Invisible Oranges is an American online music magazine dedicated to heavy metal news, band interviews and album reviews. It was founded by Cosmo Lee in September 2006 shortly after emigrating from San Francisco, California, United States to Berlin, Germany. [1] [2]
Invisible Oranges was acquired by American news company BrooklynVegan in January 2013, shifting its headquarters to Brooklyn, New York. [3] In July 2015, BrooklynVegan and its subsidiaries became affiliates of American mass media conglomerate Townsquare Media. [4] [5] In January 2021, BrooklynVegan and Invisible Oranges were bought out by American digital media brand and e-commerce company Project M Group. [6] [7]
Cosmo Lee started Invisible Oranges in September 2006 as a repository for his articles published by other magazines, such as PopMatters , Decibel , Stylus Magazine , and Metal Injection. [2] [8] Lee had recently moved from San Francisco, California to Berlin, Germany and published all of the articles in English. [2] The website's first article was a scathing review of Voodoocult's debut Jesus Killing Machine , published on October 6, 2006. [9] [10]
On September 24, 2011, after five years of running the blog, Lee stepped down as editor-in-chief of Invisible Oranges, but retained ownership of the domain. [11] [12] The announcement was made six months earlier, on March 21, 2011, at which time Lee invited new writers to apply as editors and contributors. [13] [14] On August 26, 2011, Lee posted a second and final recruitment offer for editors, text editors, art directors, gatekeepers, calendar managers and writers. [15] [16] It was at this time that Vanessa Salvia joined as text editor, Haku Chamberlin-Bee joined as a designer and others joined the team in positions offered by Lee. [17] Lee has since gone on to become associate director of direct response at the Children's Hospital Los Angeles.
Michael Nelson replaced Lee as editor-in-chief in September 2011 and remained in that position for the next nine months. Aaron Lariviere replaced Nelson as editor-in-chief in May 2012 but only lasted a brief eight months. Nelson and Lariviere were both contributing writers at Stereogum during their time at Invisible Oranges. [18]
In December 2012, Lariviere announced his departure from Invisible Oranges, leading Lee to consider shutting down the website. Instead, BrooklynVegan writer Fred Pessaro offered to take the editor-in-chief position at Invisible Oranges. On January 4, 2013, Invisible Oranges officially joined the BrooklynVegan family as its fourth blog, behind BrooklynVegan, BV Chicago and BV Austin. [3] [19] Invisible Oranges' domain name was immediately transferred from Lee to BrooklynVegan's owner and founder David Levine.
Pessaro left Invisible Oranges after only nine months as editor-in-chief, in September 2013. He has since gone on to write for Noisey and Revolver. [20] [21] Doug Moore (vocalist in death metal band Pyrrhon) replaced Pessaro in September 2013 as editor-in-chief. [22] [23] Moore restructured the executive department, promoting Salvia to assistant editor, Wyatt Marshall to deputy editor and adding Kelly Kettering as director of promotions. [23] [24] Moore, however, only remained editor-in-chief for eight months, and like many of his former editors-in-chief, has gone on to write for Stereogum . [25]
Ian Chainey replaced Moore as editor-in-chief in April 2014 for another short eight months. [26] Joseph Schafer replaced Chainey as editor-in-chief in November 2014 and honored that position for two years and eight months; the longest time an editor-in-chief remained in that position since Lee. [27] [28] Wyatt Marshall left the deputy editor position in August 2014 but the role was not taken over by anyone else; Marshall also went on to write for Stereogum. [29] [30]
In July 2015, BrooklynVegan and its three subsidiaries (Invisible Oranges, BV Chicago and BV Austin) became affiliates of American mass media conglomerate Townsquare Media, under its division Townsquare Music. [31] [32] [33] At the time, Townsquare Music also owned such webzines as Consequence of Sound, Hype Machine , Ultimate Classic Rock , Loudwire, Gorilla vs. Bear and Noisecreep . [31]
