Waste Warriors is a non-governmental organisation which undertakes waste collection, waste management consultancy, event waste management, and other related projects in Dehradun, Dharamshala, Corbett National Park, Goa, Himachal Pradesh and other parts of India. It was founded by Jodie Underhill and Taashi Pareek. [1] [2]

Work

Waste Warriors has done extensive work in the area of waste collection and waste management. Since they were registered in 2012, Waste Warriors has collected and processed over 4223 tonnes of waste from Bhagsunag and Triund. [3] Due to the efforts of Waste Warriors, Triund is now known as one of the cleanest hiking destinations in India. [4] In the year 2015-16, Waste Warriors collected 175,656 kg of waste from Corbett, 190,908 kg from Dehradun and 272,928 kg from Dharamsala. [5] [4] Waste Warriors were in waste management duty for three Airtel Hyderabad Marathons, [6] two Wipro Chennai Marathons, and IPL matches conducted in Dharamsala and Mohali Cricket Stadium. [7] They help in the waste management at Sunburn Music Festival. [8]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Waste management in India</span>

Waste management in India falls under the purview of the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEF&CC). In 2016, this ministry released the Solid Wastage Management (SWM) Rules, which replaced by the Municipal Solid Waste Rules, and 2000 of which had been in place for 16 years. This national policy plays a significant role in the acknowledgement and inclusion of the informal sector into the waste management process for the first time.

Peepal Farm is a not for profit, non-governmental organisation located in Dhanotu village, nearby Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh, India. The group works for the improvement of life conditions of the stray animal population, especially cows and dogs, and raising public awareness against animal cruelty.

Jodie Underhill is the co-founder of Waste Warriors, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) headquartered in Dehradun, India, that specialises in waste collection and waste management. Her work has led the Indian media to give her the nicknames 'Garbage Girl' and 'Waste Warrior'. She is a British expatriate, and her work in India has brought her recognition in various forms such as the 'Brand Icon Award' by The Times of India and the 'Green Hero Award' by Center of Media Studies.

Afroz Shah is an Indian environmental activist and lawyer from Mumbai. He is best known for organizing the world's largest beach clean-up project, which has grown into a movement that has inspired people around the world to clean up their surrounding environment.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Annadale, Shimla</span> Locality in Himachal Pradesh, India

Annadale, also spelled as Annandale is a locality of Shimla city, in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It is a flat valley bottom which includes the helipad as well as a golf course in the city. Annadale has also an army cantonment with an Army Heritage Museum. Due to its lush green environment, historical importance and first seen place by every VVIP visit, it is also known as the "Heart of Shimla".

Dharamshala Municipal Corporation (SMC) is the municipal corporation of Dharamshala District Kangra in Himachal Pradesh, and is the chief nodal agency for the administration of the city. Municipal Corporation mechanism in India was introduced during British Rule with formation of municipal corporation in Madras (Chennai) in 1688, later followed by municipal corporations in Bombay (Mumbai) and Calcutta (Kolkata) by 1762. Dharamshala Municipal Corporation is headed by Mayor of city and governed by Commissioner. Dharamshala Municipal Corporation has been formed with functions to improve the infrastructure of town.
