Church Road Records is a British independent record label, founded in 2017. It is co-run by Sammy Urwin and Justine Jones, both of Employed to Serve. Originally founded as a mail-order distribution label, it was established as a proper record label in September 2020.
Church Road Records was originally founded in 2017 by Employed to Serve guitarist and vocalist Sammy Urwin. [2] [3] Taking its name from a street in Employed to Serve's hometown of Woking, [4] the label was originally set up as a mail-order distributor, which Urwin used to sell "a carefully curated selection of records he liked personally, ranging from classic hardcore and death metal long-players through to fellow contemporary cutting-edge acts". [4]
On 7 September 2020, several women accused Alex Fitzpatrick, the founder of Holy Roar Records (whom Employed to Serve had been signed to previously), of rape and sexual misconduct, which Fitzpatrick has denied. [5] This resulted in all of Holy Roar's staff and bands immediately severing ties with the label. [6] [7] [8] Within a few days of its closure, Urwin and Justine Jones (also of Employed to Serve, and a former manager at Holy Roar) converted Church Road Records into a proper record label in order to release several albums that were imminently due for released through Holy Roar, [3] including Svalbard's When I Die, Will I Get Better? , Palm Reader's Sleepless and Respire's Black Line. [9] [10] [11] As the record sleeves for these albums had already been printed, Jones ordered 3,000 stickers featuring a logo for Church Road Records that she and Urwin (with the assistance of Urwin's mum and sister as well as Svalbard members Serena Cherry and Liam Phelan) used to cover up the Holy Roar logo. [4] [8] Church Road also acquired the digital rights to the albums via TuneCore. [4] When I Die, Will I Get Better?, Sleepless and Black Line all proved to be critical and commercial successes for the label, with the albums ending up on several critics' end-of-year lists and receiving multiple pressings months after they were first released. [3] [4] By September 2021, Church Road Records had a roster of 20 bands. [1]
On 6 August 2022, Church Road Records celebrated its 5th birthday with a showcase at The Black Heart in London, with performances from Candescent A.D., Burner, Graywave, Noctule and Tuskar. [12] [13]
In a 2021 interview with Kerrang! , Jones said that she and Urwin set up Church Road Records "because we feel there’s a huge gap in the UK scene for labels like ours – labels that help grassroots bands rise so they can play academy-sized venues. A lot of the bigger labels aren’t really interested in small club bands because of the time and money that has to go into them. Our size of label is perfect for that." [4] The label's mail order service was initially run from a bedroom in Jones' and Urwin's house, but was later outsourced to Awesome Merch "because we had boxes everywhere and it was basically a fire hazard", Jones said. Church Road also runs a monthly subscription club for their releases (in both digital and physical formats), an idea that Jones previously established whilst working for Holy Roar. [4] Jones said that the subscription club allowed her to not worry as much about the sales of Church Road's artists, and felt that it also gave unknown artists free publicity. [4]

Enter Shikari are a British rock band formed in St Albans in 1999 by bassist Chris Batten, lead vocalist and keyboardist Rou Reynolds, and drummer Rob Rolfe. In 2003, guitarist Rory Clewlow joined the band to complete its current line-up, and it adopted its current name. In 2006, they performed to a growing fanbase at Download Festival as well as a sold-out concert at the London Astoria. Their debut studio album, Take to the Skies, was released in 2007 and reached number 4 in the Official UK Album Chart, and has since been certified gold in the UK. Their second, Common Dreads, was released in 2009 and debuted on the UK Albums Chart at number 16; while their third, A Flash Flood of Colour, was released in 2012 and debuted on the chart at number 4. Both have since been certified silver in the UK. The band spent a considerable amount of time supporting the latter release through the A Flash Flood of Colour World Tour, before beginning work on a fourth studio album, The Mindsweep, which was released in 2015. Their fifth studio album The Spark was released in 2017. Their sixth album Nothing Is True & Everything Is Possible was released in April 2020. Their seventh and latest album, A Kiss for the Whole World, was released on 21 April 2023 which gave them their first-ever No. 1 album.
Car Bomb is an American mathcore band from Rockville Centre, New York that was initially formed in 2000. Their debut album, Centralia, was released through Relapse Records on February 6, 2007.
Rolo Tomassi are a British mathcore band formed in Sheffield in 2005. Their name is a reference to dialogue from the film L.A. Confidential. The band are known for their chaotic style and performances, and strong DIY ethic. They are currently signed to MNRK Heavy.
Holy Roar Records was an independent record label run by Alex Fitzpatrick. The label began in January 2006 and put out its first release, the Phoenix Bodies album, Raise the Bullshit Flag in June 2006. Fitzpatrick originally joked that the name was derived from a vision he had while using the hallucinogen LSD. According to Fitzpatrick, the name “Holy Roar” was derived from a Torche song with the same title.
The Roadburn Festival is an annual music festival held each April in Tilburg, Netherlands. It was founded by Walter Hoeijmakers and Jurgen van den Brand in 1999, who ran a stoner rock blog of the same name.
Oliver Scott Sykes is a British singer and songwriter, best known as the lead vocalist and primary lyricist of the rock band Bring Me the Horizon. He also founded the apparel company Drop Dead Clothing, and created a graphic novel.
Baby Chaos are a Scottish rock band based in Glasgow, Scotland, who originally formed in Ayrshire in 1993, then returned in 2015 after a long hiatus. The band consists of Chris Gordon on lead vocals and guitar, Grant McFarlane on guitar and backing vocals, Alan Easton on guitar, Bobby Dunn on bass and Davy Greenwood on drums.

