FM broadcasting

FM broadcasting is a method of radio broadcasting using frequency modulation (FM) technology. Invented in 1933 by American engineer Edwin Armstrong, wide-band FM is used worldwide to provide high-fidelity sound over broadcast radio. FM broadcasting is capable of better sound quality than AM broadcasting, the chief competing radio broadcasting technology, so it is used for most music broadcasts. Theoretically wideband AM can offer equally good sound quality, provided the reception conditions are ideal. FM radio stations use the VHF frequencies. The term "FM band" describes the frequency band in a given country which is dedicated to FM broadcasting.

In American, Canadian and Philippine broadcasting, a city of license or community of license is the community that a radio station or television station is officially licensed to serve by that country's broadcast regulator.

Programming

WSMX-FM broadcasts a hybrid classic country/classic hits music format. [1] In addition to its usual music programming, WSMX-FM features news at the top of the hour, local community announcements on the half-hour, plus weather at the top and bottom of every hour. Notable programming includes a two-hour "Swap Shop" each weekday morning, two hours of Southern Gospel music on Family Gospel Time each weekday evening, plus a Sunday morning church service from First United Methodist of Luverne.

Classic country is a music radio format that specializes in playing mainstream country and western music hits from past decades.

Classic hits is a radio format which generally includes songs from the top 40 music charts from the mid-1970s to the early 1990s, with music from the 1980s serving as the core of the format. Music that was popularized by MTV in the early 1980s and the nostalgia behind it is a major driver to the format. It is considered the successor to the oldies format, a collection of top 40 songs from the late 1950s through the late 1970s that was once extremely popular in the United States. The term is sometimes incorrectly used as a synonym for the adult hits format, which uses a slightly newer music library stretching from all decades to the present with a major focus on 1990s and 2000s rock and alternative songs. In addition, adult hits stations tend to have larger playlists, playing a given song only a few times per week, compared to the tighter libraries on classic hits stations. For example, KRTH, a classic hits station in Los Angeles, plays power songs up to 30 times a week, which is another differentiator compared to other formats that share songs with classic hits libraries.

Tradio is the name given to a type of talk radio show format where listeners call in to buy or sell items. The concept is analogous to classified ads in local newspapers.

The year 1995 saw a number of significant events in radio broadcasting.

A broadcast license is a type of spectrum license granting the licensee permission to use a portion of the radio frequency spectrum in a given geographical area for broadcasting purposes. The licenses generally include restrictions, which vary from band to band.

The station changed its call sign from WAOQ to WSMX-FM on July 7, 2016.

On August 26, 2016, this station did a tweak with their format. (Taken from their Facebook Page) A new sound is coming from 100.3FM . We are now Supermix 100.3FM WSMX. We play "All the hits you grew up with". A mix of your favorite country oldies and your favorite pop and rock & roll oldies.

Construction permit

In December 2008, the station applied for a construction permit that would allow it to change its community of license from Brantley, Alabama to tiny Goshen, Alabama. [5] The application was contingent upon a simultaneous application to allow WEZZ to move from Monroeville, Alabama, to Brantley and take over the WAOQ broadcast tower. In mid September 2016, this station signed on from their new facility in Goshen, Alabama, for which the license to operate was issued on September 19, 2016. (Taken from Alabama Broadcast Media Page)
