91.7 WCUC FM is an American fully operational, FCC-licensed, non-commercial educational, student-run radio station under the Department of Communication that is operated with the intention of being a student learning lab for Clarion University of Pennsylvania.
WCUC-FM is dedicated to connecting Clarion County and the surrounding areas through unique, high-quality music, performance and public affairs programming that informs, educates, entertains, and inspires listeners.
WCUC-FM is located at G55 Becker Hall, 840 Wood St., Clarion, Pennsylvania.
WCUC-FM has nine functional departments: Programming, Sports, News, Events, Promotions, Staff Development, Music, Production and Underwriting, and a station and assistant station manager.
WCUC was founded in September 1977 as Clarion University’s FM radio station. The newly formed station guaranteed a variety of entertainment and something for everyone. WCUC received its FCC licensing earlier in the year on April 26, 1977.
From 1977 through the decades until today, WCUC’s mission had been to serve the community and the college with an alternative sound in radio and bring them the best in news, sports and music.
WCUC’s first broadcast was on September 12, 1977 with a 1000-watt station giving it an audience radius of 40 miles. WCUC, at that time broadcast from 3 pm to 12 midnight, giving the Clarion area its very first late-night FM station.
WCUC celebrated its 30th Aaniversary in April 2007 during Clarion University’s media day down across from the Court House at Spring Fling.
WCUC’s board of directors consists of directors of each department and their assistants. It also includes the station manager, assistant station manager, and the advisors of the organization. Departments of WCUC are Program, Music, Production, Underwriting, Promotions, Events, Sports, News and Staff Development.
The station manager of WCUC-FM is responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations of the radio station. The duties and powers of the station manager are to preside over and conduct all station and executive board meetings, enforce the bylaws and maintain general order of the station, to maintain a relationship and meet individually with faculty and WCUC staff to discuss any issues or problems. The station manager is also granted a limited power to make command decisions, when a situations arise. Command decisions must be made with the utmost respect and responsibility for the station. S/he is responsible for being the liaison between Clarion University faculty and staff, including, but not limited to the Chief Operating Engineer, faculty advisor, and department chair.
Is responsible for the up keeping of the stations website and to assume the responsibilities of the stations manager in the station managers’ absence.
Programming is responsible for the overseeing the rules and regulations of on-air content. The program department creates and oversees the schedules for production, events, and programming, as well as the planning and upkeep of the program log. For live remotes, the program director will create a schedule for DJs in reference to call-ins. The Director also works with the DJ trainer and music director to ensure the compliance of all on-air DJs with the rules and regulations of the station.
Responsible for selection of new recordings to be played as they are submitted by record companies. As well, the music department is responsible for managing the station’s music library, and loading new music, programs, PSA’s, station imaging and promotional spots in the music system. It is under the responsibility of the music director to decide the format of songs received, as well as if the songs will be aired or not.
Production is responsible for assigning announcers for voice work, scheduling studio time, arranging recording sessions and producing underwriting spots and station imaging. Also assists with on-air DJs with creating promotional spots and is responsible for training any member of the station to use production equipment. Production is also responsible for maintaining the live-remote equipment, as well as the set-up, operation, and tear down of any live remote event.
Underwriting is responsible for obtaining the underwriting grants from local businesses and organizations, as well as clubs and departments of Clarion University. Works with production department and chief engineer to complete a script and promotional spot.
Promotes WCUC-FM and its content to the surrounding communities. Attains and distributes products for on-air giveaways, and distribute the monthly news letter.
Events is responsible for scheduling of any events or live-remotes. Works with entire station to schedule and set-up all events and live remotes, and to make sure that each event runs smoothly as possible.
Works with the athletic department of Clarion University to select sporting events for on-air coverage, including, assigning play-by-play and color commentary for each sporting event.
Responsible for finding news stories that are relevant to the interests of surrounding communities. Rewrites the news into broadcast format, so as not to violate the copyright of any news organization, as well as obtain interviews with people from the surrounding communities. The news department also attends Clarion Borough Council events and meetings.