Formed in 2011 by co-lead vocalists and guitarists Serena Cherry and Liam Phelan with drummer Mark Lilley, the band's line-up has featured bassist Matt Francis since 2020. Primarily exhibiting a post-hardcore and post-metal sound, the band's style features elements of black metal, crust punk, post-rock and shoegaze.

When I Die, Will I Get Better? is the third studio album by British post-hardcore band Svalbard, released on 25 September 2020. Recorded in February 2020 with long-time producer Lewis Johns, the album incorporates more of a shoegaze-influenced sound in contrast to Svalbard's previous album It's Hard to Have Hope (2018), as well as more clean singing, vocal harmonies, and complex instrumental parts. Lyrically, it discusses themes of mental health, with a focus on depression, alongside feministic topics including domestic abuse, online sexism and objectification. It was Svalbard's only album with bassist Alex Heffernan.

Developing from the sound of its predecessor When I Die, Will I Get Better? (2020), the album saw the band experiment with its sound, production, and instrumentation. Lyrically, it eschews the social and political themes of its previous albums, with a focus on mental health, anxiety, depression and love.

It's Hard to Have Hope is the second studio album by British post-hardcore band Svalbard, released on 25 May 2018 by Holy Roar Records. The album was recorded in September 2017 at The Ranch Production House in Southampton with producer Lewis Johns. Primarily displaying a post-hardcore and post-metal sound, it expands on the heaviness and melodic tendencies of their debut album One Day All This Will End (2015). Its lyrics address various social and political topics including unpaid internships, revenge porn, feminism, abortion, animal welfare, sexual assault and long-term illness. It was Svalbard's only album with bassist Adam Parrish.
Profound Morality is the third extended play by British metalcore band Heriot, released on 29 April 2022 through Church Road Records. It is the band's first release as a quartet, featuring guitarist and vocalist Debbie Gough, who joined in 2019. The band wrote and recorded the bulk of the EP in five days at their rehearsal space in Bristol in April 2021. Whilst primarily categorized as a metalcore release, Profound Morality's sound combines elements from a variety of genres, including extreme metal, hardcore, industrial and noise music. Its lyrics, inspired by the "rhetoric of wealth and class" during the COVID-19 pandemic, focus on accountability, blame, integrity, questioning power, and identifying your morals.

Noctule is a British musical project founded by Serena Cherry, best known as the lead guitarist and co-lead vocalist of Svalbard, in 2020. Launched as a personal creative outlet amidst the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, Cherry considered the project to be a return to her roots as a black metal solo artist, prior to forming Svalbard in 2011, with its video game-inspired lyrics contrasting with the aforementioned band's heavy subject matters.
Underdark are a British black metal band from Nottingham, England, formed in 2015 by guitarists Ollie Jones and Adam Kinson and drummer Dan Hallam. Their current lineup consists of Jones, Kinson, bassist Stephen Waterfield, vocalist Abi Vasquez and drummer Dan Blackmore. The band's sound has been categorized under the "post-black metal" label and incorporates elements of blackgaze, screamo, and post-hardcore. Its members' anti-fascist beliefs, held since the band's inception, have led to Underdark being associated with the "anti-fascist black metal" and Red and Anarchist Black Metal (RABM) movements, although they do not consider themselves to be a political band.
Zetra are a British synth-rock duo from London. Formed in 2018, the band released several independent EPs and cassettes via Bandcamp before signing to Nuclear Blast Records in 2023. The band's eponymous debut album, Zetra, was released on 13 September 2024.
The British post-hardcore band Svalbard have released four studio albums, one compilation album, six extended plays, eleven singles and thirteen music videos. The band were formed in Bristol in 2011 by co-lead vocalists and guitarists Serena Cherry and Liam Phelan with drummer Mark Lilley, and went through numerous bassists before settling on Matt Francis in 2020. Svalbard self-released their eponymous debut extended play in May 2012, followed by the Gone Tomorrow EP in February 2013. Their third extended play, Flightless Birds, was released in October of that year through Tangled Talk Records. Svalbard developed a relationship with fellow post-hardcore band Pariso after touring together in 2013, leading to the release of a split EP in 2014 and their signing to Holy Roar Records, owned by Pariso guitarist Alex Fitzpatrick, in January 2015. The following month, Holy Roar released Discography 2012–2014, compiling all of the band's recorded output up to that point.