Salvia and Kettering both left Invisible Oranges in February 2017, at the same time as Ian Cory and Jon Rosenthal became executives. [17] [34] [35] Cory acted as co-editor-in-chief, simultaneously with Schafer, until the latter's departure in July 2017; while Rosenthal was promoted to associate editor. [36] Schafer went on to write for Decibel , Noisey , Bandcamp's Bandcamp Daily column, as well as co-host The Human Instrumentality podcast with Cory. [28] [37]
Andrew Rothmund became copy editor in July 2017; he was later promoted to editor-in-chief in January 2019 when Cory departed after one year and eleven months in the position. [36] [38] Rothmund has since become the third longest-running editor-in-chief of Invisible Oranges, behind Lee and Schafer, holding the position for two years and three months, until his departure in March 2021. [39] Rosenthal, who had been promoted to senior editor in February 2020, became editor-in-chief in March 2021, and writer Ted Nubel was promoted to editor. [40] [41] [42]
In January 2021, BrooklynVegan and Invisible Oranges were bought out by American digital media brand and e-commerce company Project M Group (which had previously bought out other magazines like Revolver, The Hard Times , Metal Edge , Inked and Goldmine). [43] [44] Project M Group founder Enrique Abeyta became the owner of Invisible Oranges but BrooklynVegan's founder David Levine stayed on as general manager. As part of the new partnership, BrooklynVegan and Invisible Oranges launched a new webstore selling vinyl records, band shirts and apparel, as well as toys and collectibles. [45] The stores are identical across BrooklynVegan, Invisible Oranges, Revolver, The Hard Times, Metal Edge, Inked and Goldmine, with content controlled and curated by Project M Group. [45] [46] [47]

The company started in radio and expanded into digital media toward the end of the 2000s, starting with the acquisition of the MOG Music Network. As of 2019, Townsquare was the third-largest AM–FM operator in the country, owning over 321 radio stations in 67 markets.

Tommy Giles Rogers is an American musician, most notable for being the lead vocalist, keyboardist and lyricist of the progressive metal band Between the Buried and Me, which he co-founded in 2000. His vocal style combines death growls and screams with peaceful clean singing melodies, sometimes including falsetto. In 2005, Stylus Magazine named Rogers one of the three most versatile rock singers at the time.
Jupiter is the second full-length album by the alternative/metal band Cave In, released in summer 2000. It marked a change in the band's style, as this album saw the band move away from their previous hardcore sound by starting to experiment with more elements of space rock and psychedelic rock, with "Big Riff" being the only song on the album to contain screamed vocals.
Nachtmystium was an American psychedelic black metal band formed by Blake Judd, formerly known as Azentrius, and Pat McCormick. The band's name is derived from the German word Nacht meaning "night", and the made-up term mystium which resembles the Latin adjective mysticum. Judd and McCormick combined the words to create the band's name, which they state means "Encompassing Darkness". Nachtmystium released multiple critically praised albums between 2005 and 2012, including Instinct: Decay (2005), Assassins: Black Meddle, Part I (2008), and Silencing Machine (2012).

Saint Vitus is a bar and music venue located in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. Opened in April 2011, the 2,500 square feet (230 m2) venue is known for its heavy metal atmosphere. Some notable metal bands that have played there include Pentagram and Black Anvil. In April 2014, the surviving members of Nirvana performed at Saint Vitus with Joan Jett and Kim Gordon. Pitchfork writer Brandon Stosuy has also booked bands at the venue, such as Converge, Iceage, and Deafheaven.
BrooklynVegan is an American online music magazine founded in 2004 by David Levine. The company is headquartered in Brooklyn, New York, and originally focused on vegan food and the music community in and around New York City, before broadening its scope to covering musical artists and events worldwide. Since 2011, BrooklynVegan operates two subsidiaries dedicated to other cites: BV Chicago, which serves Chicago, Illinois; and BV Austin, which serves Austin, Texas.

