Vivek K Goyal is an American engineering professor, author, and inventor. He is currently Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Boston University (BU). [1] He was named Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 2014 [2] and named OSA (now Optica) Fellow in the 2020 class. [3] He was also named Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in the 2022 class. [4] He is a recipient of a 2024 Guggenheim Fellowship. [5]

Education and career

Goyal attended Malcolm Price Laboratory School in Cedar Falls, Iowa, through graduation from its Northern University High School division. [6] He received BS and BSE degrees from the University of Iowa in 1993 and MS and PhD degrees from University of California, Berkeley, in 1995 and 1998, respectively. From 1998 to 2000 he served as a Member of Technical Staff at Bell Labs, and from 2001 to 2003 served as a Senior Research Engineer at Digital Fountain. He returned to UC Berkeley in 2003 as a visiting scholar, and from 2004 to 2013 was with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, including holding the Esther and Harold E. Edgerton chair in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. [7] He has been with Boston University since 2016, after two years with the Nest Labs division of Alphabet Inc. [8]

Scientific contributions

Goyal coauthored the 2014 textbook Foundations of Signal Processing with Martin Vetterli and Jelena Kovačević, which was reviewed in IEEE Signal Processing Magazine. [9]

In 2013, Goyal's group invented first-photon imaging, a method to generate 3D depth and reflectivity images from exactly one detected photon per pixel, even when up to half of the detected photons are due to ambient light. Publication of an article introducing the method in Science [10] resulted in widespread news coverage. [11] [12]

In an article published in Nature in 2019, [13] Goyal's group introduced a method for non-line-of-sight (NLOS) imaging that uses only an ordinary digital camera. This contrasts with many earlier methods that use pulsed laser illumination and detectors sensitive to single photons. [14] [15] [16] He later collaborated on work that extended laser-based NLOS imaging to 1.43 km stand-off distance. [17]

U.S. patents have been issued for 21 of Goyal's inventions. [18]

Martin Vetterli is the president of École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland, succeeding Patrick Aebischer. He's a professor of engineering and was formerly the president of the National Research Council of the Swiss National Science Foundation.

Ghost imaging is a technique that produces an image of an object by combining information from two light detectors: a conventional, multi-pixel detector that does not view the object, and a single-pixel (bucket) detector that does view the object. Two techniques have been demonstrated. A quantum method uses a source of pairs of entangled photons, each pair shared between the two detectors, while a classical method uses a pair of correlated coherent beams without exploiting entanglement. Both approaches may be understood within the framework of a single theory.

Ali H. Sayed is the dean of engineering at EPFL, where he teaches and conducts research on Adaptation, Learning, Statistical Signal Processing, and Signal Processing for Communications. He is the Director of the EPFL Adaptive Systems Laboratory. He has authored several books on estimation and filtering theories, including the textbook Adaptive Filters, published by Wiley & Sons in 2008. Professor Sayed received the degrees of Engineer and Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of São Paulo, Brazil, in 1987 and 1989, respectively, and the Doctor of Philosophy degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1992.

Henrique "Rico" S. Malvar is a distinguished Brazilian engineer and a signal processing researcher at Microsoft Research's largest laboratory in Redmond, Washington, United States. He was the managing director of the lab following the departure of long-time Managing Director Dan Ling in 2007, when he oversaw about 350 researchers. He was a Distinguished Engineer at Microsoft for over 15 years. He retired from Microsoft in January 2023, and later received the title of Microsoft Emeritus Researcher.

Alan Conrad Bovik is an American engineer, vision scientist, and educator. He is a professor at the University of Texas at Austin (UT-Austin), where he holds the Cockrell Family Regents Endowed Chair in the Cockrell School of Engineering and is Director of the Laboratory for Image and Video Engineering (LIVE). Peyman Milanfar is a Distinguished Scientist at Google, where he leads the Computational Imaging team. Prior to this, he was a Professor of Electrical Engineering at University of California Santa Cruz, from 1999 to 2014. He was Associate Dean for Research at the School of Engineering from 2010 to 2012. From 2012 to 2014 he was on leave at Google-x, where he helped develop the imaging pipeline for Google Glass. Most recently, his team at Google developed the digital zoom pipeline for the Pixel phones, which includes the multi-frame super-resolution "Super Res Zoom" technology, and the RAISR upscaling algorithm. In addition, the Night Sight mode on Pixel 3 uses the Super Res technology for vivid shots in all lighting conditions.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Shrikanth Narayanan</span> Researcher

Shrikanth Narayanan is an Indian-American Professor at the University of Southern California. He is an interdisciplinary engineer–scientist with a focus on human-centered signal processing and machine intelligence with speech and spoken language processing at its core. A prolific award-winning researcher, educator, and inventor, with hundreds of publications and a number of acclaimed patents to his credit, he has pioneered several research areas including in computational speech science, speech and human language technologies, audio, music and multimedia engineering, human sensing and imaging technologies, emotions research and affective computing, behavioral signal processing, and computational media intelligence. His technical contributions cover a range of applications including in defense, security, health, education, media, and the arts. His contributions continue to impact numerous domains including in human health, national defense/intelligence, and the media arts including in using technologies that facilitate awareness and support of diversity and inclusion. His award-winning patents have contributed to the proliferation of speech technologies on the cloud and on mobile devices and in enabling novel emotion-aware artificial intelligence technologies.

Vivek Shripad Borkar is an Indian electrical engineer, mathematician and an Institute chair professor at the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai. He is known for introducing analytical paradigm in stochastic optimal control processes and is an elected fellow of all the three major Indian science academies viz. the Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy and the National Academy of Sciences, India. He also holds elected fellowships of The World Academy of Sciences, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Indian National Academy of Engineering and the American Mathematical Society. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards for his contributions to Engineering Sciences in 1992. He received the TWAS Prize of the World Academy of Sciences in 2009.
