Wallowing are a metal band from Brighton, UK. The band formed in 2015, with their debut show being at the Cardiff Psych & Noise Festival 2018. They released their first album Planet Loss through Sludgelord Records and Black Voodoo Records in September 2019.

History

2015–2019: Formation and Planet Loss

Wallowing was formed in Brighton in 2015 by Tom Harrison, Rauiri Boyden, Zak Duffield, Mark Roberts and Jon Wingrove. [1] [2] [3] All members had played in other bands prior to its formation; Tom Harrison said that from the start the band was "intended to have an obscure and out-there sound". [1] It was originally intended to be a one-man studio project by Tom, but ended up becoming a full band, with Tom Harrison saying "the more I worked at the music the more it dawned on me that if I wanted this sound as big as possible I would have to have more people involved to really do it justice". [1]

The band's first album, Planet Loss was recorded by Wayne Adams at Bear Bites Horse studio [4] in London and was released through Sludgelord Records and Black Voodoo Records in 2019. A lot of the foundation and the concept of Planet Loss was already completed by Tom Harrison before other members joined, with some ideas for the project starting in 2015, and the rest of the band joining later. [5] [6]

A graphic novella depicting the story of the album was created by artist Luke Oram, and was sold individually as well as alongside the record. [7] [8] A short run of action figures based on the album and graphic novel was also produced. [5] Vice described Planet Loss as a "punishing slab of distortion and despair". [9]

Planet Loss was re-released on CD by Surviving Sounds and Trepanation Records, [10] and on tape in Asia via Gutless Productions. [11]

The band began performing in costume in 2018, and although originally this was intended to be a one off, it became a permanent fixture of the their performances. [5]

2020-2022: Four Way Split

Wallowing released a live single IV: Hail Creation (Live at S.O.A.N) with proceeds donated to the NHS during the COVID-19 Pandemic. [12] [5]

The band wrote and recorded two tracks for a split LP with 3 other bands: Slabdragger, Vixen Maw and Thin. It was released in 2021 by Sludgelord Records and Black Voodoo Records. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the band took a DIY recording approach and recorded these tracks without playing them together as a band. [13] [14]

In 2022, Vocalist Zak Duffield left the band and was replaced by Maxim Taite-Ellis. [15]

2023-2024: Earth Reaper, Church Road Records, Waterstones

Wallowing released their second album, Earth Reaper in April 2023, through Church Road Records. [16] Earth Reaper was recorded at No Studio by Joe Clayton. [17] Kerrang gave the album 4 out of 5, and described Wallowing as "a difficult band to get your head around". [18] Lambgoat described the album as "cataclysmic, every bit as ruinous as you would expect from the name". [19] Metal Hammer described it as a "space opera soundtrack scored by fans of prog, grind and doom metal". [20]

Wallowing's stage outfits have evolved to be more complete with hoods and body packs, [16] saying in reference to this "We're constantly striving to be bigger, better and more ridiculous". [20] Starting in 2023, Wallowing began doing interviews using only their initials to identify themselves. [21]

In 2023, Wallowing became the first metal band to play a show in a Waterstones bookshop, saying "It would be silly to turn down such a ridiculous offer." [22]

Wallowing performed at ArcTanGent Festival 2023, [23] and toured in support of Earth Reaper, including supporting bands such as Frozen Soul and Conan. [24] [25]

In May 2024, Wallowing released the single Restless Dusk I: The Anamnesis Hymn, which is a continuation of the comic book series of the same name by Luke Oram. [4] A remastered re-release of Planet Loss was released in August 2024, which features this single as a bonus track. [4]

"Am I Evil?" is a song by British heavy metal band Diamond Head. Released on the band's 1980 debut album Lightning to the Nations, it remains the band's signature song. The song was written by lead vocalist Sean Harris and guitarist Brian Tatler and released by Happy Face Records, a label owned by the producer Muff Murfin of The Old Smithy studio of Worcester, England.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Janet Gardner</span> American rock singer (born 1962)

Janet Patricia Gardner is an American rock singer. She is best known as the former lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the all-female glam metal band Vixen joining in 1983. She was the band's longest serving vocalist having performed on three of the band's four studio albums. When Vixen broke up in 1992 she took a hiatus from singing to pursue personal endeavors. She briefly unofficially reformed Vixen in 1997 with drummer Roxy Petrucci. She returned to Vixen in 2001, later studying to become a dental hygienist. In 2004 she took part in a Vixen reunion for a one-night-only gig as part of VH1's Bands Reunited TV show. She returned to Vixen full-time in 2012.

Trapped Under Ice is an American hardcore punk band from Baltimore, Maryland that was formed in 2007. Since then they have released an EP and three full-length albums. Taking influence from New York hardcore, the band has toured all over the world and was signed to Reaper Records. On August 11, 2013, Trapped Under Ice played its last show at Philadelphia's The Electric Factory at This Is Hardcore Festival 2013. The band announced their reunion in early 2015. In 2017 they released their third LP, Heatwave, on Pop Wig Records.

Enterprise Earth is an American deathcore band from Spokane, Washington. The band was formed in mid-2014 by former members Dan Watson and BJ Sampson on vocals and guitars respectively. At the beginning of the spring, the band finalised their deal with Attila frontman, Chris Fronzak, and moved to his record label Stay Sick Recordings, leaving former label We Are Triumphant. Since the departure of Watson in 2022, no original members remain in the band, with guitarist Gabe Mangold being its longest tenured member since joining in 2017.

The album sees the band using a heavy metal and thrash metal style, which they had only briefly touched upon on previous albums. Its lyrics address environmental themes such as climate change and ecological disaster through a cli-fi narrative involving space colonisation.
