commuting opportunities for the residents of Reston and the residents of neighboring areas.
State Route 657 in Fairfax County, Virginia is a secondary state highway which traverses the western portion of the county. It runs 8.4 miles from SR 28 near the boundary between Centreville and Chantilly to SR 228 at the town limits of Herndon.