Training of all on-air DJs, make sure DJs have learned all required material including FCC obscenity laws, working of station equipment, EBS and other DJ guideline which can be found in the 91.7 WCUC rules and regulations.

91.7 WCUC-FM broadcasts with a 3200-watt station, which has the capabilities of broadcasting 60 miles in any direction.
In August 2005 WCUC acquired an automation system manufactured by Scotts Studios Inc. now known as Wide Orbit Radio Automation Inc. The Scotts System allowed WCUC to go from broadcasting from 6 am to midnight to 24 hours. The Scotts system allows WCUC to have a computer to schedule songs, according to pre set schedules when DJs are not present.
WCUC has a state of the art hybrid transmitter, making WCUC capable of broadcasting in IBOC, digital and analog when desired (WCUC is currently only broadcasting in analog).
91.7 WCUC-FM is an authorized Emergency Broadcast System station, connected to issuing agencies via satellite, internet, and radio monitoring allowing WCUC to broadcast emergency alerts, emergency notifications, and Amber Alerts.
KXUA is a student-run college radio station broadcasting an eclectic radio format. Licensed to Fayetteville, Arkansas, it serves the university campus and surrounding community. The university also owns the more powerful 91.3 KUAF, which broadcasts news, information and classical music as an NPR member station.
WRSU-FM is a non-commercial college radio station serving the greater Central New Jersey area, broadcasting from the campus of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. It is a student and faculty-run radio station.
WUSC-FM is a student-run college radio station operating at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina.
KFJC is a volunteer-run non-commercial college radio station in Los Altos Hills, California, at Foothill College, using a variety radio format that features a broad spectrum of music styles and public affairs programming. KFJC's over-the-air broadcast is 24/7 and can be heard within the southern San Francisco Bay Area.
KCSB-FM is a non-commercial, educational radio station located on the UC Santa Barbara campus. KCSB is designed to be educational for both programmers and listeners. UCSB students and other programmers are provided an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of radio broadcasting, both technically and in terms of broadcast content, and to explore more advanced aspects of broadcasting and the audio medium. The station has a range that reaches as far south as Los Angeles County and as far north as San Luis Obispo, California.
WHUS is a non-commercial educational FM college radio station. It transmits with 4,400 watts on 91.7 MHz from the University of Connecticut (UConn) in Storrs to audiences in Connecticut, southern Massachusetts and western Rhode Island. WHUS operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year as a community radio station that features members of the student body and the local community.
WMUC-FM is the student-run non-commercial radio station licensed to the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland, broadcasting at 30 watts. It is a freeform radio station staffed entirely by volunteer UMD students and community members.
WNHU is a radio station broadcasting a variety format. Licensed to West Haven, Connecticut, United States, the station serves the New Haven area. The station is owned by the University of New Haven. The WNHU studios moved to its current home on Ruden Street into the Lois Evalyn Bergami Broadcast Media Center in the year 2015. Its location on Ruden Street includes a production space for live and recorded programming, a server room, staff offices and a student lounge. WNHU is managed by a 10-person student leadership team. Positions include Station Manager, Promotions Director, Aircheck Director, WNHU Program Director, Director of Fundraising, Program/Music Director and Productions Director.
WPSU is central Pennsylvania's only National Public Radio member radio station licensed to the Pennsylvania State University Board of Trustees as a part of WPSU Penn State. The over-the-air and digital signal reaches 13 counties in central and north central Pennsylvania. The station is rebroadcast on WPSX 90.1 FM in Kane. Both the 91.5 and 90.1 signals transmit in HD.
WRGP is the student-run radio station of Florida International University in Miami, Florida, United States. WRGP broadcasts on 88.1 MHz from a transmitter site in rural Miami-Dade County at 17107 SW 248 Street and from rebroadcasters on the two largest FIU campuses: W237CP (95.3 MHz) at the main Modesto A. Maidique Campus, where the station's studios are located in the Graham Center, and W245BF (96.9 MHz) on the Biscayne Bay Campus in North Miami.
