The United Kingdom Championship Special was a professional wrestling streaming event produced by the American promotion WWE. The event was filmed on 7 May 2017 and aired on 19 May exclusively on the WWE Network. The event was held at Epic Studios in Norwich, Norfolk, England and featured the participation of competitors from WWE's United Kingdom division and the 205 Live programme.

Background

On 15 December 2016, at The O2 Arena, Triple H announced that the following month, WWE would crown its inaugural WWE United Kingdom Champion. [1] A tournament to crown the inaugural champion occurred as the United Kingdom Championship Tournament event, which took place over two days on 14 and 15 January 2017. The tournament and championship were won by Tyler Bate, who at the time became the youngest wrestler to hold a WWE singles championship at 19 years old. [2]

On 15 May 2017, a follow-up to the UK Championship tournament was announced by WWE, [3] titled the "United Kingdom Championship Special." Jim Ross and Nigel McGuinness were announced as the commentators for the event. [4] The event was filmed on 7 May and aired on tape delay on 19 May exclusively on the WWE Network. It was held at Epic Studios in Norwich, Norfolk, England and featured the participation of the competitors from WWE's United Kingdom division and the 205 Live programme. [5] [6] [3]

The first round took place on 14 January 2017, while the finals occurred on 15 January. The tournament was held at the Empress Ballroom in Blackpool, Lancashire, England and crowned the inaugural WWE United Kingdom Champion. Tyler Bate won the tournament to become the inaugural champion.

Joseph Conners is an English professional wrestler. Conners competed in many British wrestling promotions, most notably New Generation Wrestling (NGW) and What Culture Pro Wrestling (WCPW), where he was a one-time WCPW Champion. In 2017 and 2018 he took part in WWE's UK Championship Tournament, and until 2021 competed on WWE's NXT UK brand.

Benjamin Maurice Webb, better known by the ring name Trent Seven, is an English professional wrestler, wrestling promoter, and actor. He was signed to WWE on their NXT UK brand, where he is a former NXT UK Tag Team Champion. He and Tyler Bate formed the tag team Moustache Mountain, who also had won the Progress Tag Team Championship and the RPW Undisputed British Tag Team Championship in the UK, as well as the Chikara Campeonatos de Parejas in the United States. Seven, Bate, and Pete Dunne collectively form the team "British Strong Style". Seven has also competed as a singles competitor, being a one-time ICW World Heavyweight Champion.

British Strong Style was a professional wrestling stable made up of Pete Dunne, Trent Seven and Tyler Bate, best known for their tenure together in WWE. Dunne currently competes on the SmackDown brand and Bate competes on the NXT brand. Seven last worked for WWE in the NXT UK brand, before his release in August, 2022. Dunne and Seven formed the group in the Progress Wrestling (Progress) promotion in July 2016 as a tag team, before adding Bate, who had been Seven's tag team partner as part of Moustache Mountain since April 2015, in November 2016. The group dominated Progress over the following year with Dunne holding the Progress World Championship and Bate and Seven the Progress Tag Team Championship. Though primarily appearing in Progress, the stable has also worked for several other promotions in the United Kingdom, including Chikara, where they won the 2017 King of Trios tournament.

The NXT UK Tag Team Championship was a men's professional wrestling tag team championship that was created and promoted by the American promotion WWE. It was defended on the NXT UK brand division, a sister brand of WWE's developmental territory NXT based in the United Kingdom. Established on 18 June 2018, the inaugural championship team was James Drake and Zack Gibson. On 4 September 2022 at Worlds Collide, the title was unified into the NXT Tag Team Championship, officially retiring the title in the process, with the team of Brooks Jensen and Josh Briggs recognized as the final champions.

Moustache Mountain was a British professional wrestling tag team consisting of Trent Seven and Tyler Bate, Bate is currently signed to WWE where he performs on the NXT brand and Seven worked for WWE until his release in August 2022. They are one-time NXT UK Tag Team Champions and NXT Tag Team Champions. Created in 2015, they previously worked for other promotions, most notably Chikara and Progress Wrestling. They are also known as part of the three-men stable British Strong Style together with Pete Dunne, also in WWE.

Although the event has been held primarily for WWE's developmental territories, NXT and the former NXT UK, other brands have also been featured. The event was put on hiatus after the 2020 event but returned in 2022. The 2022 event was also the last event for NXT UK as it will be relaunched as NXT Europe in 2023.

David Minton is an English professional wrestler. He is most known for his time in WWE, where he performed on its NXT UK brand under the ring name "Bomber" Dave Mastiff.
