The 2017 United Kingdom Championship Tournament was a two-day professional wrestling streaming event and tournament promoted by the American promotion WWE. It aired exclusively on the WWE Network. The first round took place on 14 January 2017, while the finals occurred on 15 January. The tournament was held at the Empress Ballroom in Blackpool, Lancashire, England and crowned the inaugural WWE United Kingdom Champion. Tyler Bate won the tournament to become the inaugural champion.

Background

In a press conference at The O2 Arena on 15 December 2016, Triple H, an executive for the American professional wrestling promotion WWE and head of the promotion's NXT brand, revealed that there would be a 16-man tournament to crown the inaugural WWE United Kingdom Champion. [1] A United Kingdom Championship Tournament: Preview show aired on the WWE Network on 9 January 2017, with a behind-the-scenes look at the creators of the event and the 16 competitors. [2] The tournament was held over a two-day period, 14 and 15 January 2017, at the Empress Ballroom in Blackpool, Lancashire, England and aired exclusively on the WWE Network. [3] [4] The championship later became the top championship of the NXT UK brand and its show, NXT UK , a WWE Network show produced in the United Kingdom that premiered on 17 October 2018. [5]

Aftermath

On 15 May 2017, a follow-up to the United Kingdom Championship tournament was announced by WWE, [28] titled the United Kingdom Championship Special, the event aired on 19 May 2017. [29] In April 2018, a second WWE United Kingdom Championship Tournament was announced, to be held on 18 and 19 June 2018 at the Royal Albert Hall. [30]

In 2017 and 2018 he took part in WWE's UK Championship Tournament, and until 2021 competed on WWE's NXT UK brand.

Benjamin Maurice Webb, better known by the ring name Trent Seven, is an English professional wrestler, wrestling promoter, and actor. He was signed to WWE on their NXT UK brand, where he is a former NXT UK Tag Team Champion. He and Tyler Bate formed the tag team Moustache Mountain, who also had won the Progress Tag Team Championship and the RPW Undisputed British Tag Team Championship in the UK, as well as the Chikara Campeonatos de Parejas in the United States. Seven, Bate, and Pete Dunne collectively form the team "British Strong Style". Seven has also competed as a singles competitor, being a one-time ICW World Heavyweight Champion.

The event was filmed on 7 May 2017 and aired on 19 May exclusively on the WWE Network. The event was held at Epic Studios in Norwich, Norfolk, England and featured the participation of competitors from WWE's United Kingdom division and the 205 Live programme.

British Strong Style was a professional wrestling stable made up of Pete Dunne, Trent Seven and Tyler Bate, best known for their tenure together in WWE. Dunne currently competes on the SmackDown brand and Bate competes on the NXT brand. Seven last worked for WWE in the NXT UK brand, before his release in August, 2022. Dunne and Seven formed the group in the Progress Wrestling (Progress) promotion in July 2016 as a tag team, before adding Bate, who had been Seven's tag team partner as part of Moustache Mountain since April 2015, in November 2016. The group dominated Progress over the following year with Dunne holding the Progress World Championship and Bate and Seven the Progress Tag Team Championship. Though primarily appearing in Progress, the stable has also worked for several other promotions in the United Kingdom, including Chikara, where they won the 2017 King of Trios tournament.

NXT UK is a professional wrestling television programme that was produced exclusively in the United Kingdom by the American promotion WWE. It aired on BT Sport and 5Action. In the United States, the show was available to stream on Peacock, while in other countries, it aired on the WWE Network. The show featured competitors from WWE's NXT UK brand. The show was officially announced during the 2018 United Kingdom Championship Tournament. The final episode of the programme aired on 1 September 2022, following the announcement that the NXT UK brand would be replaced by NXT Europe in 2023.