WSUM is a student radio station in Madison, Wisconsin, affiliated with the University of Wisconsin–Madison. It plays a variety of music styles with talk programming serving the campus and wider Madison community. The studios and offices are at 333 East Campus Mall on the 4th floor. WMHB, 89.7 FM Waterville, is the non-commercial College radio station of Colby College in Waterville, Maine, United States. WMHB is directed, managed, and staffed entirely by students. WTJU is a variety-formatted broadcast radio station licensed to Charlottesville, Virginia, serving Charlottesville and Albemarle County, Virginia. WTJU is owned and operated by the University of Virginia.
WKPX is the non-commercial, educational radio station owned and operated by the Broward County Public Schools (BCPS), broadcasting at 3,000 watts and reaching all of Broward County. In mid-2020, production studios were relocated from Piper High School, where the station had operated for many years, to BECON's production facility in Davie. This move is a first step in a plan to create internship opportunities for students throughout BCPS to get training and practical experience in radio as well as television and video production.
WHQR is the National Public Radio (NPR) member station for Southeastern North Carolina, broadcasting on the FM band 91.3 MHz. Based in Wilmington and operated by Friends of Public Radio, Inc.. It airs NPR, American Public Media, PRX, and BBC programming as well as classical, jazz and adult album alternative music. WHQR hosts concerts, art receptions and events in their gallery space as well as live concerts from the Soup to Nuts Live program and monthly Classical concerts.
WJMF is an FM radio station in Smithfield, Rhode Island, owned by Bryant University. The station's primary channel is a classical music station simulcasting WCRB from Boston. It serves the Providence area. WJMF also operates an HD2 channel run by Bryant University students; from 1973 until 2011, this service was heard on its primary channel. The station has over 40 shows and more than 100 DJs. It plays a variety of music ranging from alternative to talk to Top 40. It is also known for hosting local political debates, interviews with athletes, and having talk radio shows. It also broadcasts games of the Bryant University Division I athletic teams.
WICB is a radio station licensed to serve Ithaca, New York, United States. Established in 1941 and receiving its FCC license in 1948, the station is owned by Ithaca College.
KWSB-FM is college radio station based at Western Colorado University in Gunnison. The station has been in continuous operation since January 1968 and recently celebrated its 40th anniversary with alumni and former staff. For a long period throughout the 1970s, it was the only station in the Gunnison area that played popular music, that is, played more than simply country music. This reputation for free and hip music gives it notoriety among students and locals. It has one of the largest vinyl collections in the state collegiate radio station system. Members have received multiple awards for excellent broadcasting from the Colorado Broadcasters Association over the years and is considered a major asset to the university. The station provides non-commercial service to Gunnison and relies on the communications budget and local underwriting to stay afloat. The staff is made up entirely of students and is advised by a professor in the communications department. The station is also known as "The Penguin" and phonetic "Quizbee" by students and staff. The station provides live DJing experience to any students that take the Communication and Theatre 261 course, and provides news to the community.
WMSV FM 91.1 is a radio station in Starkville, Mississippi located on the campus of Mississippi State University.
KTDT-LP is a low-power FM radio station on 99.1 FM in Tucson, Arizona. Known as “Downtown Radio”, the station is owned and operated by LPFM Downtown Tucson, a non-profit LLC. The station format is rock Monday through Saturday and other genres, including talk, on Sunday. The purpose of the station is to provide an alternative to corporate radio and DJs have the freedom to play songs that aren't typically heard on corporate radio. Both the station and LLC were founded by Jason LeValley, who served as the executive director from its launch date of September 13, 2015, to December 30, 2019. The station is currently operated by an unpaid staff of over 50 volunteers, under the guidance of an all-volunteer board of directors.