Full of Hell is an American grindcore band from Ocean City, Maryland, and Central Pennsylvania, formed in 2009. They are currently signed to Relapse Records and have released five studio albums – Roots of Earth Are Consuming My Home (2011), Rudiments of Mutilation (2013), Trumpeting Ecstasy (2017), Weeping Choir (2019), and Garden of Burning Apparitions (2021) – as well as several EPs and splits. In addition to studio albums, they've released four collaboration albums – Full of Hell & Merzbow (2014) with Japanese noise artist Merzbow, One Day You Will Ache Like I Ache (2016) and Ascending a Mountain of Heavy Light (2017) with sludge metal band The Body, and Suffocating Hallucination with doom metal band Primitive Man in March 2023. A fifth, When No Birds Sang with shoegaze band Nothing, is scheduled to be released in December the same year.
Svalbard are a British metal band from Bristol, England. Formed in 2011 by co-lead vocalists and guitarists Serena Cherry and Liam Phelan with drummer Mark Lilley, the band's line-up has featured bassist Matt Francis since 2021. Primarily exhibiting a post-hardcore and post-metal sound, the band's style features elements of black metal, crust punk, post-rock and shoegaze.
Panopticon is an American black metal band founded by Austin Lunn in Louisville, Kentucky in 2007. Their most recent album ...And Again Into the Light was released in 2021. The band's music has been described as "wrenching in its intensity but also sweeping and spectacular" and "ideologically open-minded and musically progressive, tackling issues around self-identity, ecology, religion and politics." Lunn's lyrical style has also been noted as "natural, organic, and methodical, masterful in its writing, fiery and alive in its execution."
Power Trip is an American crossover thrash band formed in Dallas, Texas, in 2008. By 2020, Power Trip's lineup consisted of Riley Gale, Blake Ibanez, Nick Stewart, Chris Whetzel (bass) and Chris Ulsh (drums); the latter replaced drummer Marcus Johnson, who left in 2009. They have released two studio albums to date, Manifest Decimation (2013) and Nightmare Logic (2017), plus a compilation including their early tracks and a live album.
Burnt Sugar is the second studio album by the American rock band Gouge Away. The album was released on September 28, 2018 through Deathwish Inc. Burnt Sugar was co-produced by Jeremy Bolm of Touché Amoré and Jack Shirley, and was recorded live to 2" analog recording tape at Shirley's Atomic Garden studio in April 2018. Gouge Away promoted the album with music videos for the tracks "Only Friend", "Ghost" and "Hey Mercy".
SeeYouSpaceCowboy is an American hardcore punk band formed in San Diego, California, in 2016. It was founded by vocalist Connie Sgarbossa, Ethan Sgarbossa and Taylor Allen. Their name is taken from a phrase shown on many of the end title cards of the 1998 anime Cowboy Bebop.
When I Die, Will I Get Better? is the third studio album by British post-hardcore band Svalbard, released on 25 September 2020. Recorded in February 2020 with long-time producer Lewis Johns, the album incorporates more of a shoegaze-influenced sound in contrast to Svalbard's previous album It's Hard to Have Hope (2018), as well as more clean singing, vocal harmonies, and complex instrumental parts. Lyrically, it discusses themes of mental health, with a focus on depression and suicide, as well as feministic topics including domestic abuse, online sexism and objectification. It was Svalbard's only album with bassist Alex Heffernan.
Blood from the Soul is an industrial metal supergroup formed by Napalm Death bassist Shane Embury. The band's debut album, To Spite the Gland That Breeds (1993), featured Embury with Sick of It All vocalist Lou Koller. In 2020, Embury reformed the band with a new line-up, featuring vocalist Jacob Bannon, drummer Dirk Verbeuren and bassist Jesper Liveröd. The band's sophomore record, DSM-5, was released in the same year.
Black Radical Love is the 2023 full-length studio album debut by American hardcore punk band Move. It has received positive reviews from critics.
